Darjeeling Packing List for Women: Himalayan Cold, Tea Gardens and Kangchenjunga at Dawn

Tea plantations covering the hills around Darjeeling, Darjeeling packing list for women by Roman Trail Outfitters

Darjeeling sits at around 2,000 metres on a Himalayan ridge in the far north of West Bengal, and the single most useful thing to know is that it is cold, and that almost nothing is heated. Winter runs from December to February with daytime temperatures of 5°C to 10°C and nights near freezing, and even in the warm months of May and June it rarely passes 20°C. Guesthouses, restaurants and hotel rooms mostly have no central heating, relying on blankets and the occasional space heater. Pack as you would for a cold outdoor trip, and assume indoors is barely warmer than out.

The second thing to understand is that Darjeeling is a British hill station that became a tea capital, and the town still reflects both. It was developed from the 1830s as a summer retreat from Calcutta's heat, the tea industry followed, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the toy train, was built in the 1880s to serve it and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The population is substantially Nepali speaking Gorkha rather than Bengali, and the culture, food and politics of the hills are distinct from the plains below.

What Makes Darjeeling Different to Pack For

Cold, and no heating to retreat into

This is the mistake visitors make, especially those arriving from Kolkata where it is 30°C. Pack a full layering system rather than a single jacket, because you will wear it indoors as well as out. A heavyweight merino base layer is the right foundation from October through March, worn under a fleece mid layer, and it is the piece that makes an unheated room at six in the morning bearable.

Add a merino wool beanie and a pair of merino glove liners. Both weigh nothing, and the dawn viewpoint trip is the coldest thing you will do in India.

The monsoon is heavy and brings landslides

June to September is the monsoon, and Darjeeling gets a great deal of rain: the hills are steep, deforested in places, and landslides regularly close the roads up from the plains, sometimes for days. The famous mountain views disappear entirely behind cloud for most of the season.

If you travel then, pack a packable rain jacket, expect delays, and do not book a tight onward connection. Leeches are present on the tea estate paths in the wet months. The clear seasons are October to early December, which gives the best mountain views of the year, and March to May.

Steep, wet, uneven ground

Darjeeling is built on a ridge and everything is a slope or a staircase. The lanes are narrow, often wet, frequently crowded, and the tea garden paths are mud and stone. A pair of waterproof hiking shoes is the sensible single pair for this trip, and they carry you through the estates, the Mall and any of the shorter Singalila treks.

The Darjeeling Packing List

Layers

Base layer, fleece, and an insulated windproof outer, plus the hat and gloves. Two merino tops cover a week and, in a town where laundry is slow and rooms are damp, the odour resistance matters more than usual. Long trousers rather than shorts, which nobody wears here anyway.

Darjeeling is socially conservative in dress terms, more so than Kolkata. Covered shoulders and knees is the comfortable standard, and warm clothing achieves that automatically for most of the year.

Footwear and socks

Covered above. Add warm socks, more pairs than you think, since damp feet in an unheated room is the standard Darjeeling complaint. Wool over cotton for exactly that reason.

Practical kit

A torch or headlamp, since power cuts are routine in the hills. A power bank. Rehydration salts and any medication you rely on, since pharmacies are limited. Packing cubes help on a route that pairs Darjeeling with Kolkata or Sikkim, which need entirely different clothing.

Cash in rupees. ATMs exist in town but run dry, card acceptance is patchy outside hotels, and the tea estates and shared jeeps are cash only.

What to Wear at Key Sites

Tiger Hill at dawn

The classic Darjeeling excursion is a jeep up to Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, with Everest visible on exceptionally clear days. Departure is around four in the morning, and the viewpoint is exposed and crowded.

This is the coldest hour of your trip and people consistently underdress for it. Wear everything: base layer, fleece, jacket, hat, gloves. Take a flask if your guesthouse will fill one. And set expectations honestly, because the mountain is frequently in cloud and a clear morning is luck rather than entitlement. October and November give the best odds.

The tea estates

Happy Valley is the closest estate to town and the easiest to visit, with tours of the factory when it is processing. The larger estates, Makaibari and Glenburn among them, are further out and several offer stays. Plucking season runs roughly March to November, and the first flush in spring is the prized one.

