Kaziranga National Park sits on the floodplain of the Brahmaputra in Assam, and it holds ABOUT TWO THIRDS OF THE WORLD'S GREATER ONE-HORNED RHINOCEROS. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has one of the highest tiger densities of any protected area on earth, and it is 430 square kilometres of elephant grass, swamp and semi-evergreen forest.

One honest note about the photographs. EVERY FRAME HERE IS WILDLIFE, which is appropriate for a park whose entire purpose is the animals, and it means you are seeing the subject rather than the setting. The grassland, the river and the tea estates around the park are described below.
What Is Here
THE RHINO IS NOT HARD TO SEE AND THAT IS UNUSUAL. Unlike a tiger, which is a matter of luck, rhinos at Kaziranga are reliably visible: the population is dense, the grassland is open in places, and most visitors see several in a single drive. There are also wild water buffalo, swamp deer, elephants, and more than 450 bird species.
There are two kinds of safari and they are genuinely different. THE JEEP SAFARI covers ground across four ranges, Kohora in the centre, Bagori in the west, Agoratoli in the east and Burapahar. THE ELEPHANT SAFARI goes at dawn into tall grass a vehicle cannot enter, and gets closer; it is also more controversial on welfare grounds and that is worth deciding about before you book rather than at the gate.
The elephant safari is the second image here, and it shows the habitat better than a close-up of an animal does: the grass is genuinely that tall.
THE PARK CLOSES FOR THE MONSOON AND THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT PLANNING FACT. Kaziranga is usually open from early November to late April and shut from May to October, because the Brahmaputra floods the park annually. The flood is not a nuisance; it is the process that maintains the grassland, and the animals move to the highlands along designated corridors while it happens.
The tea estates around the park are part of the trip, with several offering tours and accommodation, and Assam tea at the source is better than the version that leaves the state.
When to Go
November to April, and nothing else, because the park is closed. Confirm the current opening dates rather than assuming, as they move with the water.
November and December are cool, clear and green after the flood.
February and March are the best for sightings, as the grass is shorter and burned in patches, and the animals concentrate near water.
April is hot and humid and the park closes towards the end of it.
Dawn is cold on a jeep in December and January, often near 8C with a wind chill, and visitors who have come from Delhi or the plains are regularly unprepared.
Getting There
By air to Jorhat, about 100km and two and a half hours, or Guwahati, about 200km and four and a half hours. Guwahati has far more flights.
By train to Furkating or Guwahati, then road.
By road, National Highway 37 runs along the southern edge of the park, and Kohora is the main gate.
Safaris must be booked, elephant rides in particular, and the park operates permits by range and by time slot.
Is Kaziranga Safe for Women?
Kaziranga is a managed national park and Assam is calm. The risks are animals, roads and the season. The FCDO does publish advised-against areas for India, and being precise about them matters more than a general warning. It advises against all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, except air travel to and movement within the city of Jammu, and against all travel within 10km of the India-Pakistan border, where the Wagah-Attari crossing is closed. It advises against all but essential travel to the state of Manipur, including Imphal. None of that is anywhere near this destination, and it is worth knowing which parts of a very large country the warnings actually describe.
North-east India carries conditions rather than a prohibition, and they are about movement rather than crime. The FCDO records that sudden flareups and skirmishes happen along inter-state borders including the Assam-Meghalaya boundary, that there have been skirmishes on the India-Bangladesh border, and that protests, blockades and large gatherings are common across the region, can begin without warning, and disrupt traffic on the national highways that connect these states to each other and to Assam. Check with local authorities before travelling in the region, avoid any crowd that forms, and build slack into a schedule that depends on one road. Note separately that the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to MANIPUR because of ethnic violence since May 2023.
A ONE-HORNED RHINO IS DANGEROUS AND THIS IS NOT A FORMALITY. They are short-sighted, fast over short distances and will charge when surprised or when a calf is present. Stay in the vehicle, do not stand up for a photograph, and do not ask the driver to go closer. Fatalities in Kaziranga's buffer villages happen most years.
Wild water buffalo and elephants are more dangerous than the rhino and get less respect.
NATIONAL HIGHWAY 37 RUNS THROUGH THE ANIMAL CORRIDORS and animals cross it, especially during and after the flood. Night driving on this stretch is bad for you and worse for them.
Malaria and dengue are present in the lowland and the risk is highest at the start and end of the season.
The Kaziranga Packing List
Cold open-vehicle dawns, warm middays, high humidity and mosquitoes.
Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the most useful garment on a safari day for a reason specific to open vehicles: a December dawn at 8C with a jeep moving at 30kph is genuinely cold, and by ten o'clock it is 24C. Wool spans that without a change, covers your arms against mosquitoes at dawn, and does not rustle, which matters when you are trying not to startle an animal. Add a heavyweight merino base layer for November to February mornings.
A Columbia Powder Lite insulated hooded jacket for the dawn drive, which you will take off by mid morning, and a Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket, since the shoulder months bring showers.
Waterproof hiking shoes with Darn Tough merino socks: closed shoes for the grass, the leeches and the mud.
DEET insect repellent, which in an Assam floodplain is equipment rather than a nicety.
