Kailua is a town of about 40,000 on the windward side of Oahu, twenty-five minutes over the mountains from Honolulu, with a long white beach, a pair of islands offshore and a ridge walk that gives the most photographed view in the state after Waikiki.
FIRST, BECAUSE IT CATCHES PEOPLE OUT: THIS IS NOT KAILUA-KONA. There are two Kailuas in Hawaii on two different islands. This one is on OAHU, on the windward coast, near Honolulu. KAILUA-KONA is on the BIG ISLAND, on the dry leeward coast, roughly 250 kilometres of open ocean away and a separate flight. They are different towns with different weather, different reasons to go and different packing lists, and airlines, hotels and map apps all shorten both to "Kailua". If you booked a flight to Kona and are reading this, you want the Kailua-Kona packing list instead.

What Is Here
THE LANIKAI PILLBOX HIKE IS THE HERO IMAGE AND IT IS SHORT, STEEP AND CROWDED. Properly the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, about three kilometres return, climbing a few hundred feet on loose red dirt and rock to two Second World War observation bunkers with the Mokulua islands below. IT IS NOT A BEGINNER WALK despite its length: the first section is steep and eroded, slippery in the wet, and people are injured on it regularly. GO AT FIRST LIGHT, both for the sunrise it is famous for and because the trailhead parking is residential and fills immediately.
PARKING IS THE REAL PLANNING PROBLEM AND LANIKAI IS A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOOD, NOT A RESORT. Lanikai Beach has NO CAR PARK, no facilities, no lifeguard, and the surrounding streets are narrow with extensive parking restrictions that are actively enforced and towed. The practical answer is to park at KAILUA BEACH PARK, which has a proper car park, lifeguards and toilets, and walk or cycle the fifteen minutes round to Lanikai. DO NOT PARK ACROSS A DRIVEWAY OR ON A RESTRICTED STRETCH: this is somebody's street.
AND THE TOWN HAS DELIBERATELY LIMITED COMMERCIAL TOURISM, WHICH YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BOOKING. Honolulu's city and county rules restrict commercial activity on Kailua and Lanikai beaches and have limited tour buses into the neighbourhood, after years of local pressure about volume. There is no resort strip here and there are few hotels: accommodation is largely holiday rentals, themselves regulated. The consequence for a visitor is that this is a day trip or a quiet stay rather than a resort week, and the right attitude is that of a guest in a residential town.
KAILUA BEACH IS ABOUT FIVE KILOMETRES OF SAND AND IT IS GENUINELY ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY. The third image is sunrise over it. Turquoise water, a shallow sandy entry, and trade winds that make it the best place on Oahu for kiteboarding and windsurfing. LANIKAI, just round the point, is calmer and shallower and is the postcard, with the two Mokulua islands offshore.
THE MOKULUA ISLANDS ARE A SEABIRD SANCTUARY. Kayaking across is a classic half-day and LANDING IS PERMITTED ONLY ON THE SEAWARD BEACH OF THE LARGER ISLAND, Moku Nui; the smaller one is closed entirely and the interiors are closed to protect nesting birds. Go with an operator or know the rules.
THE WINDWARD SIDE IS GREENER AND WETTER THAN WAIKIKI, because the Koolau mountains wring the moisture out of the trade winds here. Expect passing showers most days and a landscape that justifies them. The Maunawili Falls and Lanikai Pillbox trails are both muddy for most of the year.
HONOLULU IS TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES OVER THE PALI and the Nuuanu Pali Lookout on the way is worth the stop for the wind alone.
When to Go
April to June and September to early November. Drier, less crowded, and the trade winds reliable.
Summer is hot, busy and the calmest water on this coast.
December to March is the wet season, with heavier showers, bigger surf on the exposed stretches and the trails at their muddiest. It is still warm.
KONA WINDS ARE THE ONES TO WATCH, AND THEY ARE THE EXCEPTION THAT RUINS A WINDWARD DAY. When the usual north-easterly trades drop and the wind swings round from the south west, the windward side turns humid, still and muggy, and the water can go murky. It is uncommon and it does happen, mostly in winter.
Getting There
By road from Honolulu or the airport, 25 to 40 minutes over the Pali or Likelike highways.
By bus, TheBus routes reach Kailua town from Honolulu and are cheap, slow and perfectly usable, which is unusual for Hawaii. From Kailua town to Lanikai is then a walk, a cycle or a short local bus.
You can do Kailua without a car and it is arguably better. Bus in, hire a bicycle in town, and you sidestep the entire parking problem that defines most visits here. If you do drive, use Kailua Beach Park.
Is Kailua Safe for Women?
