The city of 2.7 million people on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan has the finest architecture of any American city. The Loop, the downtown core, has more significant buildings by more important architects than any other American downtown. The Chicago School of architecture invented the skyscraper here in the 1880s and 1890s. Louis Sullivan's Carson Pirie Scott building is the finest remaining example of early American commercial architecture. The Rookery Building has Frank Lloyd Wright's interior renovation of the Richardson Romanesque original. The Chicago Tribune Tower has its Gothic crown and the fragments of famous buildings embedded in its base. The Aqua Tower by Jeanne Gang is the most beautiful contemporary skyscraper in America. The Cloud Gate sculpture by Anish Kapoor in Millennium Park is the most loved public sculpture in America, reflecting the Chicago skyline in its polished surface.

The Art Institute of Chicago in its Beaux-Arts building on Michigan Avenue has the finest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings outside of France, including Seurat's Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Grant Wood's American Gothic, and Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Orchestra Hall is one of the five best symphony orchestras in the world. The Second City is the comedy theatre that has produced more major American comedians than any other institution in the country.

Chicago also has the most extreme climate of any major American city. The winters are genuinely severe. The summers are genuinely beautiful. The spring and autumn are brief and extraordinary.

Understanding Chicago's Four Seasons

Winter from December through February: cold with temperatures from minus 15 to minus 5 degrees Celsius and wind chill that can push the effective temperature to minus 25. The wind off Lake Michigan is the defining experience of Chicago winter. Not just cold. Physically demanding cold.

Spring from March through May: brief and beautiful. The lakefront blooms. The outdoor festival season begins. Temperatures from 8 to 18 degrees.

Summer from June through August: warm to hot with temperatures from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius. The lakefront beaches fill. The outdoor music festival season runs at Grant Park and Millennium Park. Chicago summer is one of the finest urban summer experiences in America.

Autumn from September through November: the finest season. Clear blue skies. Temperatures from 8 to 20 degrees. The cultural season fully operational.

The thing the four-season summary hides is how quickly Chicago moves between them. A 20-degree swing inside 48 hours is normal here in both spring and autumn, and the lake amplifies it. Lake Michigan holds its temperature longer than the land, which keeps the shoreline cooler than the inland neighborhoods in spring and warmer in late autumn. The practical version: the lakefront is always several degrees colder and considerably windier than the same afternoon three kilometers inland in Wicker Park.

The Layering System for Chicago

Base Layer

The Roman Trail Women's Merino Wool Base Layer ($49-59) is the most critical item for Chicago in every season. In winter it handles the severe cold and the wind chill of the Lake Michigan shore as a base layer under serious mid and outer layers. In summer it manages the heat and humidity. In the transition seasons it handles the daily temperature swings that Chicago produces more dramatically than any other American city.

Bring two and rotate them. For winter Chicago bring three. At 17.5 micron the fabric sits comfortably against skin under a heavy coat all day, and at 160gsm it still breathes when you come in from minus 15 to a restaurant heated to 22, which is the transition that makes cotton base layers genuinely unpleasant in a Chicago winter.

Mid Layer

Chicago winter is not the time for inadequate mid layers. The Patagonia Women's Down Sweater Jacket ($279) handles serious Chicago winter under a quality outer coat. The Columbia Women's Fast Trek II Jacket ($65) handles Chicago spring, autumn, and the cool summer evenings on the lakefront.

Rain Shell

Chicago rain occurs throughout the year. The Marmot Women's PreCip Eco Rain Jacket ($110) handles Chicago's variable precipitation and provides the wind layer that the Lake Michigan wind demands in every season.

Chicago Winter Packing: Specific Guidance

Chicago winter requires specific preparation that goes beyond standard cold weather packing.

A serious outer coat rated to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Not a fashion coat. Not a down parka designed for New York winters. A coat designed for genuine cold.

A balaclava or serious face covering for the wind chill that can make exposed skin painful within minutes on the lakefront.

Hand warmers for the pocket as backup for gloves that are not sufficient.

Waterproof insulated boots with serious grip for the ice that accumulates on Chicago sidewalks.

The Darn Tough Women's Hiker Micro Crew Merino Socks ($28) under a heavier wool sock for the coldest winter days.

Two further notes that visitors learn the hard way. Mittens beat gloves in a Chicago January, because fingers sharing a compartment stay considerably warmer than fingers separated into individual ones, and the difference is noticeable within ten minutes outdoors. And the Pedway, the network of underground and enclosed walkways connecting much of the Loop, exists precisely because of this weather; learning where its entrances are turns a brutal walk between downtown buildings into an indoor one.

