Packing List for Atlanta, Georgia: What Women Should Bring

Urban street with view of downtown Atlanta skyline, capturing city's architectural charm.

Atlanta is the capital of Georgia, the commercial centre of the American South, and the city where Martin Luther King Jr was born, preached and is buried. It has the busiest passenger airport in the world, more tree cover than almost any large American city, and summer humidity that decides what you can physically do between noon and four.

What Is Here

THE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK IS FREE AND IT IS THE REASON TO COME. A National Park Service site in the Sweet Auburn district taking in his birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church where he and his father preached, the King Center and the tomb. ENTRY IS FREE; THE BIRTH HOME ITSELF IS LIMITED AND TICKETED and availability is best early in the day, so check the park's own alerts page the day before. Allow half a day and do not rush it.

THE CENTER FOR CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS sits downtown beside the aquarium and links the American movement to current struggles elsewhere. Its lunch counter sit-in simulation is the part people remember. It is ticketed and worth it.

Stunning view of Atlanta skyline at sunset, captured from Stone Mountain, Georgia.

STONE MOUNTAIN IS WHERE THE SECOND IMAGE WAS TAKEN FROM, AND THE CARVING ON IT IS A CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL. It is said plainly because the park markets itself as a family attraction: the relief depicts Confederate leaders, was begun in 1923 with Ku Klux Klan involvement in its origins and completed in 1972, and it is the largest Confederate monument in the United States. The mountain itself is a genuinely good granite dome with a free walk-up trail and a cable car, and the view back to the city is the one in our photograph. VISITORS SHOULD KNOW WHAT THE CARVING IS BEFORE THEY ARRIVE rather than after.

THE BELTLINE IS THE BEST FREE THING IN THE CITY. A former rail loop being converted into a walking and cycling corridor, with the Eastside Trail from Piedmont Park through Old Fourth Ward to Krog Street and Inman Park the busiest and best stretch. It is how Atlanta became walkable in parts.

PIEDMONT PARK, THE ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN AND THE AQUARIUM are the other large draws, the aquarium being one of the biggest in the world and reliably busy.

THE THIRD IMAGE IS THE AERIAL WITH THE SKYVIEW WHEEL, and worth saying honestly: our photographs of Atlanta are mostly the skyline from various distances. The things most worth coming for, the King park and the BeltLine among them, are described in this post and not shown in it.

ATLANTA IS A MAJOR BLACK CULTURAL AND BUSINESS CENTRE, home to Spelman, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta, a large film industry and a music scene that shaped hip hop. That is not decoration on the itinerary; it is the character of the city.

When to Go

April to early May and late September to early November. Warm, less humid, and the tree cover at its best.

JUNE TO SEPTEMBER IS GENUINELY HARD. Temperatures in the nineties Fahrenheit with high humidity and daily afternoon thunderstorms, and the heat index routinely exceeds 100. Plan indoor hours in the middle of the day; this is not a city you walk across in August afternoons.

MARCH TO MAY IS SEVERE POLLEN SEASON AND IT IS WORSE HERE THAN ALMOST ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES. Atlanta's tree cover is the reason: oak, pine and birch produce counts that coat cars in yellow and affect people who have never had hay fever. If you are at all sensitive, bring antihistamines rather than planning to buy them.

Winter is mild and wet, dipping to freezing at night. THE CITY HANDLES SNOW BADLY and even an inch can close roads and schools, because the infrastructure is not built for it.

Getting There

By air, Hartsfield-Jackson is the world's busiest airport and MARTA's train runs from inside the terminal to downtown in about twenty minutes, which is one of the best airport transit links in the country.

By train, Amtrak's Crescent stops at Peachtree Station, which is a small station rather than a hub.

By car, at the junction of Interstates 75, 85 and 20. ATLANTA TRAFFIC IS AMONG THE WORST IN THE UNITED STATES and the Connector downtown is reliably congested.

MARTA COVERS LESS OF THE CITY THAN VISITORS EXPECT. Two rail lines, useful for the airport, downtown, Midtown and Buckhead, and not much else. Atlanta is car-dependent, ride-hailing is the practical default, and the streetcar is a small downtown loop. Plan around what MARTA actually reaches.

Is Atlanta Safe for Women?