Not linked and worth packing: BINOCULARS, which transform the experience and which the jeeps do not supply; MUTED GREENS AND BROWNS rather than bright colours or white; A WIDE BRIM HAT; A DUST SCARF for the jeep tracks in March; A WATER PURIFICATION METHOD; and CASH, since the park fees, the camera charge and the guides are cash and ATMs are at Kohora only. Antimalarials are a conversation with a travel clinic before you leave.

Essential Resources for Women in Kaziranga
Emergency numbers: 112 is the single national emergency number and works from any phone. 100 reaches police directly, 108 ambulance and 101 fire. 1091 is the national women's helpline and 1098 the child helpline.
The park is closed from roughly May to October because the Brahmaputra floods it, and the opening dates move with the water: confirm them rather than assuming. A one-horned rhino is dangerous: short-sighted, fast over short distances, and liable to charge when surprised or protecting a calf. Stay seated in the vehicle, do not stand for a photograph, and do not ask the driver to go closer. WILD WATER BUFFALO AND ELEPHANTS ARE MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE RHINO and get less respect. NATIONAL HIGHWAY 37 CROSSES THE ANIMAL CORRIDORS and night driving there is bad for you and worse for them. MALARIA AND DENGUE ARE PRESENT in the lowland; speak to a travel clinic before you travel. DAWN IN DECEMBER AND JANUARY IS NEAR 8C in an open jeep. THE ELEPHANT SAFARI IS CONTROVERSIAL ON WELFARE GROUNDS and is worth deciding about in advance rather than at the gate.
US State Department travel advisory: the India advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.
UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/india, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.
Main hospital: there are clinics at Kohora and Bokakhat. The nearest hospitals of size are at Jorhat, two and a half hours away, and Guwahati, four and a half. Dial 108 for an ambulance and expect distance to be the constraint. Insurance covering road evacuation is worth having. Healthcare in the large Indian cities is genuinely good in the private hospitals and variable in the public ones, and the private sector expects payment or a direct insurance guarantee up front. Carry insurance with a high medical limit and repatriation cover, and carry proof of it. The commonest problem by far is not dramatic: it is stomach upset, so drink sealed bottled or filtered water, and be more careful with raw salad and cut fruit than with hot food cooked in front of you.
Official health authority: the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. covers the Assam state health service
US Embassy: the United States Embassy in New Delhi.
Official tourism authority: Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism's official site. publishes the park's annual opening and closing dates, the range-by-range safari permits and the elephant ride booking arrangements
Takeaways
Closed May to October. Confirm the dates before booking anything.
February and March for the best sightings, November for the greenest park.
Stay seated. Rhinos charge and people die in the buffer villages most years.
Dawn is near freezing in an open jeep. Pack the warm layer.
Solo women safety assessment: Kaziranga is straightforward for a woman alone because almost nothing about it is unstructured: you arrive at a lodge, you are driven to a gate at a booked time, you sit in a jeep with a government guide and a driver, and you come back. Assam is calm, the lodges along the highway are used to foreign visitors, and the staring that tires travellers elsewhere in north India is much less pronounced here. Dress covered and ordinary courtesy is the whole social requirement. 112 IS THE SINGLE NATIONAL EMERGENCY NUMBER, with 100 for police, 108 for an ambulance and 1091 the national women's helpline, THOUGH DISTANCE IS THE REAL CONSTRAINT: clinics at Kohora and Bokakhat, and two and a half hours to a hospital of any size at Jorhat. THE FCDO'S NORTH-EASTERN GUIDANCE APPLIES AND IS ABOUT MOVEMENT RATHER THAN CRIME: it records sudden flareups along inter-state borders including the Assam-Meghalaya boundary, and protests and blockades that are common across the region, begin without warning, and disrupt the national highways connecting these states. That matters for a trip whose arrival depends on one road from Guwahati or Jorhat, so leave slack and check locally before you set out. It separately advises against all but essential travel to MANIPUR, which is a different state several hundred kilometres away. THE DANGER THAT ACTUALLY KILLS PEOPLE HERE IS THE WILDLIFE, and not in the way visitors imagine: the rhino is the animal to respect, it is short-sighted and quick, it charges when startled or when a calf is near, and deaths occur most years in the villages around the park. In a vehicle you are safe if you behave: stay seated, do not stand up to photograph, and do not push the driver closer. Wild water buffalo and elephants deserve more caution than they get. THE REST IS CLIMATE AND SEASON: the park shuts for the monsoon flood, dawn in midwinter is near 8C in an open jeep, and the floodplain carries malaria and dengue, so repellent and a travel clinic conversation are both part of the preparation.
Reading On
Kaziranga is Assam and the north east has its own rhythm. The Kolkata packing list covers the city most trips route through, with the Gangtok packing list and Darjeeling packing list for the eastern Himalaya and the Varanasi packing list for the Ganges plain. West, the Varanasi packing list and Bodh Gaya packing list cover the Ganges plain. For other Indian wildlife, the Bharatpur packing list covers Keoladeo's wetland birds and the Ranthambore packing list the Rajasthani tiger reserve. In the hills the Almora packing list and Shimla packing list cover the western ranges. For the country the India travel guide for women and the India packing list carry the transport, the dress expectations and the practical material in full. For why wool suits a cold dawn that becomes a warm morning, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