Footwear for Chicago

The Salomon Women's X Ultra 4 GTX ($165) handles Chicago's urban terrain in spring, summer, and autumn. For winter, serious waterproof insulated boots with Vibram or equivalent ice grip are essential. One dressier pair for Chicago's excellent restaurant and theatre scene. Two to three pairs total depending on season.

Chicago is a genuine walking city in the warm months, flat throughout and laid out on a grid that makes distances deceptive. The lakefront path runs 29 kilometers unbroken along Lake Michigan and it is the best thing to do in the city on a good day, so pack shoes you would happily spend six hours in.

Seasonal Clothing Lists

Winter Chicago

Two merino base layers. Two thermal long sleeve tops. Two quality casual tops. One quality winter evening outfit. Serious down jacket. Quality heavy outer coat. Balaclava. Serious warm hat. Wool or down mittens. Neck gaiter. Waterproof insulated boots with ice grip. Waterproof city shoes for less severe days. Four to five merino socks plus heavier wool socks for severe days.

Summer Chicago

Two merino base layers. Two casual tops. One casual dress. Light cardigan for air conditioning and cool lakefront evenings. Compact rain shell. Comfortable city shoes. Sandals. Three merino socks.

Spring and Autumn Chicago

Two merino base layers. Two quality casual tops. One quality evening outfit. Fleece or down mid layer. Compact rain shell. Waterproof city shoes. Dressier shoes for evening. Three merino socks.

What Not to Bring to Chicago

Leave the umbrella. Chicago's nickname is not literally about wind, but the gusts funnelling between Loop skyscrapers and coming off the lake destroy umbrellas with real efficiency. A hooded shell is the correct answer.

Leave the fashion winter coat if you are visiting between December and February. A coat that looks the part but is rated for a mild climate is the single most common packing mistake in Chicago, and there is no way to compensate for it once you are standing on Michigan Avenue in a lake wind.

Leave the heels for anything other than a taxi-to-door evening. Chicago sidewalks are salted, gritted, and icy for four months of the year, and uneven in the older neighborhoods for the other eight.

Chicago by Neighborhood

The Loop, the downtown core, has the architecture, the Art Institute, Millennium Park, and Grant Park on the lakefront. The Chicago Architecture Center river tour is the finest introduction to the city's architectural heritage.

Wicker Park and Bucktown northwest of downtown have the most independent retail, the best vintage shopping, the finest brunch culture, and the neighborhood atmosphere that defines contemporary Chicago cool.

River North north of the Loop has the most concentrated gallery district in the Midwest and the restaurant row along Clark and Wells Streets.

Lincoln Park north of River North has the free Lincoln Park Zoo, the lakefront running and cycling paths, and the finest residential neighborhood walking in Chicago.

Hyde Park on the South Side has the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry in the former 1893 World's Fair building, and Barack Obama's former home neighborhood.

Chicago Packing FAQ

Is Chicago safe for solo women travelers?
Chicago requires neighborhood awareness. The Loop, River North, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, and the lakefront are comfortable and well-traveled areas for solo women. Certain South and West Side neighborhoods have higher crime rates and are not tourist destinations. Research specific neighborhoods before visiting.

What is the best time to visit Chicago?
September and October for the finest weather, the cultural season in full operation, and the city at its most beautiful. June through August for the lakefront summer culture and the outdoor festival season. Avoid January and February unless you specifically want to experience a genuine American winter.

How cold does it actually get, and can I still enjoy a winter trip?
January highs average around minus 2 degrees Celsius and lows around minus 9, with wind chill regularly making it feel like minus 20 to minus 25 on the lakefront. A winter trip works well if the itinerary is built around indoor Chicago, which is world class: the Art Institute, the Symphony, Second City, the Field Museum, and the Pedway between them. It does not work if you planned to walk the lakefront path.

What food should I try in Chicago?
Deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati's or Pequod's is the most famous Chicago food and genuinely extraordinary when understood as a casserole rather than pizza. The Chicago-style hot dog with yellow mustard, neon relish, tomato, onion, pickle, sport pepper, and celery salt on a poppy seed bun with absolutely no ketchup. The Italian beef sandwich from Al's Beef dipped in jus. The tasting menu at Alinea, which has been one of the finest restaurants in the world for two decades.