The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States and no country-level warning. Its guidance concentrates on the practical differences a British visitor meets: entry requirements and ESTA, the cost of healthcare without insurance, extreme weather including hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts between June and November, and wildfire and heat risk in the west and south-west.

ATLANTA'S PROPERTY CRIME RATE IS ABOVE THE AMERICAN AVERAGE AND ITS VIOLENT CRIME IS GEOGRAPHICALLY CONCENTRATED, overwhelmingly away from visitor districts and not aimed at tourists. The practical version: Midtown, Virginia-Highland, Inman Park, Decatur, Buckhead and the BeltLine corridor are comfortable, and downtown is busy by day and empties sharply after office hours, which is when it feels least comfortable. CAR BREAK-INS ARE THE COMMONEST CRIME AGAINST VISITORS, particularly in parking decks and at trailheads, so leave nothing visible. Use ride-hailing at night rather than walking between districts, since the gaps between them are long, dark and built for cars.

HEAT AND HUMIDITY ARE THE REAL HAZARD HERE and heat illness is the likeliest way to be hurt. A heat index above 100 means sweat stops cooling you efficiently. Drink before you are thirsty, use the middle of the day indoors, and treat the BeltLine in an August afternoon as exercise rather than sightseeing.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND TORNADO WATCHES ARE NORMAL IN SPRING AND SUMMER. Lightning, hail and flash flooding arrive quickly. Learn the difference between a watch, meaning conditions are possible, and a warning, meaning take shelter now, and keep weather alerts on your phone. A tornado struck downtown in 2008, so it is not hypothetical.

The hills are steeper than Atlanta's reputation suggests and sidewalks disappear without warning on larger roads, which is the practical pedestrian risk.

Crossing wide arterial roads on foot is genuinely dangerous here, as it is across the car-built South. Use signalled crossings.

The Atlanta Packing List

Heat, humidity, sudden storms, hills and heavy air conditioning.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women solves a problem specific to the American South that visitors rarely anticipate: you move between ninety-degree humidity outdoors and aggressive air conditioning indoors all day, and wool handles both without the clamminess of a damp cotton shirt in a cold building. From December to February add a heavyweight merino base layer.

A Columbia Fast Trek II fleece, which in summer is an INDOOR garment for over-cooled museums and restaurants, and a Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket for afternoon storms that arrive in minutes.

A long sun hoodie for the BeltLine and Stone Mountain, where shade is intermittent, and a wide brim sun hat.

Walking shoes with grip, because Atlanta is hillier than expected and this is a walking city in patches rather than throughout.

Not linked and worth packing: ANTIHISTAMINES IF YOU VISIT BETWEEN MARCH AND MAY, which is the most useful line in this post for anyone who has ever had hay fever, because Atlanta's pollen counts are among the highest in the country and affect people who are usually unaffected; A LARGE WATER BOTTLE; AN UMBRELLA, which unusually for this library is the right tool, since summer storms are vertical and windless rather than driven; and A LIGHT LAYER FOR INDOORS IN SUMMER. The US is almost entirely card-based and tipping is expected at 18 to 20 per cent.

Essential Resources for Women in Atlanta

Emergency numbers: 911 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile. Calls are answered locally and dispatchers will stay on the line. For non-urgent police matters many cities also run a 311 information line.

Heat is the likeliest way to be hurt in Atlanta: June to September brings temperatures in the nineties Fahrenheit with high humidity and a heat index routinely above 100, at which point sweating no longer cools you efficiently. Drink before you are thirsty, spend the middle of the day indoors and treat the BeltLine in an August afternoon as exercise. MARCH TO MAY IS SEVERE POLLEN SEASON, among the worst in the United States because of the city's tree cover, and it affects people with no history of hay fever, so bring antihistamines rather than planning to buy them. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND TORNADO WATCHES ARE NORMAL in spring and summer, with lightning, hail and flash flooding arriving fast: a WATCH means conditions are possible and a WARNING means shelter immediately, and a tornado hit downtown in 2008. Keep phone weather alerts on. THE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK IS FREE but the birth home tour is limited and ticketed, so check the park's alerts page the day before. STONE MOUNTAIN'S CARVING IS THE LARGEST CONFEDERATE MONUMENT IN THE UNITED STATES, which visitors should know before arriving. MARTA'S TWO RAIL LINES COVER LESS OF THE CITY THAN EXPECTED, reaching the airport, downtown, Midtown and Buckhead, so ride-hailing is the practical default. CAR BREAK-INS ARE THE COMMONEST CRIME AGAINST VISITORS, especially in parking decks. Sidewalks vanish on larger roads and crossing wide arterials on foot is genuinely dangerous. THE CITY CLOSES IN SNOW, even an inch.

