Packing List for Granville, France: What Women Should Bring

A scenic view of Granville, France, showcasing coastal houses and a historic church.

Granville sits on a rocky headland on the west coast of the Cotentin, a town of about 13,000 with a walled upper town on the promontory and a working port below it. It was fortified by the English in the 1430s, it was CHRISTIAN DIOR'S BIRTHPLACE, and it looks out over the bay of Mont Saint-Michel at a tidal range of up to fourteen metres.

What Is Here

THE HAUTE VILLE IS THE REASON TO COME. A grid of grey granite streets behind ramparts on the end of the headland, with the church of Notre-Dame-du-Cap-Lihou at its heart, the Musee du Vieux Granville in the old gatehouse, and a walk right round the walls with the sea on three sides. It is austere rather than pretty and it is the best thing here.

THE MUSEE CHRISTIAN DIOR IS IN HIS CHILDHOOD HOME, the Villa Les Rhumbs on the cliff, with a rose garden his mother made looking out to sea. Dior said the pink and grey of the house shaped his whole palette. It mounts a serious fashion exhibition each summer and is closed for much of the winter.

A picturesque lighthouse on the rocky coast of Granville, France, under a cloudy sky.

The lighthouse and the rock are the second image, and they are what the Cotentin coast does: low dark reef, big sky and a lot of water moving.

THE CHAUSEY ISLANDS ARE THE EXCURSION AND THEY ARE GENUINELY UNUSUAL. An archipelago 17km offshore, French but closer to Jersey in character, said to have 365 islets at low tide and 52 at high, which is the local way of describing that tidal range. Day boats run in season from the port, and there is one hotel. IT IS NOT GRANVILLE: the crossing takes about an hour and the weather cancels it.

The port is working rather than ornamental, with a fishing fleet, a marina and the ferries to Jersey and Chausey, and the mudflats at low tide are the honest face of the place.

Mont Saint-Michel is about an hour south, which makes Granville a far quieter base for it than anywhere closer.

When to Go

May to September. July and August are busy with French holidaymakers and are when the Chausey boats run most frequently.

The Dior museum opens for a season, typically late spring to autumn, so check before planning a trip around it.

Winter is wild, grey and quiet, and the ramparts in a gale are magnificent. Many things close.

THE CARNIVAL IN FEBRUARY is one of the biggest in Normandy and fills the town.

Plan the Chausey trip for early in your stay. Sea states cancel it and you want a second chance.

Getting There

By train, about three hours from Paris Montparnasse with a change, or direct on some services, with the station a short walk from the port.

By car, roughly three and a half hours from Paris and an hour and a half from Caen.

By ferry, seasonal services to Jersey and to Chausey from the port.

By air, Paris is the practical airport.

Is Granville Safe for Women?

Granville is a quiet working Normandy town and is safe. The hazards are entirely tidal and coastal. The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in France, and its terrorism wording is the strongest it uses: terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in France, with shopping centres, entertainment venues, sporting events, transport hubs and crowded gatherings named as possible targets. The everyday risks are more specific than that sounds. Pickpocketing is organised on the Paris Metro and on trains, typically in pairs with one person distracting you, and the FCDO records SERIOUS ASSAULTS on RER lines B and D, which matters because line B is the train most visitors take from the airports. Drink spiking is named with the drugs rather than hinted at: be alert to the possible use of date rape drugs including GHB and liquid ecstasy. Strikes and demonstrations happen at short notice and can stop trains and close roads, usually peacefully. And wildfires affect the south in hot dry summers.

If you are driving to a Channel port, the FCDO has a specific instruction. It records attempts by people to enter private vehicles in order to reach the UK illegally, that camper vans are targeted while stationary or in slow traffic, and that obstacles are sometimes placed on roads to ports including the Calais port road. Keep your doors locked, keep moving where it is safe to do so, do not leave the vehicle unattended, and if it is not safe to proceed, stop and call 112.

THE TIDE IS THE DANGER AND FOURTEEN METRES IS THE NUMBER TO REMEMBER. This is one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe. At low water the sea withdraws across flat sand and reef for a long way, and it returns faster than a person walks, filling channels behind you before the ground in front of you floods. DO NOT WALK OUT ONTO THE FLATS OR THE REEF. People are caught in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel every year and some of them drown.

THE SAME TIDE RUNS THROUGH THE CHAUSEY CROSSING, which is why the boats are cancelled by sea state rather than by rain, and why the archipelago's island count changes with the water.

The ramparts are a medieval wall with low parapets in places and a long drop to rock.

The water is cold year round and the currents are strong, with lifeguarded swimming at the Plat Gousset in season only.

The Granville Packing List

A cold exposed headland with Atlantic weather and a boat trip in it.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the right first layer on a headland with sea on three sides, where the wind is constant and the temperature on the ramparts is several degrees below the sheltered port. On the Chausey boat it is the difference between an hour of pleasure and an hour of endurance. From October to April add a heavyweight merino base layer.

A Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket with a hood that cinches, in every month, and it doubles as the spray layer on the crossing.

Merrell Moab 3 waterproof hiking boots with Darn Tough merino socks: the GR223 coast path is mud and wet rock, and the port slipways are weed-covered granite.

A RAYMYLO insulated water bottle for Chausey, where there is one hotel and not much else.

Not linked and worth packing: A TIDE TABLE, free and the thing most likely to keep you safe here; SEASICKNESS TABLETS for the crossing, taken before boarding; A HAT WITH A CORD for the ramparts; SWIMWEAR if you want the Plat Gousset in season; and A WINDPROOF LAYER even in August. France is card-friendly throughout.

Essential Resources for Women in Granville

Emergency numbers: 112 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile, with operators who will find an English speaker. It is the single number across the whole European Union.

The tidal range here reaches about fourteen metres, among the largest in Europe. At low water the sea withdraws across flat sand and reef for a long way and returns faster than a person walks, filling channels behind you before the ground in front floods. DO NOT WALK OUT ONTO THE FLATS OR THE REEF: people are caught in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel every year and some drown. THE CHAUSEY CROSSING IS CANCELLED BY SEA STATE rather than by rain, so plan it early in your stay and expect an hour each way. THE RAMPARTS have low parapets in places with a long drop to rock. THE WATER IS COLD YEAR ROUND with strong currents, and swimming is lifeguarded at the Plat Gousset in season only. 196 is sea rescue. THE DIOR MUSEUM IS SEASONAL and closed much of the winter. If you drive to a Channel port, the FCDO's vehicle-entry instruction above applies.

US State Department travel advisory: the France advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

Main hospital: the Centre Hospitalier Avranches-Granville has an emergency department in the town, with the CHU de Caen about an hour and a half away for anything major. Dial 112 for an ambulance or 15 for the SAMU, and 196 for sea rescue, which in this bay is a frequent and serious business. France is in the EU, so a UK Global Health Insurance Card or an EU European Health Insurance Card gives you state-provided medically necessary care on the same terms as a resident, which means you pay the same patient share a French resident pays rather than nothing. That is not the same as free and it does not cover repatriation, so travel insurance sits on top of it. French hospitals are excellent and a pharmacie, marked by a green cross, handles minor problems without an appointment and will tell you where the duty pharmacy is out of hours. Tap water is drinkable everywhere. Dial 15 for a medical emergency or 112 for anything.

Official health authority: Sante publique France, the national public health agency. covers the Normandy regional health agency

US Embassy: the United States Embassy in Paris.

Official tourism authority: Atout France, the national tourism body. publishes tide tables, the Chausey and Jersey boat schedules, the Dior museum season and the carnival dates

Takeaways

Walk the ramparts of the haute ville. Sea on three sides.

Never walk out on the flats. Fourteen metres of tide outruns you.

Book Chausey early in your stay. The sea cancels it, not the rain.

The Dior museum is seasonal. Check before building a trip round it.

Solo women safety assessment: Granville is an easy, unglamorous and entirely safe place for a woman travelling alone. It is a working Norman town rather than a resort, the haute ville is quiet and residential, the port is busy by day, and the visitor population is French families and walkers on the coast path. The one ordinary judgement is the same as in any port: the quays and the industrial fringe are not where you would wander alone at two in the morning, and the town centre is perfectly fine. 112 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE free from any phone including a locked one, 15 reaches the SAMU, 196 is sea rescue, and there is a hospital with an emergency department in the town itself. FRANCE'S ADVISORY CONCERNS ARE NATIONAL rather than local, with the vehicle-entry clause applying if you drive towards a Channel port. THE DANGER AT GRANVILLE IS THE TIDE AND IT IS THE SAME DANGER THAT RUNS ALL ROUND THIS BAY. The range reaches about fourteen metres, which is among the largest in Europe, and the consequence is not a bigger beach but a different kind of ground: at low water the sea withdraws across flat sand and reef for a very long way, and when it returns it does so faster than a person walks and from more than one direction, flooding the channels behind you while the sand ahead of you still looks dry. THAT IS HOW PEOPLE DROWN IN THE BAY OF MONT SAINT-MICHEL EVERY YEAR, and the instruction is simple: do not walk out onto the flats or the reef, however inviting and however many footprints you can see. Pick up the free tide table on arrival. THE SECOND THING IS THE CHAUSEY CROSSING, which is an hour of open water each way in a bay with serious currents, cancelled by sea state rather than weather, so book it early in your stay and take the tablets before boarding rather than after. THE THIRD IS THE RAMPARTS, a medieval wall with low parapets in places and a long drop to rock below, which is a wonderful walk that wants attention in wind.
