Packing List for Orlando, Florida: What Women Should Bring

View of the iconic Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, with crowd and statue.

Orlando receives more visitors than any other city in the United States, and the overwhelming majority of them never see it. What they see is a cluster of resorts and parks spread across twenty miles of central Florida pine flatwoods, which is a magnificent thing to visit and is not a city. The city itself, thirty minutes north east, has a lake with swans in the middle of it, a brick-paved railway suburb with a serious art museum, and almost no tourists.

Walt Disney World Is Not in Orlando, and That Is Not Pedantry

IT MATTERS BECAUSE IT DECIDES WHERE YOU SLEEP AND HOW MUCH YOU DRIVE. Walt Disney World sits about twenty miles south west of downtown Orlando in its own special district around Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, and it is roughly the size of a small city in its own right. UNIVERSAL ORLANDO IS CLOSER IN, on International Drive, and SEAWORLD is between them. INTERNATIONAL DRIVE AND LAKE BUENA VISTA ARE WHERE MOST VISITORS STAY and they are resort corridors: hotels, outlet malls, chain restaurants, and traffic. THE ACTUAL CITY, meaning downtown, Thornton Park, Mills 50, College Park and WINTER PARK, is a pleasant, leafy, inexpensive place with good food and essentially no theme park visitors in it. DECIDE WHICH TRIP YOU ARE TAKING BEFORE YOU BOOK A HOTEL, because the two are a 30 to 45 minute drive apart and doing both from one base means a lot of I-4.

What Is Here

THE PARKS ARE THE REASON AND THE SYSTEMS ARE THE PART TO RESEARCH, NOT THE RIDES. Walt Disney World runs four theme parks and two water parks; Universal Orlando runs Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, the Volcano Bay water park and EPIC UNIVERSE, which opened in 2025 and is the largest new park built in Florida in decades. THE TICKETING, RESERVATION AND QUEUE-SKIPPING SYSTEMS AT BOTH RESORTS CHANGE REGULARLY, SOMETIMES MID-SEASON, and anything printed about them ages badly, including park reservation requirements, paid queue products and park-hopping rules. READ EACH RESORT'S OWN SITE AND APP IN THE WEEK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL, download the apps before you arrive, and expect to do the day's planning inside them. That is the single most useful sentence in this post about the parks.

EXPECT TO WALK EIGHT TO TWELVE MILES A DAY, which is what actually ruins people's holidays here. A full park day is a long hike on hot tarmac with queuing in between, and the commonest complaints at the first aid stations are blisters, heat exhaustion and sunburn rather than anything exotic. SHOES AND WATER MATTER MORE THAN ANY OTHER PACKING DECISION ON THIS LIST.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER IS AN HOUR EAST AND IS THE BEST DAY TRIP IN FLORIDA. The visitor complex holds a flown Space Shuttle, Atlantis, and a complete Saturn V, and LAUNCHES ARE FREQUENT NOW RATHER THAN RARE, with several a month from Cape Canaveral; a launch is visible from much of central Florida and the schedule slips constantly, so treat a specific launch as a bonus rather than a plan.

Captivating view of downtown Orlando skyline framed by trees at Lake Eola.

LAKE EOLA IS THE SECOND IMAGE AND IT IS THE REAL CITY'S CENTRE. A spring-fed lake in downtown Orlando with a one-mile paved loop, a fountain, swan boats and actual swans, a Sunday farmers market and the skyline behind it. The THORNTON PARK district beside it and MILLS 50, the Vietnamese district, hold the city's best independent restaurants.

WINTER PARK IS THE PLACE TO SPEND HALF A DAY OFF. A brick-streeted suburb with Park Avenue's shops, the CHARLES HOSMER MORSE MUSEUM, which holds the largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany glass anywhere including his rebuilt chapel from the 1893 Chicago fair, the Rollins College campus and the SCENIC BOAT TOUR, an hour through canals between the lakes, which is cheap and lovely and has run since 1938. The third image is that older downtown architecture.

HARRY P LEU GARDENS is 50 acres of camellias and old oaks on Lake Rowena, and the ORLANDO MUSEUM OF ART and the Mennello are both small and worth an hour.

THE SPRINGS ARE THE BEST NATURAL THING NEAR ORLANDO AND THEY ARE 72F ALL YEAR. WEKIWA SPRINGS STATE PARK, 20 minutes north, and the larger Blue Spring and Silver Glen further out, are artesian springs with designated swimming areas, canoeing and cypress. BLUE SPRING FILLS WITH MANATEES FROM ROUGHLY NOVEMBER TO MARCH, when hundreds shelter in the warm water, and swimming is closed then for exactly that reason. STATE PARKS FILL AND CLOSE THEIR GATES on hot weekends, often before mid-morning, so arrive early and check the park's own page.

