Packing List for Steamboat Springs, Colorado: What Women Should Bring

Sunset over the ranch country outside Steamboat Springs, a dirt road winding through autumn grass in the Yampa valley.

Steamboat Springs is a town of about 13,000 people in the Yampa valley of north west Colorado, at roughly 2,050 metres, and it is the rare Colorado ski town that was a working place first and is still a working place now. Cattle ranching came before the lifts and has not stopped, which is why the valley in the first photograph looks like agricultural country rather than a resort approach. THE NAME COMMEMORATES A SOUND THAT NO LONGER EXISTS. French trappers moving through in the early nineteenth century heard a rhythmic chugging from a spring beside the river and took it for a steamboat coming upstream. THE RAILWAY ARRIVED IN 1908, BLASTING THROUGH THE ROCK, AND THE SPRING STOPPED MAKING THE NOISE. The town is named after something that the thing which brought its visitors destroyed, and you can still visit the spring, which is now quiet.

What Is Here

THE SNOW HAS A TRADEMARK AND THE CLAIM BEHIND IT IS REAL. CHAMPAGNE POWDER is a registered trademark of the ski resort, not a figure of speech, and it describes a genuine local effect: storms crossing the high desert to the west arrive dry, so the snow that falls here carries unusually little water and does not pack. SKI TOWN USA is also a registered trademark of the town. The Olympic claim is likewise verifiable rather than promotional: MORE WINTER OLYMPIANS HAVE COME FROM STEAMBOAT SPRINGS THAN FROM ANY OTHER TOWN IN NORTH AMERICA, around a hundred of them from a population of thirteen thousand, which is a ratio no other place approaches.

HOWELSEN HILL IS THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING SKI AREA IN COLORADO, running since 1915, and it sits in the town rather than above it, with floodlights and a ski jump complex. That is where the Olympians come from. The big resort is on the other side of the valley on Mount Werner, with a summit above 3,200 metres, which matters for the altitude section below: THE TOWN IS AT A MODERATE HEIGHT AND THE SKIING IS NOT.

A walker crossing snow among frosted trees near Steamboat Springs in winter, the season the town is built around.

THE HOT SPRINGS ARE THE OTHER REASON TO COME AND ONE OF THEM HAS A RULE YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU ARRIVE. STRAWBERRY PARK HOT SPRINGS is the beautiful one, stone-walled pools terraced into a creek bed in the forest seven miles out of town, and IT IS CLOTHING-OPTIONAL AFTER DARK. That is stated here plainly because arriving without knowing is what spoils the evening, not any danger, and it is a policy rather than an accident. It is also cash only, takes no children after dark, and ITS ACCESS ROAD REQUIRES FOUR WHEEL DRIVE OR CHAINS IN WINTER, which is why the operator runs a shuttle from town. OLD TOWN HOT SPRINGS, in the middle of Steamboat, is the swimsuit alternative: a proper municipal facility with lap lanes, slides and a gym, open year round, and entirely suitable if the other does not appeal.

FISH CREEK FALLS IS A SHORT WALK FOR AN OUTSIZED RETURN, a 280 foot drop about four miles from town reached by a quarter-mile path to the footbridge, with a steeper trail continuing to the upper falls. In winter it freezes and is climbed.

THE YAMPA RIVER RUNS THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF TOWN AND IN SUMMER PEOPLE FLOAT IT. Tubing the Yampa is the defining Steamboat summer afternoon, and the thing to know is that IT CLOSES. The city shuts commercial and recreational tubing when flows drop or water temperatures rise, to protect the trout fishery, and that happens in a dry August more often than not. CHECK BEFORE YOU PLAN A DAY AROUND IT rather than arriving with an inflatable.

AND WHAT THIS LIBRARY CANNOT SHOW YOU IS WORTH SAYING OUTRIGHT. The three photographs here are the valley, a winter walk and an autumn creek, and they are honest pictures of the country around the town. THE SKI RESORT, THE HOT SPRINGS, FISH CREEK FALLS AND LINCOLN AVENUE ARE ABSENT FROM OUR SET ENTIRELY. Steamboat's main street is a real western main street with a saddlery and a tack shop still on it, and we hold no frame of it, so do not take three landscapes as the whole of the place.

When to Go

The ski season runs roughly late November to early April and February is the deepest month. Expect daytime temperatures from minus ten to minus one in midwinter and nights well below that, with the valley holding cold air so the town is often colder than the mountain.

JULY AND AUGUST ARE THE SECOND SEASON and are genuinely good: high teens to mid twenties, wildflowers, the river, and a rodeo series through the summer. THIS IS ALSO MONSOON SEASON IN COLORADO, with afternoon thunderstorms building most days, which matters more than the rain itself for the reason in the safety section.

