Packing List for Hanalei, Hawaii: What Women Should Bring

Picturesque view of Hanalei Pier with mountains and sunset in Kauai, Hawaii.

Hanalei is a town of fewer than a thousand people on the north shore of Kauai, in a valley of taro fields under mountains that are among the wettest places on earth. It has a two-mile crescent bay, a wooden pier, one main road, and a position at the end of that road which shapes everything about visiting it.

What Is Here

THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO ARRANGE BEFORE YOU ARRIVE: HAENA STATE PARK AND THE KALALAU TRAILHEAD REQUIRE ADVANCE RESERVATIONS. Ke'e Beach, the start of the Napali Coast and the Kalalau Trail all sit inside Haena State Park at the very end of the road past Hanalei, and since the park reopened after the 2018 flood ACCESS IS CAPPED AND BOOKED IN ADVANCE: an entry and parking reservation, or a shuttle reservation, released on a rolling window and routinely gone. THERE IS NO TURNING UP. A separate camping permit is required for the Kalalau Trail beyond the first two miles. Book this before your flights if the Napali Coast is why you are coming, and check the state parks site for the current system, because it has changed more than once.

THE ROAD IS A SINGLE-LANE-BRIDGE ROAD AND THAT IS WHY HANALEI IS STILL HANALEI. The Hanalei Bridge, a one-lane steel truss from 1912, carries a weight limit that keeps large trucks and coaches out of the north shore entirely. The etiquette is local and firm: SEVEN OR EIGHT CARS GO, THEN YOU YIELD. There are several more one-lane bridges past the town. IN APRIL 2018 the north shore took extraordinary rainfall, over 1,200 millimetres in 24 hours at Waipa, and the landslides closed the road beyond Hanalei TO ALL BUT RESIDENTS FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. It can close again, and it does close for shorter periods. CHECK THE ROAD BEFORE YOU DRIVE PAST TOWN.

Lush green landscapes and terraced fields in Hanalei Valley, Hawaii under a blue sky.

THE SECOND IMAGE IS THE TARO, AND IT IS A WORKING AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE RATHER THAN SCENERY. Hanalei Valley grows a large share of Hawaii's taro, kalo, in fields that have been farmed for centuries, and the valley is also the HANALEI NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, protecting endangered Hawaiian waterbirds. The fields are PRIVATE AND THE REFUGE IS LARGELY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC: the view is from the overlook on the highway above the bridge, and walking into the fields is both trespassing and a problem for the birds.

HANALEI BAY IS TWO MILES OF SAND AND THE SEASON DECIDES WHAT IT IS. The third image is the bay in summer, which is when it is calm, swimmable and the pier is the best place on the island to spend an afternoon. IN WINTER THE SAME BAY TAKES NORTH PACIFIC SWELL and becomes a serious surf break with powerful shorebreak and rip currents. That is not a caveat, it is two different places six months apart.

IT RAINS, AND THE FIGURES ARE NOT NORMAL. Mount Waialeale behind the valley receives roughly 9,000 to 11,000 millimetres a year and is routinely listed among the wettest spots on the planet. Hanalei itself gets a great deal less than the summit and still far more than anywhere most visitors have been. WINTER IS THE WET SEASON and a week of rain is an ordinary outcome in January.

THE TOWN IS SMALL AND DELIBERATELY SO. A former schoolhouse holding shops, a handful of restaurants, a farmers market, and almost no chain anything. There is no resort strip here, which is the point.

QUEEN'S BATH IS NEARBY AND HAS KILLED PEOPLE. It is a lava shelf pool at Princeville, and the trail down to it carries a sign with a running count of deaths. IT IS SAFE ONLY IN FLAT SUMMER CONDITIONS AND LETHAL IN WINTER, when waves sweep the shelf without warning. Treat it as closed between October and May.

When to Go

May to September is the dry season and the swimming season, with the bay calm, the road most reliable and the Napali Coast boat trips running. This is the right window for a first visit.

September and early October are the quietest good weather.

December to March is the wet season and the big-surf season. Rain for days, the bay unswimmable, Queen's Bath deadly, boat trips cancelled, and the road at its most likely to close. The surf itself is spectacular to watch.

Book Haena State Park and your accommodation months ahead in any season. The north shore has very few beds by design.

Getting There

By air to Lihue on Kauai, then about an hour and fifteen minutes north by road.

YOU NEED A HIRE CAR AND YOU SHOULD BOOK IT EARLY. Kauai's bus does not serve the north shore usefully, there is no ride-hailing to speak of out here, and hire cars on the island sell out in peak season. BUT NOTE THE CONTRADICTION: Haena State Park's parking is reserved and capped, so the car gets you to Hanalei and the shuttle gets you to the end of the road.