GATORLAND, an old-fashioned 1949 roadside attraction, is more honest and more fun than it sounds, and is where to see alligators safely rather than in a lake.

When to Go

LATE OCTOBER to EARLY MAY is the comfortable half of the year: 70F to 80F, lower humidity, far less rain.

JANUARY and FEBRUARY are the best weather and the thinnest crowds, with occasional cold snaps that can drop into the 40s and close water parks.

OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER are the sweet spot: warm, drier, and the Halloween and Christmas park events running.

JUNE TO SEPTEMBER IS HOT, HUMID AND STORMY, AND IT IS ALSO WHEN SCHOOL HOLIDAYS FILL THE PARKS. Heat indices well above 100F, afternoon thunderstorms nearly every day, and the longest queues of the year. If that is your only window, do the parks at opening, retreat indoors or to the hotel pool from one until four, and return in the evening when it is cooler and emptier.

HURRICANE SEASON RUNS 1 JUNE TO 30 NOVEMBER and inland Orlando is not immune. HURRICANE IAN IN SEPTEMBER 2022 crossed the peninsula and caused serious inland flooding here, with the parks closed for two days, which is the thing people assume cannot happen eighty miles from the coast.

AVOID, IF YOU CAN: the weeks around Christmas and New Year, Easter, American Thanksgiving and early-to-mid March spring break, which are the four highest-crowd periods of the year.

Getting There

ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL, MCO, is one of the busiest airports in the United States, about ten miles south east of downtown and twenty five from Disney, with a vast international network. ORLANDO SANFORD, SFB, is smaller and further north and takes charter and budget traffic.

THE BRIGHTLINE TRAIN IS NEW AND CHANGES THE OPTIONS. It runs from a station inside Orlando International's terminal complex down the east coast to West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and MIAMI IN AROUND THREE AND A HALF HOURS, which makes a combined Orlando and South Florida trip possible without a car for the long leg.

Amtrak's Silver Service calls at Orlando and Winter Park, and the Auto Train from Virginia carries cars to Sanford.

YOU PROBABLY WANT A CAR, AND THE EXCEPTION IS A SINGLE-RESORT TRIP. If you are staying on Disney property and only visiting Disney, their internal buses, monorails and boats cover everything and a car is a liability. The same is true for a Universal-only stay. For anything else, including the springs, Winter Park, Kennedy Space Center or mixing resorts, the alternative is a lot of expensive rideshares. I-4 IS CONGESTED AND PERMANENTLY UNDER WORKS and toll roads are everywhere, so take the rental's transponder.

Is Orlando Safe for Women?

The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States and no country-level warning. Its guidance concentrates on the practical differences a British visitor meets: entry requirements and ESTA, the cost of healthcare without insurance, extreme weather including hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts between June and November, and wildfire and heat risk in the west and south-west.

The tourist areas of Orlando are heavily policed, busy from early morning until late at night and about as safe as any place in this library. The theme parks themselves have their own security, bag checks and metal detectors, International Drive is busy and lit, and a woman alone in any of it is completely unremarkable. The city's violent crime is above the American average and is concentrated in particular residential neighbourhoods well away from the resort corridors and downtown core. Downtown's Orange Avenue bar strip is the one place with the usual late-weekend problems of a drinking district, so rideshare home from it. CAR BREAK-INS IN PARK AND OUTLET-MALL CAR PARKS are the commonest crime against visitors: leave nothing visible, including in the boot.

CENTRAL FLORIDA HAS THE HIGHEST LIGHTNING DENSITY IN THE UNITED STATES AND THAT IS THE REAL DAILY HAZARD. Orlando sits in the corridor between Tampa and the Cape that forecasters call Lightning Alley, Florida leads the country in lightning deaths, and from June to September thunderstorms build almost every afternoon. THE PARKS EVACUATE OUTDOOR RIDES, POOLS AND WATER PARKS WHEN LIGHTNING IS DETECTED NEARBY, which is why a storm can shut half a park day. The rule is the National Weather Service's own: WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS, into a building or a hard-topped vehicle rather than under a tree or a queue canopy, and wait thirty minutes after the last thunder. Build the afternoon storm into the plan rather than being surprised by it.

EVERY FRESHWATER BODY IN FLORIDA SHOULD BE ASSUMED TO HOLD ALLIGATORS, INCLUDING ORNAMENTAL LAKES AT HOTELS. There are over a million in the state, they are present in lakes, ponds, canals and ditches, and attacks are rare but real: a toddler was killed at a Disney resort lagoon in 2016. THE RULES ARE SIMPLE AND NOT OPTIONAL. Swim only in designated, signed swimming areas or pools. NEVER SWIM AT DAWN, DUSK OR AT NIGHT, when alligators feed. Keep away from the water's edge, keep dogs and children back from it, and never feed one, which is both illegal and the reason a gator loses its fear of people. In the springs, obey the signs and the park staff.

