Memphis sits on a bluff above the Mississippi where Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi almost meet, and a disproportionate share of American music was made inside about four square miles of it. Blues came up the river from the Delta, rock and roll was recorded in a small room on Union Avenue, soul was made in a converted cinema on McLemore, and Martin Luther King was killed on a motel balcony here in 1968.

What Is Here
SUN STUDIO IS A SMALL ROOM AND IT IS THE BEST HOUR IN MEMPHIS. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, B B King, Howlin' Wolf and Roy Orbison all recorded in it, and it is a working studio at night and a guided tour by day. YOU STAND IN THE ACTUAL ROOM, which is the whole point and is rarer than it sounds; tours run on the hour and the ticket is cheap. There is a free shuttle linking Sun Studio, Graceland and the Rock and Soul Museum downtown.
THE NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PLACE IN THE CITY AND IT NEEDS SAYING PLAINLY. It is built around the LORRAINE MOTEL, where Dr King was assassinated on 4 April 1968, and room 306 and the balcony are preserved as they were. The museum traces the movement from slavery to the present and is widely held to be the best museum on the subject anywhere. ALLOW THREE HOURS AND EXPECT IT TO BE HARD. It is not a morning to stack with something else.
THE STAX MUSEUM OF AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC IS A RECONSTRUCTION AND THE HONEST VERSION IS BETTER THAN THE MYTH. Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T and the MGs and Sam and Dave recorded at Stax in a converted cinema on McLemore Avenue, and THE ORIGINAL BUILDING WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1989; what stands is a careful rebuilding on the same site, opened in 2003, with the studio floor recreated at its original slope. It is excellent, and knowing it is a reconstruction rather than a survival changes how you read it.
GRACELAND IS BIGGER, STRANGER AND MORE MOVING THAN SCEPTICS EXPECT. Elvis's house is small by modern celebrity standards, preserved as it was in 1977, and the tour is a self-guided iPad audio walk through the mansion, the Jungle Room and the Meditation Garden where he is buried. ACROSS THE STREET IS A LARGE SEPARATE ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX with the cars, the jets and the costumes, and the ticket TIERS ARE CONFUSING AND PRICED WELL APART, so decide in advance whether you want the mansion alone or the whole site. TIMED ENTRY IS REQUIRED AND SELLS OUT in summer and around the August anniversary week.
BEALE STREET IS THE HERO IMAGE AND IT IS A THREE-BLOCK ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT RATHER THAN A HISTORIC ONE. Loud, neon, cheerful, touristy, with live blues in every doorway from the afternoon on, and police at both ends. The music is real and the street is a managed attraction; GO, and understand which one it is. For a listening room rather than a strip, WILD BILL'S and the Green Beetle are what locals name.
THE BARBECUE IS A DISTINCT STYLE AND MEMPHIS WILL ARGUE WITH KANSAS CITY ABOUT IT. Memphis means PORK, specifically ribs, served DRY with a spice rub rather than wet with sauce, plus pulled pork shoulder and, locally, barbecue spaghetti and barbecue nachos. The names are Charles Vergos' Rendezvous in an alley downtown, Central BBQ, Payne's, Cozy Corner and the Bar-B-Q Shop. GO AT LUNCH; the good places sell out.
THE PEABODY DUCKS ARE A GENUINE ABSURDITY WORTH TEN MINUTES. Five mallards march from the lift to the lobby fountain at eleven in the morning and back at five in the afternoon on a red carpet, led by a Duckmaster, and have done since the 1930s. Free, extremely crowded, very silly.
ALSO WORTH IT: the Memphis Rock and Soul Museum, created by the Smithsonian and the best single explanation of why this city produced what it did; OVERTON PARK and the Memphis Zoo in Midtown; the COOPER-YOUNG district for restaurants and record shops; the MISSISSIPPI RIVER PARK and Big River Crossing, the longest pedestrian bridge over the Mississippi, which walks you into Arkansas; and the BASS PRO SHOPS PYRAMID, a former sports arena turned into a shop with a hotel and an observation deck inside it, which is as American as anything in this library.
THE THIRD IMAGE IS THE CITY'S ACTUAL ECONOMY. Memphis is the FedEx global hub, and for most of the last forty years its airport has been among the busiest cargo airports on Earth. The night sky here is full of freighters.