There are no flights, ferries or coaches into the north shore itself. One road in, one road out.

Is Hanalei Safe for Women?

The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States and no country-level warning. Its guidance concentrates on the practical differences a British visitor meets: entry requirements and ESTA, the cost of healthcare without insurance, extreme weather including hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts between June and November, and wildfire and heat risk in the west and south-west.

Hanalei is a small, tight-knit community and is very safe for a woman travelling alone. The crime that affects visitors is theft from parked cars at trailheads and beach car parks, which on Kauai is common enough that locals leave their cars unlocked and empty. LEAVE NOTHING IN A HIRE CAR, not in the boot, not hidden.

THE OCEAN IS THE REAL DANGER AND HAWAII'S DROWNING STATISTICS ARE DRIVEN BY VISITORS. Drowning is among the leading causes of death for tourists in Hawaii, and the north shore of Kauai in winter is one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the state. RIP CURRENTS, SHOREBREAK AND SUDDEN LARGE SETS are the mechanisms. SWIM WHERE THERE IS A LIFEGUARD, which on this coast means Hanalei Pavilion and Haena in season, and ask the lifeguard rather than guessing. IF IN DOUBT, DON'T GO OUT is the state's own slogan and it is meant literally.

NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE SEA ON A LAVA SHELF OR A ROCK LEDGE. That is how Queen's Bath kills people, and the same applies anywhere along this coast.

FLASH FLOODING IS A GENUINE RISK IN THE VALLEYS AND STREAM CROSSINGS. Rain falls on mountains you cannot see from the trail. Never cross a rising stream, and the Kalalau Trail's Hanakapiai Stream has drowned people who tried.

THE KALALAU TRAIL IS SERIOUS AND IS NOT A WALK. Even the two miles to Hanakapiai Beach is a muddy, exposed, root-and-rock scramble, and HANAKAPIAI BEACH HAS NO SAFE SWIMMING AT ANY TIME OF YEAR, with a sign counting the dead.

Mud is the universal condition. Red Kauai mud stains permanently and makes every trail slippery.

Mosquitoes and centipedes are present; centipedes here are large and their bite is genuinely painful.

The Hanalei Packing List

Heavy rain, warm humid air, mud, strong sun and cold water in winter.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is a better tropical layer than people expect for a reason specific to this coast: you will be wet, from rain or sea or both, for much of the day, and fine wool keeps working damp, does not hold smell over repeated soakings, and dries on you rather than clinging. It is also the best sun cover there is.

A Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket, packable and genuinely necessary rather than optional. This is one of the wettest inhabited places in the United States.

A long sun hoodie and a wide brim sun hat. At this latitude the UV index reaches extreme by mid-morning and the bay has almost no shade.

Walking shoes with grip that you accept will be ruined by red mud, and a dry bag for a boat trip, a kayak or simply walking into town in a downpour.

Not linked and worth packing: REEF-CONSCIOUS SUNSCREEN, and note that HAWAII HAS BANNED THE SALE OF SUNSCREENS CONTAINING OXYBENZONE AND OCTINOXATE, so bring mineral sunscreen or buy locally; "reef safe" is not a regulated term anywhere, so read for non-nanoparticle zinc oxide. Also: YOUR HAENA STATE PARK RESERVATION; A SWIMSUIT AND A QUICK-DRYING TOWEL; INSECT REPELLENT; A TORCH; AND CLOTHES YOU DO NOT MIND STAINING RED. The US is almost entirely card-based and tipping is expected at 18 to 20 per cent.

Essential Resources for Women in Hanalei

Emergency numbers: 911 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile. Calls are answered locally and dispatchers will stay on the line. For non-urgent police matters many cities also run a 311 information line.

BOOK HAENA STATE PARK BEFORE YOU BOOK ANYTHING ELSE. Ke'e Beach, the Napali Coast and the Kalalau trailhead all sit inside it at the end of the road, access has been CAPPED AND RESERVED since the park reopened after the 2018 flood, entry-and-parking or shuttle reservations are released on a rolling window and routinely sell out, and THERE IS NO TURNING UP. A separate camping permit is needed beyond the first two miles of the Kalalau Trail. THE ROAD PAST HANALEI CROSSES SEVERAL ONE-LANE BRIDGES with local yield etiquette, and IN APRIL 2018 over 1,200mm of rain in 24 hours closed it to all but residents FOR MORE THAN A YEAR: check the road before driving past town. DROWNING IS AMONG THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH FOR VISITORS TO HAWAII and this coast in winter is among the most dangerous water in the state, through rip currents, shorebreak and sudden large sets: SWIM ONLY WHERE A LIFEGUARD IS POSTED, which here means Hanalei Pavilion and Haena in season, and ASK the lifeguard. QUEEN'S BATH AT PRINCEVILLE HAS A SIGN COUNTING ITS DEAD and should be treated as closed from October to May. NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE SEA ON A LAVA SHELF. HANAKAPIAI BEACH HAS NO SAFE SWIMMING IN ANY SEASON. FLASH FLOODING fills stream crossings from rain on mountains you cannot see, so never cross a rising stream. HAWAII HAS BANNED THE SALE OF OXYBENZONE AND OCTINOXATE SUNSCREENS. The Hanalei Valley taro fields are private and the wildlife refuge is largely closed: view from the highway overlook. Theft from parked cars at trailheads is the commonest crime.

