Packing List for Deauville, France: What Women Should Bring

Vibrant beach umbrellas at Deauville beach in Normandie, France, with a tranquil seascape.

Deauville is a town of about 3,500 on the Cote Fleurie in Calvados, built in the 1860s as a seaside resort for Parisians and still performing that role. It has a racecourse, a casino, a film festival, a thalassotherapy industry and a beach with coloured parasols and a wooden boardwalk, and it is TWO HOURS FROM PARIS, which explains everything about it.

What Is Here

LES PLANCHES ARE THE POINT AND THEY ARE A LISTED STRUCTURE. The boardwalk runs along the back of the beach past a row of bathing cabins, each bearing the name of a film star who has attended the American Film Festival, with the parasols out on the sand in front. It is a thoroughly artificial and entirely charming piece of theatre, and walking it is what people come to do.

The architecture is the other half. Deauville invented a style: half-timbered Anglo-Norman villas with carved gables, built in the 1900s and 1920s, which is why the town looks like nowhere else on this coast. The Villa Strassburger is the one open to visitors.

Historic Normandy houses in Deauville, featuring ornate exteriors and classic French charm.

The villas are the second image, and they are everywhere once you leave the seafront.

HORSES ARE THE REAL ECONOMY. Deauville has two racecourses, La Touques and Clairefontaine, the most important thoroughbred sales in Europe at the Elie de Brignac auction house, and polo in August. The racing calendar, not the weather, is what fills the hotels.

TROUVILLE IS ACROSS THE RIVER AND IS THE BETTER TOWN FOR MANY PEOPLE. Five minutes over the bridge, it is older, cheaper, has a working fish market on the quay and a steeper, livelier feel. The two are routinely confused and are not the same place at all.

The American Film Festival is in early September and the Easter and August racing weeks are the other peaks.

When to Go

June to September for the beach, with July and August the fullest.

EARLY SEPTEMBER IS THE FILM FESTIVAL and August is racing and polo: both book out and both are the town at its most itself.

May and late September are quieter and the light on the coast is better.

Winter is grey and windy, the parasols are gone, and the thalassotherapy and the restaurants carry the town. It is a pleasant off-season weekend.

The Channel is cold in every month, which is the one thing visitors from the Mediterranean misjudge.

Getting There

By train, about two hours from Paris Saint-Lazare to Trouville-Deauville, which is one station serving both towns, with direct services at weekends.

By car, roughly two and a quarter hours from Paris.

By ferry, Portsmouth to Le Havre or Caen, each about 45 minutes away by road.

By air, Deauville-Normandie has limited services; Paris is the practical airport.

Is Deauville Safe for Women?

Deauville is among the safest and most decorous places in this library. The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in France, and its terrorism wording is the strongest it uses: terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in France, with shopping centres, entertainment venues, sporting events, transport hubs and crowded gatherings named as possible targets. The everyday risks are more specific than that sounds. Pickpocketing is organised on the Paris Metro and on trains, typically in pairs with one person distracting you, and the FCDO records SERIOUS ASSAULTS on RER lines B and D, which matters because line B is the train most visitors take from the airports. Drink spiking is named with the drugs rather than hinted at: be alert to the possible use of date rape drugs including GHB and liquid ecstasy. Strikes and demonstrations happen at short notice and can stop trains and close roads, usually peacefully. And wildfires affect the south in hot dry summers.

If you are driving to a Channel port, the FCDO has a specific instruction. It records attempts by people to enter private vehicles in order to reach the UK illegally, that camper vans are targeted while stationary or in slow traffic, and that obstacles are sometimes placed on roads to ports including the Calais port road. Keep your doors locked, keep moving where it is safe to do so, do not leave the vehicle unattended, and if it is not safe to proceed, stop and call 112.

THE SEA IS THE HAZARD AND THE BEACH IS DECEPTIVE. The sand is wide and flat and the water looks benign, but the Channel tidal range here is large, the water goes out a long way and returns quickly, and it is cold enough year round to cause cold water shock. The beach is lifeguarded in season at the central section only, and swimming outside those hours and that stretch is a different proposition.

The boardwalk is wood and is slippery when wet, which is most mornings.

Casino and racing crowds bring late nights but Deauville's version of that is well behaved, and the town is lit and policed.

Prices rather than danger are the thing to plan for: this is one of the more expensive small towns in France, and accommodation in festival or racing weeks is at a different level again.

The Deauville Packing List

Channel coast weather with a town that dresses for dinner.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the sensible base in a place where you will sit outside on a seafront in a wind that comes straight off the Channel: the air here is several degrees cooler than the same day inland, and wool under a lighter top solves it without bulk, which matters in a town where people dress up. From October to April add a heavyweight merino base layer.