SEPTEMBER AND EARLY OCTOBER give the aspens in the third photograph and the clearest air of the year, with cold nights and comfortable days, and they are the quietest and cheapest weeks.

LATE APRIL TO MID JUNE IS MUD SEASON and much of the town closes. It is cheap and there is not much to do.

Getting There

Denver is about 157 miles and three hours, and the road is the thing to plan around. The route runs up Interstate 70 then over US 40 across RABBIT EARS PASS at about 2,870 metres, and in a storm that pass closes or goes to traction and chain restrictions with no warning. CDOT'S COTRIP SERVICE is the authority that decides and publishes it, and checking it is not optional in winter: there is no alternative route that is not hours longer.

YAMPA VALLEY REGIONAL AIRPORT AT HAYDEN is 25 miles west and takes direct seasonal flights from a long list of American cities through the ski season, which makes Steamboat easier to reach in February than in July. Outside the season the service thins sharply and most people drive from Denver.

IN TOWN THE BUS IS FREE AND IT WORKS. Steamboat Springs Transit runs free local routes connecting the town, the mountain base and the condominium areas, frequently in season. You can have a Steamboat ski week with no car at all, which is unusual in Colorado, and if you are coming without one, stay in town or at the base rather than between them.

IF YOU DRIVE IN WINTER, Colorado's traction law applies and is enforced: snow tyres, a four wheel drive, or chains, with real fines for blocking a pass without them. A rental from Denver in January should be checked for what it actually has on it.

The Steamboat Springs Packing List

Deep cold in a valley that traps it, very dry air, strong high-altitude sun, a 3,200 metre summit, and hot springs you will walk out of wet.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the foundation of a Steamboat winter rather than an addition to it, for a reason specific to this snow. CHAMPAGNE POWDER IS DRY, SO IT BRUSHES OFF INSTEAD OF SOAKING IN, and the moisture you have to manage is your own: you work hard, you ride a cold lift, you stand in a queue. Wool holds its warmth when damp where a synthetic base layer chills you the moment you stop, which is the whole difference between a full day and a short one. Add the heavyweight merino base layer for February Merino bottoms under ski trousers are the obvious third wool item and we have deliberately not linked one, because on a six-link budget they are the least load-bearing thing on this particular list: Champagne Powder is dry enough that it brushes off ski trousers rather than soaking through them, so the legs stay drier here than at a wet coastal resort and the two tops plus the parka do more work. If you run cold, add them anyway.

A waterproof insulated ski parka, and for summer a Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket, because the afternoon storm is close to a daily event in July.

A merino beanie and insulated winter gloves, which are the two items people most regret skimping on at these temperatures.

Waterproof insulated snow boots for the town, because Lincoln Avenue and the Strawberry Park road are packed snow and ice for four months and a ski boot is no use for dinner.

Not linked and worth packing: A SWIMSUIT, obviously, and read the Strawberry Park paragraph above before deciding which springs you are going to; A QUICK DRY TOWEL AND A BAG FOR A WET ONE, because you will be walking back to a car in the cold; SUNSCREEN AND LIP BALM, since this registry holds no sunscreen entry and snow glare at 3,200 metres burns faces badly; SUNGLASSES OR GOGGLES, also not in the registry; HEAVY MOISTURISER, because the air here is genuinely arid and that is the commonest minor complaint; AND CASH for Strawberry Park, which takes no cards.

Essential Resources for Women in Steamboat Springs

Emergency numbers: 911 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile. Calls are answered locally and dispatchers will stay on the line. For non-urgent police matters many cities also run a 311 information line.

THE REAL HAZARDS HERE ARE WEATHER, ALTITUDE AND ONE ROAD, AND NONE OF THEM APPEARS IN ANY ADVISORY. THE ALTITUDE SPLIT IS THE ONE PEOPLE MISJUDGE: the town is a moderate 2,050 metres and the ski summit is above 3,200, so a visitor who feels fine in Steamboat can be a thousand metres higher within twenty minutes of buying a lift pass. Headache, breathlessness and bad sleep on the first night are normal; what is not normal is symptoms that worsen rather than settle, confusion or unsteadiness, and the answer to those is to go down, which here is easy. Drink far more water than feels necessary, because the air is arid as well as thin, and go easy on alcohol the first evening. COLORADO HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST LIGHTNING CASUALTY RATES IN THE UNITED STATES, and the July and August pattern is a storm building over the ridges in the early afternoon, so the whole strategy for a summer hike is to be off anything exposed by noon rather than to watch the sky. RABBIT EARS PASS IS THE SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE for a winter trip: it closes, and when it does there is no quick way round, so check COTRIP before driving and keep a day of slack in a tight itinerary. EXTREME COLD is the fourth: minus twenty in the valley on a clear January night is ordinary, and frostbite on exposed cheeks and fingers develops faster than people expect while they are standing still.