A RARER FRESHWATER RISK WORTH ONE SENTENCE: warm, stagnant fresh water in Florida can carry NAEGLERIA FOWLERI, an amoeba that causes a very rare but almost always fatal brain infection, entering through the nose. Infections are extremely rare, the sensible precautions are to keep your head above water or hold your nose in warm shallow stagnant lakes in high summer, and the spring runs, which are cold and fast-flowing, are much lower risk.

HEAT IS THE LIKELIEST THING TO SPOIL A PARK DAY, with heat indices above 100F for weeks, little shade on the paths, and eight to twelve miles of walking. Heat exhaustion in queues is routine. Drink constantly, use the free water stations, and take the midday break seriously.

MOSQUITOES ARE SERIOUS NEAR WATER FROM SPRING TO AUTUMN, and FLORIDA IS A PERMITLESS-CARRY STATE, though firearms are prohibited at all the major parks and resorts and the checks at the gates enforce it.

The Orlando Packing List

Subtropical heat and humidity, daily storms for a third of the year, heavy air conditioning indoors, and a great deal of walking.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is a better theme park garment than it sounds, which is worth explaining rather than asserting: a park day is twelve hours of sweating, queuing in shade, sitting in a cooled indoor ride, getting soaked on a water ride and drying out again, repeated, and cotton holds all of that against your skin while fine merino moves it away and does not smell by evening. It also covers your shoulders through eight hours of Florida sun without sunscreen on every square inch. In the cooler months a heavyweight merino base layer handles the January cold snaps, which genuinely surprise people in Florida.

A long sun hoodie and a wide brim UPF sun hat, which in a queue with no shade are the difference between an afternoon and a ruined evening.

Properly broken-in walking shoes and Darn Tough merino socks, which are the two most important items on this list: ten miles a day on hot tarmac in new shoes is how people end up in the first aid station.

A large insulated water bottle, because both resorts have free water stations and a cold bottle is worth more here than almost any paid extra.

Not linked and worth packing: A CHEAP PONCHO, which is the correct answer to both the afternoon storms and the water rides and is far better than an umbrella in a crowd; A PHONE POWER BANK, since the park apps drain a battery by mid-afternoon and the whole day runs on them, and our registry carries no entry for one; A DRY BAG OR ZIP BAGS for phones on water rides; INSECT REPELLENT for the springs and the evenings, which we have deliberately left unlinked here because the list is already at its six-link limit with the things that matter more on a park day; AND BLISTER PLASTERS, which no registry entry covers and which you will want on day two. The US is almost entirely card-based with tipping at 18 to 20 per cent.

Essential Resources for Women in Orlando

Emergency numbers: 911 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile. Calls are answered locally and dispatchers will stay on the line. For non-urgent police matters many cities also run a 311 information line.

WALT DISNEY WORLD IS NOT IN ORLANDO: it is about twenty miles south west in its own district, Universal is on International Drive, and the real city, downtown and Winter Park, is 30 to 45 minutes from the resorts, so choose your base before booking. THE TICKETING, PARK RESERVATION AND PAID QUEUE SYSTEMS AT BOTH RESORTS CHANGE REGULARLY, SOMETIMES MID-SEASON, so read each resort's own site and app in the week before travelling and download the apps in advance. EXPECT TO WALK EIGHT TO TWELVE MILES A DAY, and note that blisters, heat exhaustion and sunburn are what the first aid stations actually treat. CENTRAL FLORIDA HAS THE HIGHEST LIGHTNING DENSITY IN THE UNITED STATES and Florida leads the country in lightning deaths; from June to September storms build most afternoons and THE PARKS EVACUATE OUTDOOR RIDES, POOLS AND WATER PARKS when lightning is detected. WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS, into a building or a hard-topped vehicle rather than under a tree or a queue canopy, and wait thirty minutes after the last thunder. ASSUME EVERY FRESHWATER BODY HOLDS ALLIGATORS, including hotel lakes: swim only in designated signed areas or pools, NEVER AT DAWN, DUSK OR NIGHT, keep back from the water's edge and never feed one. WARM STAGNANT FRESH WATER CAN CARRY NAEGLERIA FOWLERI, a very rare but usually fatal amoeba entering through the nose, so keep your head up in warm shallow lakes in high summer; the cold fast spring runs are much lower risk. STATE PARKS INCLUDING WEKIWA FILL AND CLOSE THEIR GATES on hot weekends, often before mid-morning. BLUE SPRING CLOSES TO SWIMMERS ROUGHLY NOVEMBER TO MARCH because hundreds of manatees shelter there. HURRICANE SEASON IS 1 JUNE TO 30 NOVEMBER and inland Orlando is not immune: HURRICANE IAN IN 2022 caused serious inland flooding and closed the parks for two days. THE BRIGHTLINE TRAIN RUNS FROM THE AIRPORT TO MIAMI IN ABOUT THREE AND A HALF HOURS. CAR BREAK-INS IN PARK AND MALL CAR PARKS are the commonest crime against visitors. Florida is a permitless-carry state, and firearms are prohibited at all the major parks.