A Columbia Fast Trek II fleece for the beach in the shoulder months and a Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket, since Normandy rain arrives sideways.

Darn Tough merino socks and comfortable flat shoes with grip for the wet boardwalk. This is not a hiking destination, and waterproof walking shoes are worth it only if you plan the coast path to Trouville and beyond.

A set of packing cubes, which earns its place here more than usual: Deauville is a town where you may genuinely want an evening outfit as well as a beach one.

Not linked and worth packing: SOMETHING SMARTER THAN YOU WOULD OTHERWISE BRING, because the casino has a dress code and the restaurants have an atmosphere; SWIMWEAR AND A WARM COVER-UP, since the water is cold; A HAT for the exposed beach; SUNGLASSES; and A BOOK for the boardwalk. France is card-friendly throughout.

Essential Resources for Women in Deauville

Emergency numbers: 112 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile, with operators who will find an English speaker. It is the single number across the whole European Union.

The beach is deceptive: the sand is wide and flat and the water looks benign, but the Channel tidal range here is large, the sea goes out a long way and returns quickly, and it is cold enough year round to cause cold water shock. The beach is lifeguarded in season at the central section only. LES PLANCHES ARE WOOD AND SLIPPERY when wet, which is most mornings. TROUVILLE IS A DIFFERENT TOWN across the river, older and cheaper with a working fish market, and the two are routinely confused; the station is called Trouville-Deauville and serves both. THE RACING AND FESTIVAL CALENDAR rather than the weather decides prices and availability: August racing and the early September film festival book out. If you drive to a Channel port, the FCDO's vehicle-entry instruction above applies. 196 is sea rescue.

US State Department travel advisory: the France advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

Main hospital: the Polyclinique de Deauville and the hospital at Trouville cover routine care, with the Centre Hospitalier de Lisieux about 30 minutes away and the CHU de Caen at 45 minutes for anything major. Dial 112 for an ambulance or 15 for the SAMU. France is in the EU, so a UK Global Health Insurance Card or an EU European Health Insurance Card gives you state-provided medically necessary care on the same terms as a resident, which means you pay the same patient share a French resident pays rather than nothing. That is not the same as free and it does not cover repatriation, so travel insurance sits on top of it. French hospitals are excellent and a pharmacie, marked by a green cross, handles minor problems without an appointment and will tell you where the duty pharmacy is out of hours. Tap water is drinkable everywhere. Dial 15 for a medical emergency or 112 for anything.

Official health authority: Sante publique France, the national public health agency. covers the Normandy regional health agency

US Embassy: the United States Embassy in Paris.

Official tourism authority: Atout France, the national tourism body. publishes the racing and film festival calendars, the Planches and beach cabin arrangements and the Villa Strassburger opening hours

Takeaways

Walk Les Planches. That is the whole idea of the place.

Cross to Trouville. It is older, cheaper and has the fish market.

The Channel is cold in every month. Swim briefly and between the flags.

Check the racing and festival calendar before booking. It decides the price.

Solo women safety assessment: Deauville is one of the most sedate destinations in this library and presents no concern at all for a woman travelling alone. It is a wealthy, decorous resort of three and a half thousand people whose visitors are Parisian families, couples and racegoers; the seafront and the boardwalk are busy and well lit into the evening, the casino and restaurant district is orderly, and the station is a short walk from the centre through residential streets. Dining alone here is completely unremarkable. 112 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE free from any phone including a locked one, 15 reaches the SAMU, 196 is sea rescue, and the CHU de Caen is 45 minutes away for anything the local clinics cannot handle. FRANCE'S ADVISORY CONCERNS ARE NATIONAL AND URBAN and none of them describes this town, with the single exception of the vehicle-entry clause if you drive to a Channel port, and Le Havre and Caen are each about 45 minutes away. THE RISK HERE IS THE SEA AND IT IS UNDERRATED PRECISELY BECAUSE THE SETTING IS SO CIVILISED. The beach at Deauville is wide, flat, raked and lined with parasols, and it looks like a swimming pool with sand. It is the English Channel: the tidal range is large, the water withdraws several hundred metres and comes back quickly, the temperature is low enough to cause cold water shock even in August, and lifeguards cover the central stretch during set hours in season and not otherwise. Swim between the flags, swim briefly, and treat the far ends of the beach as unsupervised water rather than more of the same. THE SECOND THING IS THE BOARDWALK, which is the town's emblem and is slick wooden planking most mornings. AND THE PRACTICAL POINT THAT WILL AFFECT YOUR TRIP MOST is neither of those: Deauville is expensive, the racing weeks in August and the American Film Festival in early September fill every room at a premium, and the calendar rather than the forecast is what you should check before booking.
