Packing List for Pelling, India: What Women Should Bring

Breathtaking view of the snow-capped Himalayas from Pelling, India in monochrome.

Pelling is a small town in West Sikkim at about 2,150 metres, and it exists for one reason: on a clear morning KANCHENJUNGA, THE THIRD HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN THE WORLD at 8,586 metres, fills the sky to the north west and seems improbably close. Sikkimese Buddhists regard it as a guardian deity and climbing it is not permitted from this side.

What Is Here

THE MOUNTAIN IS THE WHOLE POINT AND IT IS A MORNING EVENT. Kanchenjunga is usually clear at dawn and gone into cloud by mid morning, which means the view you came for happens between about five and eight. Hotels here are built and priced around which rooms face it.

PEMAYANGTSE IS ONE OF THE OLDEST MONASTERIES IN SIKKIM, founded in 1705, Nyingma order, and its top floor holds the Zangdok Palri, a seven-tiered wooden model of Guru Rinpoche's heavenly palace built by a single monk over five years. It is extraordinary and almost unknown.

Majestic Maitreya Buddha statue under a clear blue sky in Pelling, Sikkim.

The Maitreya Buddha is the second image, part of the Skywalk complex at Sanga Choeling, and it stands above the valley at the end of a glass-floored cantilever.

THE PELLING SKYWALK IS A GLASS BRIDGE leading to that statue, the first of its kind in India, and it is either a thrill or a reason to stay on solid ground depending on temperament.

RABDENTSE IS THE RUINED SECOND CAPITAL OF SIKKIM, a short walk through forest from Pemayangtse, with the remains of the royal complex on a ridge and the mountain behind it. It is quiet, uncommercialised and the best thing here after the view.

Khecheopalri Lake is a sacred lake about 25km away where, by tradition, birds remove any leaf that falls on the surface, and Kanchenjunga Falls and the Singshore Bridge, one of the highest in Asia, are the other excursions.

When to Go

October and November are the best months by a wide margin, with the clearest air and the most reliable mountain views. March to May is pleasant and hazier, with rhododendrons flowering.

AVOID THE MONSOON, JUNE TO SEPTEMBER. Sikkim gets very heavy rain, the mountain is invisible for weeks, and LANDSLIDES CLOSE THE ROADS from Siliguri, sometimes for days. This is the single most important planning fact for the state.

December to February is cold, clear and very quiet, with occasional snow and excellent views.

You may see nothing. Plan two or three nights rather than one, because a single clouded morning is the difference between the trip you wanted and a hotel room on a hill.

Getting There

By air to Bagdogra, about 140km and five hours by road, or Pakyong near Gangtok.

By train to New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri, then four to five hours by shared jeep or taxi.

By road from Gangtok, about four to five hours.

FOREIGN NATIONALS NEED AN INNER LINE PERMIT FOR SIKKIM. It is free and straightforward, issued at Rangpo on the way in, at Bagdogra airport or in advance, but it is required and it is checked. Indian nationals do not need one for Pelling. Some areas further north need additional permits.

Is Pelling Safe for Women?

Sikkim is widely regarded as one of the safest and most orderly states in India, and Pelling is a small tourist town within it. The FCDO does publish advised-against areas for India, and being precise about them matters more than a general warning. It advises against all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, except air travel to and movement within the city of Jammu, and against all travel within 10km of the India-Pakistan border, where the Wagah-Attari crossing is closed. It advises against all but essential travel to the state of Manipur, including Imphal. None of that is anywhere near this destination, and it is worth knowing which parts of a very large country the warnings actually describe.

North-east India carries conditions rather than a prohibition, and they are about movement rather than crime. The FCDO records that sudden flareups and skirmishes happen along inter-state borders including the Assam-Meghalaya boundary, that there have been skirmishes on the India-Bangladesh border, and that protests, blockades and large gatherings are common across the region, can begin without warning, and disrupt traffic on the national highways that connect these states to each other and to Assam. Check with local authorities before travelling in the region, avoid any crowd that forms, and build slack into a schedule that depends on one road. Note separately that the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to MANIPUR because of ethnic violence since May 2023.

THE ROAD IS THE REAL RISK AND IT IS A LONG ONE. Four to five hours of narrow mountain highway from Siliguri, frequently damaged, shared with jeeps and trucks, and landslide-prone in the monsoon. Travel in daylight, use a shared jeep or a hotel-arranged car rather than the cheapest option, and say something if the speed is wrong.

The altitude is mild at 2,150 metres but the excursions go higher and the mornings are cold.

Sikkim is a plastic-conscious state with bans on single-use plastic and on bottled water in some areas, so a refillable bottle is practical rather than pious.

The Skywalk's glass floor and the ridge paths at Rabdentse are exposed, and the paths are slippery after rain.

