Locarno Packing List for Women: The Warmest Place in Switzerland

Locarno and Lake Maggiore under warm sunset light, Ticino, Switzerland

Locarno sits at 196 metres on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, which makes the area around it the lowest point in Switzerland and comfortably the warmest. There are palm trees, camellias and magnolias in the lakeside parks, the winters barely freeze, and the whole place feels considerably more Italian than Swiss, which it very nearly was: Ticino chose the confederation in 1803 and has spoken Italian ever since.

Above the town, reached by funicular, the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary hangs on a crag with the lake below it. Behind it, the Verzasca and Maggia valleys run up into granite country that is entirely different from the lakeside. And in August the Piazza Grande becomes an open air cinema for eight thousand people at the Locarno Film Festival, one of the oldest in the world. Pack for lake heat, mountain rain and a hard sun.

What Makes Locarno Different to Pack For

Mediterranean below, alpine above

Summer on the lake runs 18°C to 29°C and humid, with genuine subtropical feel. Winter runs 1°C to 10°C and snow in the town is rare. Twenty minutes up a valley the weather changes completely, and the peaks behind hold snow into June.

A merino wool base layer for women is not the obvious pack for a palm tree town, and it earns its place the moment you go up a valley or take the funicular in February.

It rains hard here

Ticino is among the wettest cantons in Switzerland, and the rain arrives as heavy thunderstorms rather than drizzle, concentrated in spring and late summer. That matters in the valleys because the rivers respond within an hour.

Granite that is lethal when wet, and when dry

The Verzasca and Maggia riverbeds are polished granite slabs. They look like ideal places to sit and swim and they are extraordinarily slippery, wet or dry. This is the single biggest practical hazard in the region and it is the reason for proper footwear.

Recommended Tours and Experiences

The Locarno Packing List

Footwear

Flat and grippy for the old town, and something with a serious sole for the valleys. Waterproof hiking shoes are the right tool for the Verzasca and Maggia, both for the granite and for the mule tracks between the stone villages, which are steep and often wet.

Water shoes if you intend to get in the rivers, which have rock entries and strong current.

Clothing

Light layers for the lake and a warm layer plus shell for anything above it. Ticino dresses in Italian style, a little smarter than German speaking Switzerland, and the lakefront in the evening is a passeggiata.

Covered shoulders and knees for the Madonna del Sasso and the valley churches, several of which are working sanctuaries rather than monuments.

For summer and the festival

A wide brim sun hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. During the festival the Piazza Grande screenings begin after dark and run late, seated outdoors, and it cools considerably by midnight, so take a layer to a film even in August.

For rain

A packable rain jacket at any time of year. Ticino thunderstorms are sudden and heavy and an umbrella is no use in a valley wind.

Practical

Cash alongside cards. A Ticino Ticket, given free by many hotels, which covers regional transport including the funicular and the valley buses, and changes the arithmetic of a stay here entirely.

What to Wear at Key Sites

Madonna del Sasso

A pilgrimage sanctuary founded in 1480 after a reported apparition, on a crag above the town at Orselina, reached by funicular, by road, or on foot up a stepped path lined with chapels.

Practically: the walking route is around 350 steps through the via crucis chapels and takes about half an hour uphill. Covered shoulders and knees inside. The terrace gives the lake and the delta, and the cable car continues above to Cardada and Cimetta for the higher view.

The Verzasca valley

The Ponte dei Salti at Lavertezzo, a double arched stone bridge over green water between white granite slabs, and a chain of stone roofed villages above it. The dam at the mouth is where the GoldenEye bungee jump was filmed.

Practically: this is beautiful and genuinely dangerous. The granite gives no grip, the water is glacier cold and causes immediate cold shock, the current is far stronger than it appears, and the level rises fast when rain falls higher in the valley while you are still in sun. People drown here most years, usually after jumping from the bridge. Do not jump. Swim only where locals are swimming and get out if the water rises or clouds.

The Piazza Grande and the old town

The arcaded main square, the Castello Visconteo, and the stepped lanes climbing behind it. In August the square holds a screen twenty six metres wide and the largest open air cinema audience in Europe.