US State Department travel advisory: there is none, and this is not an omission. The State Department issues travel advisories for other countries, not for the United States itself, so no US advisory for this destination exists to link. In its place, the Government of Canada advice for the United States gives an equivalent third-country assessment.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits. The FCDO names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States. The same advice also covers Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Main hospital: Orlando Health's Orlando Regional Medical Center is the region's Level I trauma centre with a 24 hour emergency department, and AdventHealth Orlando is the other major one; both resorts also run their own first aid stations inside every park, which handle heat, blisters and minor injuries and are free to use. Dial 911 for police, ambulance or fire, and note that LIGHTNING, FLOOD AND HURRICANE INFORMATION comes from the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center rather than 911, which is for emergencies in progress. This is the single biggest practical difference for a visitor: there is no public health system, an emergency room visit without insurance can run into thousands of dollars, and an ambulance is billed separately and is not free. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is not optional in the United States, and you should carry your policy number and the insurer's 24 hour number somewhere you can reach them. Urgent care clinics handle anything short of an emergency far more cheaply and quickly than an emergency room, and are the right choice for a sprain, an infection or stitches.

Official health authority: the CDC travellers' health pages, the US federal health authority for visitors. covers the US public health guidance, with the National Weather Service the authority for lightning and heat advisories and the National Hurricane Center for storm tracks

Embassy contact: the United States is the host country, so there is no US embassy to contact. Your own country's embassy is in Washington DC, with consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Boston. Find yours before you travel and save the number.

Official tourism authority: Brand USA, the national tourism marketing body. covers Orlando and Florida visitor information, with each resort's own site the authority for ticketing, park reservations and the current queue systems, and the Florida State Parks service for the springs

Takeaways

Read the resorts' own apps in the week before you go. The systems change.

Broken-in shoes and a water bottle matter more than any paid extra.

When thunder roars, go indoors. The parks will make you anyway.

Never swim in fresh water that is not a designated swimming area.

Solo women safety assessment: Orlando is one of the simplest places in the United States to visit alone. The resort areas are heavily policed, busy from early morning until late at night, and the parks themselves have bag checks, metal detectors and their own security, so a woman on her own in any of it is entirely unremarkable, and solo visitors have the quiet advantage of the single-rider queues. The city's violent crime is above the American average and is concentrated in residential neighbourhoods well away from the resort corridors and the downtown core; downtown's Orange Avenue bar strip has the usual late-weekend problems of a drinking district, so take a rideshare home from it, and the crime most likely to touch you is a car break-in in a park or outlet-mall car park, so leave nothing visible including in the boot. 911 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE, Orlando Regional Medical Center is the Level I trauma centre, and the free first aid stations inside every park handle heat, blisters and minor injuries. THE RISKS HERE ARE ENVIRONMENTAL AND TWO OF THEM ARE UNDER-APPRECIATED. Central Florida has the highest lightning density in the country and Florida leads the United States in lightning deaths, so from June to September an afternoon storm will shut outdoor rides and pools whether you planned for it or not: build the break into the day, and when thunder sounds, get inside a building or a hard-topped car rather than under a queue canopy. And every freshwater lake, pond and canal in this state should be assumed to hold alligators, hotel lagoons included, so swim only in designated areas or pools and never at dawn, dusk or night. The likeliest thing to actually spoil your trip, though, is neither: it is ten miles a day of walking in heat in new shoes.

Reading On

Orlando pairs naturally with the coasts now that the train runs: the Miami packing list is three and a half hours away on Brightline, and the Fort Lauderdale packing list is a stop closer and covers the same hurricane planning. South from there, the Key West packing list is the end of the road and the sharpest possible contrast with a theme park holiday. North, the Savannah packing list and the Charleston packing list are four and five hours up I-95 and carry the Low Country, with the Atlanta packing list inland. For the other great American space destination, the Houston packing list covers mission control to this city's launch pads. For the country, the United States travel guide for women carries the transport, the health insurance question and the regions in full. For why wool beats cotton across twelve hours of sweating, queuing and cooled indoor rides, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection. West across the peninsula, the Tampa packing list and the St Petersburg packing list cover the Gulf coast ninety minutes away, and the St Augustine packing list the oldest city on the Atlantic side.