When to Go
APRIL to MAY and SEPTEMBER to EARLY NOVEMBER. Warm, dry-ish, everything open.
MAY IS FESTIVAL MONTH: the Beale Street Music Festival and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest both fall in it, and the city is full.
OCTOBER is the quiet best, with mild days and no crowds.
SUMMER IS HOT AND VERY HUMID, with 90F to 95F afternoons, Delta humidity and evening thunderstorms. The week around 16 AUGUST, the anniversary of Elvis's death, brings ELVIS WEEK and fills Graceland and the hotels.
WINTER IS MILD, GREY AND OCCASIONALLY GLAZED. January hovers in the 40s with cold snaps, and the real hazard is FREEZING RAIN, which the mid-South handles badly because it is rare: an ice storm here closes the city.
Getting There
MEMPHIS INTERNATIONAL, MEM, is about ten miles south, small and easy for passengers, enormous for freight. There is no rail link; it is a fifteen-minute ride or the MATA Route 2 bus.
Amtrak's City of New Orleans calls daily at Central Station, which makes both New Orleans and Chicago reachable by train, overnight in the Chicago direction.
By car, I-40 and I-55 cross here. Nashville is three hours, Little Rock two, St Louis four and a half, New Orleans six, Atlanta six. The MISSISSIPPI DELTA runs south on Highway 61, with Clarksdale ninety minutes away, which is the blues pilgrimage.
You will want a car or a plan of rideshares. Downtown, the river and Beale are walkable, and the MAIN STREET TROLLEY runs restored cars along the central spine. Graceland is nine miles south, Stax three miles out and Midtown is a drive, and Memphis's public transport is thin.
Is Memphis Safe for Women?
The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States and no country-level warning. Its guidance concentrates on the practical differences a British visitor meets: entry requirements and ESTA, the cost of healthcare without insurance, extreme weather including hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts between June and November, and wildfire and heat risk in the west and south-west.
MEMPHIS HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST VIOLENT CRIME RATES OF ANY LARGE AMERICAN CITY AND HAS DONE FOR YEARS, AND A VAGUE ANSWER HERE WOULD BE WORSE THAN A SPECIFIC ONE. That violence is heavily concentrated in particular residential neighbourhoods, is overwhelmingly between people who know each other, and is not aimed at visitors; the murder rate is nonetheless genuinely high, and pretending otherwise would not serve anyone. What follows is the geography, because the geography is the advice.
WHERE VISITORS ACTUALLY GO IS FINE AND BUSY. DOWNTOWN between the river and Danny Thomas, the SOUTH MAIN ARTS DISTRICT, the river parks, BEALE STREET, which is heavily policed, MIDTOWN around Overton Park, COOPER-YOUNG, OVERTON SQUARE and EAST MEMPHIS are all ordinary places to walk by day, and downtown and Cooper-Young are comfortable in the evening. A woman walking any of them alone is unremarkable.
THE OPERATIVE RULES ARE SPECIFIC AND SHORT. THE TRANSITION OUT OF A VISITOR DISTRICT CAN HAPPEN WITHIN TWO OR THREE BLOCKS, particularly going east and north of downtown and in the areas immediately around Stax on McLemore, so drive or ride to Stax rather than walking to it and do not wander out of South Main on foot at night. CAR BREAK-INS AND VEHICLE THEFT ARE THE COMMONEST CRIME AGAINST VISITORS by a wide margin: park in attended or hotel lots, leave absolutely nothing visible, and do not leave a bag in a boot you have just been seen loading. After dark, use rideshare rather than walking between districts, which is what residents do.
MEMPHIS IS THE LARGEST CITY IN THE NEW MADRID SEISMIC ZONE AND NO TRAVEL ADVISORY MENTIONS IT. In the winter of 1811 and 1812 a sequence of earthquakes centred near New Madrid, Missouri, about 130 miles north of here, was among the most powerful ever recorded in North America, rang church bells on the east coast and briefly changed the course of the Mississippi. The zone is still active, small quakes are frequent, and a major one is considered a real long-term risk for this city, whose older building stock was never built for it. NOTHING ABOUT THIS SHOULD CHANGE A TRIP, and it is worth knowing: if the ground moves, DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON, away from windows and masonry, and do not run outside, which is where falling brick lands.