US State Department travel advisory: there is none, and this is not an omission. The State Department issues travel advisories for other countries, not for the United States itself, so no US advisory for this destination exists to link. In its place, the Government of Canada advice for the United States gives an equivalent third-country assessment.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits. The FCDO names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States. The same advice also covers Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Main hospital: there is no hospital on the north shore. The nearest emergency department is Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue, about an hour and fifteen minutes away, which is Kauai's main hospital; Kauai Veterans Memorial is on the west side. Dial 911 for police, ambulance or fire, and note that AN OCEAN RESCUE goes through 911 to the county lifeguards and the Coast Guard, which is the right call from a beach. A clinic operates in Kilauea and there is a small facility in Princeville. This is the single biggest practical difference for a visitor: there is no public health system, an emergency room visit without insurance can run into thousands of dollars, and an ambulance is billed separately and is not free. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is not optional in the United States, and you should carry your policy number and the insurer's 24 hour number somewhere you can reach them. Urgent care clinics handle anything short of an emergency far more cheaply and quickly than an emergency room, and are the right choice for a sprain, an infection or stitches.

Official health authority: the CDC travellers' health pages, the US federal health authority for visitors. covers the US public health guidance, with the National Weather Service the authority for high surf advisories and flash flood warnings

Embassy contact: the United States is the host country, so there is no US embassy to contact. Your own country's embassy is in Washington DC, with consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Boston. Find yours before you travel and save the number.

Official tourism authority: Brand USA, the national tourism marketing body. covers Hawaii and Kauai visitor information, with Hawaii State Parks the authority for the Haena State Park reservation system and the Kalalau Trail permits

Takeaways

Book Haena State Park before your flights. There is no turning up.

Check the road past Hanalei. It has closed for over a year before.

Swim only where a lifeguard is posted, and ask them first.

Treat Queen's Bath as closed from October to May.

Solo women safety assessment: Hanalei is a very easy and welcoming place to be alone. It is a town of under a thousand people where the shops are in an old schoolhouse, people say hello, and a woman eating alone or walking the bay at dusk is entirely ordinary. The crime that touches visitors is theft from parked hire cars at trailheads and beach lots, which is common enough on Kauai that locals leave their own cars unlocked and empty, so take everything with you and leave nothing in the boot. 911 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE free from any phone, and an ocean rescue goes through 911 to the county lifeguards and the Coast Guard. THERE IS NO HOSPITAL ON THE NORTH SHORE: the nearest emergency department is Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue, an hour and a quarter away, with a clinic at Kilauea. THE UNITED STATES HAS NO PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE FOR VISITORS and insurance is essential. THE DANGER HERE IS THE WATER AND IT IS NOT A THEORETICAL ONE: drowning is among the leading causes of death for tourists in Hawaii, and Kauai's north shore in winter is among the most dangerous water in the state, because the same two-mile bay that is a calm swimming beach in July takes North Pacific swell in January with heavy shorebreak and rip currents. The rule that actually protects you is simple and local: swim where a lifeguard is posted, which on this coast means Hanalei Pavilion and Haena in season, and ask that lifeguard about the day rather than reading the surface yourself. Never turn your back on the sea on a lava shelf, which is precisely how Queen's Bath at Princeville kills people, and treat it as closed between October and May. Inland, flash floods fill stream crossings from rain falling on mountains you cannot see from the trail, so never cross a rising stream, and the Kalalau Trail is a muddy exposed scramble rather than a walk.

Reading On

Hanalei is one town on one island and the Kauai packing list is its parent, covering the island as a whole, the Waimea Canyon and south shore side, and the transport; read that for the island and this for the north shore, the reservation system and the winter water. Across the archipelago, the Honolulu packing list covers Oahu's city and the Kailua packing list its windward side, the Maui packing list covers Maui, and the Big Island packing list the volcanoes, with the Kailua-Kona packing list covering its leeward town. The Hawaii packing list covers the state as a whole. On the mainland, the San Francisco packing list and the Seattle packing list are the usual gateways. For the country, the United States travel guide for women carries the transport, the health insurance question and the regions in full. For why wool is the right layer when you are wet all day in warm air, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