The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States and no country-level warning. Its guidance concentrates on the practical differences a British visitor meets: entry requirements and ESTA, the cost of healthcare without insurance, extreme weather including hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts between June and November, and wildfire and heat risk in the west and south-west.
Kailua is a prosperous, residential, very safe town and is comfortable for a woman alone. The crime that affects visitors is theft from parked cars at beach parks and trailheads, which is the Hawaii constant. LEAVE NOTHING IN A HIRE CAR.
DROWNING IS AMONG THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH FOR VISITORS TO HAWAII AND LANIKAI HAS NO LIFEGUARD. That is the single most important sentence here: the prettiest beach on this coast is unsupervised, and Kailua Beach Park, five minutes away, is lifeguarded. SWIM AT KAILUA BEACH PARK. Trade winds also create a current running along the beach and out past the point, and conditions that look flat can carry you.
THE PILLBOX TRAIL INJURES PEOPLE REGULARLY. Steep, eroded red dirt, loose rock, no railings at the top and a real drop on the seaward side, and it is treacherous when wet. Proper shoes, not sandals, and turn back if it has rained.
PORTUGUESE MAN O' WAR AND BOX JELLYFISH arrive on windward beaches on strong onshore winds, often in the days after a full moon for box jellyfish. Watch for warning signs and do not touch anything blue on the sand.
THE SUN HERE IS EXTREME BY MID-MORNING. The UV index routinely reaches 11 or above. The trade winds make it feel mild, which is exactly how people burn badly.
FLASH FLOODING in the Koolau valleys and brown-water advisories after heavy rain, when runoff makes the sea genuinely unsafe to enter for a day or two. HEED A BROWN WATER ADVISORY.
The Kailua Packing List
Strong sun, constant wind, passing showers, warm water and red mud.
Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is a better choice on a windward Hawaiian coast than it sounds: the trade winds mean you are cool while the UV is extreme, so covered arms are the comfortable option rather than the hot one, and fine wool handles being rained on and then dried by wind repeatedly without going stale.
A Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket, packable, for the passing showers that arrive most days on this side of the island.
A long sun hoodie and a wide brim sun hat with a chin strap, because the wind will take a hat straight off the ridge.
Walking shoes with grip for the pillbox trail, which is where sandals cause the injuries, and a dry bag for the kayak to the Mokuluas.
Not linked and worth packing: MINERAL SUNSCREEN, because HAWAII HAS BANNED THE SALE OF SUNSCREENS CONTAINING OXYBENZONE AND OCTINOXATE and "reef safe" is not a regulated term, so read for non-nanoparticle zinc oxide; A SWIMSUIT AND A QUICK-DRYING TOWEL; SUNGLASSES THAT STAY ON IN WIND; VINEGAR OR AT LEAST THE KNOWLEDGE THAT LIFEGUARDS CARRY IT for a man o' war sting; AND A PLAN FOR PARKING, which here is a packing item in all but name. The US is almost entirely card-based and tipping is expected at 18 to 20 per cent.
Recommended Tours and Experiences
Essential Resources for Women in Kailua
Emergency numbers: 911 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile. Calls are answered locally and dispatchers will stay on the line. For non-urgent police matters many cities also run a 311 information line.
THIS IS KAILUA ON OAHU AND NOT KAILUA-KONA ON THE BIG ISLAND, which is a separate town on a separate island reached by a separate flight. LANIKAI BEACH HAS NO LIFEGUARD, NO CAR PARK AND NO FACILITIES, and the surrounding residential streets carry enforced parking restrictions with towing: PARK AT KAILUA BEACH PARK, which has a car park, toilets and LIFEGUARDS, and walk or cycle the fifteen minutes to Lanikai. DROWNING IS AMONG THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH FOR VISITORS TO HAWAII, so swim at the lifeguarded beach rather than the prettier unsupervised one, and note that trade winds set a current running along the beach and out past the point even when the water looks flat. HEED BROWN WATER ADVISORIES after heavy rain, when runoff makes the sea unsafe for a day or two. THE LANIKAI PILLBOX TRAIL, properly Kaiwa Ridge, is about 3km return on steep eroded red dirt with loose rock, no railings at the top and a real seaward drop: it injures people regularly, it is treacherous wet, and it needs shoes rather than sandals. PORTUGUESE MAN O' WAR AND BOX JELLYFISH reach windward beaches on onshore winds, box jellyfish often in the days after a full moon. THE UV INDEX ROUTINELY REACHES 11 OR ABOVE and the trade winds disguise it. THE MOKULUA ISLANDS ARE A SEABIRD SANCTUARY: landing is allowed only on the seaward beach of Moku Nui and the interiors and the smaller island are closed. COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY ON THESE BEACHES AND TOUR BUSES INTO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ARE RESTRICTED by the city and county, so this is a residential town rather than a resort. HAWAII BANS THE SALE OF OXYBENZONE AND OCTINOXATE SUNSCREENS. TheBus reaches Kailua from Honolulu cheaply.