The Pelling Packing List

A cold ridge at dawn, mild by noon, and unheated rooms.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the garment the Pelling day is built around, because that day starts standing on a balcony at five in the morning at near freezing waiting for a mountain, and finishes at 18C in the sun. Wool covers both and is what you sleep in, since the rooms are not heated. A heavyweight merino base layer from October to March.

A Columbia Powder Lite insulated hooded jacket for the dawn vigil, and a Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket, since Sikkimese weather turns without notice.

Merrell Moab 3 waterproof hiking boots with Darn Tough merino socks: the Rabdentse path is forest mud and stone and the monastery courtyards are wet.

A RAYMYLO insulated water bottle, which Sikkim's plastic rules make genuinely necessary rather than virtuous.

Not linked and worth packing: A WARM HAT AND GLOVES for the dawn, which is the most commonly underpacked item here; BINOCULARS for the mountain; A SCARF for the monasteries, where shoes also come off; A HEAD TORCH, since power cuts are routine; PASSPORT PHOTOCOPIES AND PHOTOGRAPHS for the Inner Line Permit; and CASH, as ATMs are limited in West Sikkim.

Essential Resources for Women in Pelling

Emergency numbers: 112 is the single national emergency number and works from any phone. 100 reaches police directly, 108 ambulance and 101 fire. 1091 is the national women's helpline and 1098 the child helpline.

Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Sikkim. It is free and straightforward, issued at Rangpo on the way in, at Bagdogra airport or in advance, and it is checked: carry passport photocopies and photographs. Indian nationals do not need one for Pelling, and some areas further north require additional permits. KANCHENJUNGA IS A DAWN EVENT, usually clear between five and eight and gone into cloud by mid morning, so plan two or three nights rather than one. THE ROAD FROM SILIGURI is four to five hours of narrow mountain highway, landslide-prone in the monsoon, and is the real risk of the trip: travel in daylight. SIKKIM RESTRICTS SINGLE-USE PLASTIC and bottled water in places, so bring a refillable bottle. The monsoon, June to September, closes roads and hides the mountain for weeks.

US State Department travel advisory: the India advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/india, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

Main hospital: there is a district hospital at Gyalshing, about 10km away, with the referral hospitals at Gangtok four to five hours off and Siliguri about the same. Dial 108 for an ambulance and expect distance to be the constraint. Insurance covering road evacuation is sensible. Healthcare in the large Indian cities is genuinely good in the private hospitals and variable in the public ones, and the private sector expects payment or a direct insurance guarantee up front. Carry insurance with a high medical limit and repatriation cover, and carry proof of it. The commonest problem by far is not dramatic: it is stomach upset, so drink sealed bottled or filtered water, and be more careful with raw salad and cut fruit than with hot food cooked in front of you.

Official health authority: the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. covers the Sikkim state health service

US Embassy: the United States Embassy in New Delhi.

Official tourism authority: Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism's official site. publishes the Inner Line Permit arrangements for Sikkim, the monastery visiting hours and the Skywalk and Khecheopalri access

Takeaways

The mountain is a dawn event. Book a room that faces it and stay more than one night.

Foreign nationals need a free Inner Line Permit. Carry photos and photocopies.

Find the Zangdok Palri on Pemayangtse's top floor. Almost nobody does.

October and November for the clearest air. Never the monsoon.

Solo women safety assessment: Sikkim is routinely described as one of the safest and best-run states in India and a woman travelling alone will feel the difference quickly: it is clean, orderly, has a high literacy rate and a strong local tourism industry, the staring and comment that wear visitors down elsewhere in north India are much reduced, and single travellers on the shared jeeps are entirely normal. Dress covered, remove shoes and cover your shoulders at the monasteries, and that is the whole of the social requirement. 112 IS THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY NUMBER, with 100 for police, 108 for an ambulance and 1091 the women's helpline, THOUGH DISTANCE IS THE REAL LIMIT: a district hospital 10km away at Gyalshing and four to five hours to anything larger. THE FCDO'S NORTH-EASTERN GUIDANCE APPLIES AND CONCERNS MOVEMENT RATHER THAN CRIME: protests and blockades are common across the region, can start without warning and disrupt the highways these states depend on, and inter-state border flareups happen; it separately advises against all but essential travel to Manipur, several hundred kilometres away. For Pelling the practical consequence is to leave slack in a schedule that depends on one road. THAT ROAD IS ALSO THE PRINCIPAL PHYSICAL RISK: four to five hours of narrow, frequently damaged mountain highway from Siliguri, landslide-prone in the monsoon, and the accidents happen to tired drivers on bad surfaces. Travel in daylight, use a hotel-arranged car or a shared jeep rather than the cheapest offer, and speak up about speed. THE ADMINISTRATIVE POINT IS THE ONE THAT CATCHES FOREIGNERS OUT: an Inner Line Permit is required for Sikkim, it is free and quick, and it is checked at Rangpo; arriving without photographs and passport copies turns a formality into a delay. And the thing nobody tells you: the mountain may simply not appear. Give it two or three mornings.