STORM SEASON IS REAL HERE AND HAS TWO PEAKS. The mid-South gets tornadoes, large hail and destructive straight-line winds from March to May and again in late autumn and even winter, and DIXIE ALLEY STORMS ARE MORE OFTEN NOCTURNAL AND RAIN-WRAPPED than the plains variety, which makes them harder to see coming. ENABLE EMERGENCY ALERTS, ask at check-in where the shelter area is, and treat a TORNADO WARNING as an instruction to move now to an interior room on the lowest floor.
THE MISSISSIPPI IS NOT A SWIMMING RIVER, with a powerful current, barge traffic and undertow, and it floods: the 2011 and 2025 floods both reached the downtown riverfront.
SUMMER HEAT AND HUMIDITY produce heat advisories several times a season, and Beale Street and Graceland's grounds offer very little shade. TENNESSEE ALLOWS PERMITLESS CARRY, so lawfully carried handguns are common and prohibition signage is posted on many buildings.
The Memphis Packing List
Humid Delta summers, mild grey winters with occasional ice, two storm seasons, and heavy air conditioning everywhere indoors.
Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women answers the specific rhythm of a Memphis day: 95F and humid on Beale or at Graceland, then three hours in a museum cooled to 70F, then back out into the evening. Fine merino moves sweat off the skin instead of holding it the way cotton does, so you arrive at the Civil Rights Museum dry rather than clammy, and it takes the chill off the galleries without a second garment. From December to February add a heavyweight merino base layer.
A long sun hoodie and a wide brim UPF sun hat for the shadeless parts, which are most of the outdoor ones.
A Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket for both storm seasons and a large insulated water bottle for the summer.
Comfortable walking shoes for long museum floors, cobbles on South Main and the Big River Crossing.
Not linked and worth packing: EMERGENCY ALERTS ENABLED ON YOUR PHONE, which matters more in the mid-South than on the plains because the storms come at night; A LIGHT LAYER FOR INDOORS all summer; SOME CASH, because a few of the best barbecue counters prefer it; AND A TIMED GRACELAND TICKET BOUGHT IN ADVANCE, with the tier decided before you arrive. The US is almost entirely card-based with tipping at 18 to 20 per cent.

Essential Resources for Women in Memphis
Emergency numbers: 911 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile. Calls are answered locally and dispatchers will stay on the line. For non-urgent police matters many cities also run a 311 information line.
MEMPHIS HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST VIOLENT CRIME RATES OF ANY LARGE AMERICAN CITY, concentrated in particular residential neighbourhoods, overwhelmingly between people who know each other and not aimed at visitors, AND THE GEOGRAPHY IS THE ADVICE. Downtown between the river and Danny Thomas, South Main, the river parks, the policed length of Beale Street, Midtown around Overton Park, Cooper-Young, Overton Square and East Memphis are all comfortable. THE TRANSITION OUT OF A VISITOR DISTRICT CAN HAPPEN IN TWO OR THREE BLOCKS, especially east and north of downtown and around Stax on McLemore, so RIDE TO STAX RATHER THAN WALK and do not leave South Main on foot at night. CAR BREAK-INS AND VEHICLE THEFT ARE THE COMMONEST CRIME AGAINST VISITORS: use attended or hotel parking and leave nothing visible. MEMPHIS IS THE LARGEST CITY IN THE NEW MADRID SEISMIC ZONE, where the 1811 to 1812 earthquakes were among the most powerful recorded in North America; the zone is still active and no travel advisory mentions it. DIXIE ALLEY STORMS ARE OFTEN NOCTURNAL AND RAIN-WRAPPED, which makes them harder to see coming, with seasons in March to May and again in late autumn and winter, so ENABLE EMERGENCY ALERTS and know your hotel's shelter area; a TORNADO WARNING means move now to an interior room on the lowest floor. GRACELAND NEEDS TIMED ENTRY, sells out in summer and around ELVIS WEEK in mid-August, and its ticket tiers are priced far apart. THE NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM, built around the Lorraine Motel where Dr King was assassinated in 1968, needs three hours and is hard. THE STAX BUILDING IS A 2003 RECONSTRUCTION; the original was demolished in 1989. SUN STUDIO TOURS RUN ON THE HOUR and a free shuttle links it with Graceland and the Rock and Soul Museum. THE PEABODY DUCKS MARCH AT 11.00 AND 17.00. THE MISSISSIPPI IS NOT A SWIMMING RIVER and it floods the riverfront. Tennessee allows permitless carry.
