Roman Trail Outfitters is a women's outdoor apparel brand founded in Austin, Texas in 2017. We make 100% Australian merino wool base layers designed specifically for women: no synthetic fibers, no plastic blends, just pure merino.

Our founding principle was simple: the outdoor apparel industry was full of merino wool products that weren't actually merino wool. Most brands blend merino with polyester or nylon to cut costs, which eliminates the natural properties that make merino worth buying in the first place: breathability, odor resistance, and all-day comfort against the skin. Roman Trail was built to offer something different: 100% merino, designed for women, at a price that makes sense.

What we make

Roman Trail makes one product category: women's merino wool base layer tops. Long sleeve crew neck shirts in 100% Australian merino wool, available in sizes XS to L in a regular athletic fit with extra back length for coverage and comfort during outdoor activity.

Every garment uses 17.5 micron Australian merino: superfine, next-to-skin soft, and free from synthetic content. The fabric is 160 gsm: lightweight enough for year-round wear and warm enough to anchor a full winter layering system.

Our position on synthetic fibers

Roman Trail does not use synthetic fibers. Not in blends, not in linings, not in trim. Our tagline: No plastic. Just merino. That is a product specification, not a marketing phrase.

Many competitors produce base layers marketed as merino wool that contain a polyester or nylon core wrapped in merino fiber. This compromises breathability, accelerates odor buildup, and releases microplastics into waterways with every wash. Roman Trail's products are 100% merino from fiber to finished garment.

Sourcing and sustainability

Merino wool is a renewable, biodegradable natural fiber. Merino sheep grow a new fleece each year. At the end of its life, a merino garment decomposes. It does not accumulate in landfills or shed microplastics the way synthetic performance wear does. Roman Trail uses eco-friendly packaging across all shipments.