US State Department travel advisory: there is none, and this is not an omission. The State Department issues travel advisories for other countries, not for the United States itself, so no US advisory for this destination exists to link. In its place, the Government of Canada advice for the United States gives an equivalent third-country assessment.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits. The FCDO names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States. The same advice also covers Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Main hospital: Grady Memorial Hospital on Jesse Hill Jr Drive is the region's Level I trauma centre with a 24 hour emergency department, and Emory University Hospital Midtown on Peachtree Street is the other central option. Dial 911 for police, ambulance or fire. This is the single biggest practical difference for a visitor: there is no public health system, an emergency room visit without insurance can run into thousands of dollars, and an ambulance is billed separately and is not free. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is not optional in the United States, and you should carry your policy number and the insurer's 24 hour number somewhere you can reach them. Urgent care clinics handle anything short of an emergency far more cheaply and quickly than an emergency room, and are the right choice for a sprain, an infection or stitches.

Official health authority: the CDC travellers' health pages, the US federal health authority for visitors. covers the US public health guidance, with the National Weather Service the authority for heat advisories and tornado warnings

Embassy contact: the United States is the host country, so there is no US embassy to contact. Your own country's embassy is in Washington DC, with consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Boston. Find yours before you travel and save the number.

Official tourism authority: Brand USA, the national tourism marketing body. covers Atlanta and Georgia visitor information, with the National Park Service the authority for the Martin Luther King Jr National Historical Park opening and tour availability

Takeaways

The King National Historical Park is free. Book the birth home tour early.

Bring antihistamines from March to May. The pollen here is extreme.

MARTA reaches less than you think. Budget for ride-hailing.

Know what the Stone Mountain carving is before you go.

Solo women safety assessment: Atlanta is comfortable to visit alone with ordinary American big-city care and one structural caveat: the city is built for cars, so the distances between pleasant districts are long, dark after dusk and often without continuous sidewalks, which makes ride-hailing the realistic default rather than a luxury. Midtown, Virginia-Highland, Inman Park, Decatur, Buckhead and the BeltLine corridor are all easy and busy, and eating alone anywhere in them is unremarkable. Downtown is lively by day and empties sharply after office hours, which is when it feels least welcoming. The city's property crime rate runs above the American average and its violent crime is concentrated well away from visitor areas and not aimed at tourists; the thing most likely to happen to you is a car break-in, particularly in a parking deck or at a trailhead, so leave nothing visible in a vehicle. 911 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE free from any phone, and Grady Memorial Hospital on Jesse Hill Jr Drive is the region's Level I trauma centre. NOTE THAT THE UNITED STATES HAS NO PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE FOR VISITORS and an ambulance alone can cost thousands of dollars, so insurance is essential. THE CLIMATE IS WHAT WILL ACTUALLY AFFECT YOUR TRIP. From June to September the heat index regularly passes 100, which is the point at which sweating stops cooling you properly, so the middle of the day belongs indoors and heat illness is a real risk on the BeltLine or at Stone Mountain. Spring and summer afternoons bring severe thunderstorms with lightning, hail and flash flooding, plus genuine tornado risk: keep weather alerts switched on and treat a warning as an instruction to shelter. And from March to May the pollen is among the heaviest in the country and affects people who have never reacted to anything.

Reading On

Atlanta is the hub of the American South and this library covers the region around it. The Savannah packing list is four hours south east on the coast and the Charleston packing list a little further, both sharing this humidity and both walkable in a way Atlanta is not; the Nashville packing list is four hours north west; and the New Orleans packing list covers the Gulf South. For the mountains at Atlanta's back door, the Asheville packing list and the Great Smoky Mountains packing list are both a few hours north and are where Georgians go to escape the summer. The Washington DC packing list covers the other essential American civil rights itinerary. For the country, the United States travel guide for women carries the transport, the health insurance question and the regions in full. For why wool handles ninety-degree humidity outdoors and hard air conditioning indoors in one shirt, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