US State Department travel advisory: there is none, and this is not an omission. The State Department issues travel advisories for other countries, not for the United States itself, so no US advisory for this destination exists to link. In its place, the Government of Canada advice for the United States gives an equivalent third-country assessment.
UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits. The FCDO names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States. The same advice also covers Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Main hospital: Adventist Health Castle on Ulukahiki Street in Kailua has a 24 hour emergency department in the town itself, which is unusual for a place this size and is the practical reason the windward side is easier than Kauai's north shore. For major trauma the state's centre is The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, about 30 minutes over the Pali. Dial 911 for police, ambulance or fire, and note that AN OCEAN RESCUE goes through 911 to the Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards and the Coast Guard. This is the single biggest practical difference for a visitor: there is no public health system, an emergency room visit without insurance can run into thousands of dollars, and an ambulance is billed separately and is not free. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is not optional in the United States, and you should carry your policy number and the insurer's 24 hour number somewhere you can reach them. Urgent care clinics handle anything short of an emergency far more cheaply and quickly than an emergency room, and are the right choice for a sprain, an infection or stitches.
Official health authority: the CDC travellers' health pages, the US federal health authority for visitors. covers the US public health guidance, with the National Weather Service the authority for high surf and flash flood warnings and the state health department for brown water advisories
Embassy contact: the United States is the host country, so there is no US embassy to contact. Your own country's embassy is in Washington DC, with consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Boston. Find yours before you travel and save the number.
Official tourism authority: Brand USA, the national tourism marketing body. covers Hawaii and Oahu visitor information, with Honolulu Ocean Safety the authority for beach conditions and the city and county the authority for the Lanikai parking restrictions
Takeaways
This is Oahu. Kailua-Kona is a different island.
Park at Kailua Beach Park. Lanikai has no car park and tows.
Swim where the lifeguard is. Lanikai has none.
Shoes for the pillbox trail, not sandals. It is steep and eroded.
Solo women safety assessment: Kailua is one of the most comfortable places in Hawaii to travel alone. It is a prosperous residential town of about 40,000 with a proper high street, a cheap and usable bus to Honolulu, and an emergency department in the town itself at Adventist Health Castle, which is unusual for somewhere this size. Crime against visitors is essentially theft from parked hire cars at beach parks and trailheads, so take everything with you. 911 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE free from any phone, an ocean rescue goes through 911 to Honolulu Ocean Safety and the Coast Guard, and the state trauma centre is The Queen's Medical Center thirty minutes away in Honolulu. THE UNITED STATES HAS NO PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE FOR VISITORS and insurance is essential. THE ONE THING THAT GENUINELY ENDANGERS VISITORS HERE IS THE WATER, AND THE TRAP IS THAT THE PRETTIEST BEACH IS THE UNSUPERVISED ONE. Lanikai has no lifeguard, no car park and no facilities, while Kailua Beach Park five minutes away has all three, and since drowning is among the leading causes of death for tourists in Hawaii that difference is the whole of the advice: swim at the lifeguarded beach. Trade winds set a current running the length of the sand and out past the point even when the surface looks flat, man o' war and box jellyfish arrive on onshore winds, and after heavy rain a brown water advisory means the sea is genuinely unsafe for a day or two rather than merely murky. On land, the Lanikai pillbox trail is short enough that people attempt it in flip-flops and steep and eroded enough that it hurts them for it. And the practical risk to your day rather than your safety is parking: Lanikai is somebody's residential street, the restrictions are enforced and cars are towed.
Reading On
Kailua is on Oahu's windward side, and the Honolulu packing list covers the island's city twenty-five minutes over the Pali, which is where almost every visitor arrives and stays. The Kailua-Kona packing list is the other Kailua, on the Big Island, and is included here because the two are so often confused rather than because they are a pair. Elsewhere in the state, the Kauai packing list and the Hanalei packing list cover the oldest and wettest island, the Maui packing list covers Maui and the Big Island packing list the volcanoes, with the Hawaii packing list covering the state as a whole. On the mainland, the San Francisco packing list and the Los Angeles packing list are the usual gateways. For the country, the United States travel guide for women carries the transport, the health insurance question and the regions in full. For why covered arms are cooler than bare ones in a trade wind under an extreme UV index, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