Practically: the paths through the bushes are steep, muddy and slippery, so the hiking shoes rather than anything else. Leeches in the wet months. Ask before photographing pluckers, who are working rather than performing, and be aware that the tea industry here has a long and unresolved history of low wages and poor estate conditions, which is worth knowing rather than ignoring while you buy a tin.

The toy train and the town

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs a joy ride between Darjeeling and Ghum, the highest station in India, with steam services on some departures. It is slow, cold in an open carriage, and charming. Book ahead in season. The full run down to New Jalpaiguri takes most of a day and is frequently disrupted by landslides.

In town, the Mall and Chowrasta are the flat social centre, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the adjoining zoo cover Tenzing Norgay and the snow leopard breeding programme, and the Peace Pagoda is a steep but worthwhile walk.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Bagdogra and the railhead is New Jalpaiguri, both about three hours below by road, on a winding mountain route usually done by shared jeep. It is a long, cold, bumpy trip and worth factoring in rather than treating as a transfer.

What Not to Bring

Leave the assumption that India is hot. Darjeeling in January is a cold mountain town. Leave shorts and beachwear. Leave smooth soled shoes for the wet slopes. Leave a large suitcase, since the shared jeeps have limited space and the guesthouse is often up a staircase.

Leave a rigid schedule in the monsoon. The road can close and no amount of planning fixes it.

Essential Resources for Women in Darjeeling

Emergency numbers in India: 112 is the unified national emergency number. Police 100, ambulance 108, fire 101. 1091 is the national women's helpline and West Bengal operates a state women's helpline on 1090.

Tourist police: West Bengal Police maintain a presence around the Mall and Chowrasta, and the Darjeeling tourist office near the Mall is the practical first stop for a problem or a dispute with an operator. Use 112 for anything urgent.

US Embassy in New Delhi: Shantipath, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110021, telephone +91 11 2419 8000, at in.usembassy.gov. The US Consulate General in Kolkata is the nearest consular post, around twelve hours away by road and rail or a short flight from Bagdogra. Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before you travel.

Main hospital or clinic: Darjeeling District Hospital serves the town, and Planters Hospital is the private option. Facilities in the hills are limited, and for anything serious the referral is down to Siliguri, three hours away on a road that can close, or on to Kolkata. Confirm your travel insurance covers evacuation, particularly if any trekking in the Singalila range is planned.

Official health authority: the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at mohfw.gov.in.

US State Department travel advisory for India: current advisory level and detail, which carries specific guidance on sexual assault risk for women travelling in India and separate notes on the northeastern states and border regions. Read it directly rather than relying on this page.

UK FCDO travel advice for India: entry requirements, safety and health guidance, which is usually the better source on landslides, monsoon road closures and regional political disruption.

Official tourism authority: Incredible India at incredibleindia.gov.in. West Bengal's state tourism portal was not serving reliably at the time of writing, so check permits, train bookings and current road conditions through Incredible India, the railway booking system and your accommodation directly.

Solo women safety assessment: Darjeeling is one of the most comfortable places in India for a woman travelling alone. The hill culture is markedly different from the north Indian plains: Gorkha and Nepali social norms are more relaxed about women moving around independently, staring and street harassment are noticeably less frequent than in Delhi or Varanasi, and solo women travellers are common and unremarkable here. Violent crime against visitors is rare. The realistic risks are environmental and logistical rather than social. Road travel is the most serious: the mountain roads are narrow, winding and shared with heavy vehicles, drivers overtake on blind bends, and shared jeeps are often overloaded, which makes the journey up and down statistically the most dangerous part of the trip. Travel in daylight and do not accept a jeep that is visibly overfull. Landslides close roads without warning in the monsoon. Cold is a genuine hazard in unheated accommodation, particularly for anyone arriving underdressed from the plains. Political strikes, bandhs, have historically shut the hills for extended periods over Gorkhaland statehood, and while the situation has been quieter recently, it is worth checking current conditions before travelling. In town, walking alone in the evening around the Mall is fine and normal, though the lanes are steep, poorly lit and slippery, so a torch is worth more than caution.