US State Department travel advisory: there is none, and this is not an omission. The State Department issues travel advisories for other countries, not for the United States itself, so no US advisory for this destination exists to link. In its place, the Government of Canada advice for the United States gives an equivalent third-country assessment.
UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits. The FCDO names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States. The same advice also covers Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Main hospital: Regional One Health on Jefferson Avenue holds the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center, the region's Level I trauma centre, with a 24 hour emergency department, and Methodist University Hospital and Baptist Memorial are the other major ones. Dial 911 for police, ambulance or fire, and note that TORNADO, FLOOD AND ICE STORM WARNINGS come from the National Weather Service forecast office rather than 911, which is for emergencies in progress. This is the single biggest practical difference for a visitor: there is no public health system, an emergency room visit without insurance can run into thousands of dollars, and an ambulance is billed separately and is not free. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is not optional in the United States, and you should carry your policy number and the insurer's 24 hour number somewhere you can reach them. Urgent care clinics handle anything short of an emergency far more cheaply and quickly than an emergency room, and are the right choice for a sprain, an infection or stitches.
Official health authority: the CDC travellers' health pages, the US federal health authority for visitors. covers the US public health guidance, with the National Weather Service the authority for tornado warnings, river flood stages and heat advisories
Embassy contact: the United States is the host country, so there is no US embassy to contact. Your own country's embassy is in Washington DC, with consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Boston. Find yours before you travel and save the number.
Official tourism authority: Brand USA, the national tourism marketing body. covers Memphis and Tennessee visitor information, with Graceland's own site the authority for timed entry, ticket tiers and Elvis Week closures
Takeaways
Sun Studio is one small room, and it is the best hour in the city.
Give the Civil Rights Museum three hours and nothing after it.
Ride to Stax. Do not walk to it.
Ribs are dry here. Go at lunch.
Solo women safety assessment: Memphis is a rewarding city to visit alone and it requires more deliberate route planning than most American cities on this list, which is worth saying straight rather than softening. The city has had one of the highest violent crime rates of any large American city for years. That violence is heavily concentrated in specific residential neighbourhoods, is overwhelmingly between people who know each other and is not directed at visitors, and the useful response is geography rather than anxiety: downtown between the river and Danny Thomas, South Main, the river parks, the policed stretch of Beale, Midtown around Overton Park, Cooper-Young, Overton Square and East Memphis are busy, ordinary places to be a woman on her own, and downtown and Cooper-Young are comfortable in the evening. What a visitor needs to internalise is that the transition out of a visitor district can happen within two or three blocks, particularly going east and north of downtown and around Stax on McLemore, so ride rather than walk to Stax, do not leave South Main on foot after dark, and use rideshare between districts at night, which is what residents do. The crime most likely to touch you is a car break-in or a vehicle theft, so park in attended or hotel lots and leave nothing visible at all. 911 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE, and Regional One Health holds the region's Level I trauma centre. TWO HAZARDS NO ADVISORY CARRIES. Memphis is the largest city in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, where the 1811 and 1812 earthquakes were among the most powerful ever recorded on this continent and which remains active; nothing about that should change a trip, but if the ground moves, drop, cover and hold on rather than running outside. And the mid-South's tornadoes come more often at night and wrapped in rain than the plains variety, so emergency alerts on your phone matter more here, not less.
Reading On
Memphis is one point of a musical triangle the library now covers in full: the Nashville packing list is three hours east and is country music to this city's blues and soul, and the New Orleans packing list is six hours south at the bottom of the same river, where jazz was made. North, the Chicago packing list is where the Delta blues went when it left, reachable on the same overnight train. The Louisville packing list shares the river-city shape and the freight-hub economy, and the Kansas City packing list is the other great American barbecue argument, which is wet and beef to this city's dry and pork. South east, the Atlanta packing list carries the rest of the civil rights story. For the country, the United States travel guide for women carries the transport, the health insurance question and the regions in full. For why wool beats cotton between a humid street and a cooled museum, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