Practically: flat and easy. Festival week fills every bed in the region and prices rise sharply, so book months ahead or stay well outside.

Monte Verita

On the hill above Ascona, a colony of vegetarians, anarchists, theosophists, nudists and dancers established itself in 1900 and ran for three decades. Hermann Hesse came for a cure, Isadora Duncan and Rudolf Laban worked on movement there, Carl Jung lectured, and the place is a genuine node in the history of European counterculture. The buildings survive, including a Bauhaus hotel from 1927 and the Casa Anatta, and there is a museum.

Practically: a steep walk or a short bus from Ascona, with gardens and a tea house to sit in. It takes a couple of hours and it is the most interesting hour in the region for anyone who likes odd history. Cool under the trees, which is worth knowing in August.

Ascona and the lake

Ascona is fifteen minutes west, smaller and prettier, with a long lakefront of pavement cafes. Boats run across Maggiore to the Brissago islands, which have a botanical garden, and on into Italy.

Practically: the boat is the pleasant way to move around and the crossing to Italy needs your passport. Exposed on deck.

The Maggia valley and Cardada

The Maggia has stone villages, waterfalls at Foroglio and natural pools. Cardada and Cimetta, above Madonna del Sasso by cable car and chairlift, give walking at 1,670 metres with the lake below.

What Not to Bring

Leave smooth soled shoes for the granite. Leave any intention of jumping from the Ponte dei Salti.

Leave the assumption that Switzerland means cold, and leave the opposite assumption too, because the valleys behind are alpine. Leave a plan to visit during the film festival without a booking.

Essential Resources for Women in Locarno

Emergency numbers in Switzerland: 112 is the European emergency number. Police 117, ambulance 144, fire 118. Mountain and air rescue is 1414, run by Rega, and the Rega app transmits your coordinates, which matters in the valleys where signal fails.

Tourist support: Switzerland has no separate tourist police. The Ticino cantonal police take reports from visitors and operate in Italian, with English available. A stolen passport needs a police report before the consulate can issue a replacement.

US Embassy and consulate: the embassy is in Bern at Sulgeneckstrasse 19, telephone +41 31 357 7011, at ch.usembassy.gov, around three and a half hours away through the Gotthard. Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before you travel.

Main hospital or clinic: the Ospedale La Carita in Locarno has a 24 hour emergency department and is part of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale network, with the larger Ospedale Civico in Lugano around forty minutes away. Rega covers helicopter rescue in the valleys. Swiss healthcare is excellent and expensive and rescue is billed to the person rescued, so travel insurance covering mountain and water rescue is essential.

Official health authority: the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health at bag.admin.ch.

US State Department travel advisory for Switzerland: current advisory level and detail. Read it directly rather than relying on this page.

UK FCDO travel advice for Switzerland: entry requirements, safety and health guidance.

Official tourism authority: Switzerland Tourism at myswitzerland.com, with the Ascona Locarno regional board at ascona-locarno.com for funicular and cable car hours, valley bus timetables, river conditions and the festival programme.

Solo women safety assessment: Locarno is very safe for a woman travelling alone. Crime is low, the lakefront and the Piazza Grande are busy and well lit into the evening, public transport is punctual, and eating alone is unremarkable in a region with a strong cafe culture. Violent crime against visitors is rare and harassment is uncommon. Petty theft is limited and concentrated around the station and in festival crowds, where the density is considerable and a closed bag worn in front is sensible. The serious risk in this region is water and it should be taken more seriously than the gentle lakeside setting suggests. The Verzasca kills people most years. The granite is polished and offers no grip at all, so falls into the water are common; the water is glacier fed and causes immediate cold shock even in August; the current is far stronger than it looks from a bridge; and the level can rise very quickly when rain falls higher up a valley you cannot see. Jumping from the Ponte dei Salti is the specific activity responsible for most of the deaths, and local authorities discourage it. Beyond that, the valley roads are narrow with passing places and blind bends, the mule tracks between villages are steep and slippery, and phone signal disappears quickly once you leave the lake. Tell someone your route, install the Rega app, and treat a thunderstorm forecast as a reason to stay out of the riverbeds entirely.