And the ones specific to the attractions. THE STRAWBERRY PARK ROAD is unpaved, steep and narrow, requires four wheel drive or chains in winter, and the shuttle exists because of it. THE SPRINGS THEMSELVES are hot mineral water: do not get in alone, do not get in after drinking, and work down to the hotter pools rather than straight into them. THE YAMPA IS CLOSED TO TUBING when flows fall or the water warms, which the city announces, and the trout fishery is the reason. AND THIS IS BEAR COUNTRY: black bears are active in the valley from spring to autumn, the town has bear-resistant bin rules for that reason, and food goes inside rather than in a car.

The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States and no country-level warning. Its guidance concentrates on the practical differences a British visitor meets: entry requirements and ESTA, the cost of healthcare without insurance, extreme weather including hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts between June and November, and wildfire and heat risk in the west and south-west.

US State Department travel advisory: there is none, and this is not an omission. The State Department issues travel advisories for other countries, not for the United States itself, so no US advisory for this destination exists to link. In its place, the Government of Canada advice for the United States gives an equivalent third-country assessment.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits. The FCDO names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States. The same advice also covers Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Main hospital: UCHEALTH YAMPA VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER in Steamboat Springs is a full hospital with a 24-hour emergency department and an orthopaedic service that exists because of the mountain, so a ski injury is treated locally and well rather than transferred. Anything requiring a trauma centre is a flight or a long drive to Denver. MAKE SURE YOUR TRAVEL INSURANCE EXPLICITLY COVERS WINTER SPORTS, because a great many policies exclude skiing and snowboarding outright and almost all exclude them off piste, and American medical costs make that the single most expensive assumption on this trip. This is the single biggest practical difference for a visitor: there is no public health system, an emergency room visit without insurance can run into thousands of dollars, and an ambulance is billed separately and is not free. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is not optional in the United States, and you should carry your policy number and the insurer's 24 hour number somewhere you can reach them. Urgent care clinics handle anything short of an emergency far more cheaply and quickly than an emergency room, and are the right choice for a sprain, an infection or stitches.

Official health authority: the CDC travellers' health pages, the US federal health authority for visitors. covers the CDC's travellers' health pages

Embassy contact: the United States is the host country, so there is no US embassy to contact. Your own country's embassy is in Washington DC, with consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Boston. Find yours before you travel and save the number.

Official tourism authority: Brand USA, the national tourism marketing body. covers the country, and CDOT's COTRIP service is the authority that decides whether Rabbit Ears Pass is open and what traction law is in force, which is the one page to check before a winter drive

Takeaways

The town is named after a chugging spring that the railway silenced in 1908. You can still visit it, and it is quiet.

Champagne Powder and Ski Town USA are both registered trademarks, and the Olympic record behind the second is real.

Strawberry Park Hot Springs is clothing-optional after dark and cash only. Old Town Hot Springs is the swimsuit alternative.

The town is 2,050m and the ski summit is above 3,200m. Rabbit Ears Pass is the one road and it closes.

Solo women safety assessment: Steamboat Springs is a very easy and very safe place to travel alone. It is a small, prosperous Colorado mountain town with a working ranching community alongside the resort, violent crime is rare, the free town bus means you need no car once you arrive, eating alone at the bar is completely normal in a ski town, and the ski school and the guided trips take individuals as a matter of routine. THE RISKS ARE ENVIRONMENTAL AND LOGISTICAL RATHER THAN HUMAN. Altitude is the first and the split is what catches people: the town is a moderate 2,050 metres and the ski summit is above 3,200, so you can be a thousand metres higher within twenty minutes of arriving; drink more water than you think, take the first evening gently, and treat worsening symptoms, confusion or unsteadiness as a reason to go down rather than to rest. Cold is the second: minus twenty in the valley is an ordinary January night and frostbite develops while you stand still, so cover every piece of skin. In summer the hazard inverts, because COLORADO HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST LIGHTNING CASUALTY RATES IN THE COUNTRY and storms build over the ridges early in the afternoon, so be off exposed ground by noon. RABBIT EARS PASS IS THE SINGLE ROAD and it closes in storms, so check CDOT's COTRIP before driving and do not plan a tight connection out of Denver in January. On the springs, Strawberry Park is clothing-optional after dark, cash only and up an unpaved road that needs four wheel drive in winter, so take the shuttle and decide in advance whether that is your evening; Old Town Hot Springs in the middle of town is the swimsuit option. Do not get into hot mineral water alone or after drinking. This is bear country from spring to autumn, so food goes indoors. And check that your insurance covers winter sports, because most policies do not. 911 reaches everything.
