Packing List for Thun, Switzerland: What Women Should Bring

Thun Castle above the Aare river, Switzerland

Thun is a town of about 44,000 where the River Aare leaves Lake Thun, 30 minutes from Bern and 20 from Interlaken. It is the entrance to the Bernese Oberland, and most people pass through it on the way to the mountains without stopping, which is the mistake this post exists to argue against.

The town has a twelfth century castle on a hill, a medieval high street with its pavements built on the ROOFS of the shops below, and a river running through the middle of it so clear and so fast that the town swims and surfs in it.

What Is Here

THUN CASTLE is the frame at the top of this post, a Zahringen keep from around 1190 with four corner towers, now a museum, reached by a covered stair from the old town. The view from the top takes in the lake, the river and the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau behind.

The OBERE HAUPTGASSE has a street plan found almost nowhere else. The pavements run along the ROOFS of the ground floor shops, with the upper shops opening onto them, so the street works on two levels. It is a medieval solution to a narrow site and it is still in daily use.

THE AARE IS THE TOWN'S SUMMER AND IT IS GENUINELY UNUSUAL. The river leaves the lake cold, clear and fast, and from June to September people float down it on the current, which is a Swiss institution. There is also a STANDING WAVE at the Schleuse weir that is surfed year round, which is the second image here: river surfing in the middle of an inland town, 500 kilometres from any sea.

Lake Thun is the other half. Paddle steamers and modern boats run the whole length to Interlaken, calling at Spiez, Oberhofen and the castle villages, and the BEATUSHOHLEN caves on the north shore run a kilometre into the mountain with a waterfall at the entrance. The lake is swimmable from June.

The town has a long lakeside park, the Schadau castle and its gardens, and the Wocher Panorama, the world's oldest surviving panorama painting, which shows Thun in 1814 and is worth twenty minutes.

When to Go

June to September is the season for the river, the lake, the boats and the swimming. The Aare float only works when the water is warm enough and the town does it in numbers.

May and October are quieter and excellent for the castle, the old town and the boats, with the lake too cold for most.

December brings a good Christmas market and the ferris wheel in the third image, with the Alps white behind the town.

Thun's advantage over Interlaken is that it is a working Swiss town rather than a resort, so it does not close out of season and its prices are closer to ordinary Swiss than to Oberland tourist.

Getting There

By train, Bern to Thun takes about 20 minutes and Interlaken about 25, with Zurich around an hour and a half. The station is beside the river and the boats leave from next to it.

By boat, the lake service connects Thun to Spiez, Oberhofen, Beatushohlen and Interlaken, and a day ticket on it is one of the better ways to spend a summer day in Switzerland.

By car, the A6. Three Swiss road facts matter more than the general advice. A VIGNETTE is required to use the motorways, bought at most border crossings, petrol stations and post offices or online, and driving without one risks a large fine. ROADS OUTSIDE URBAN AREAS ARE NARROW AND WINDING and the FCDO warns that conditions DETERIORATE FAST EVEN IN SUMMER, especially in heavy rain and in snowfall at altitude, so winter tyres and snow chains are the norm rather than a precaution. And traffic police ENFORCE STRICTLY, with any serious breach risking heavy fines or imprisonment. If you are in an accident, the orange emergency telephones along the roads are the way to call for help.

In town, everything is walkable and the old town is largely pedestrian.

Is Thun Safe for Women?

Thun is a prosperous, calm Swiss town and crime is barely a consideration. The FCDO publishes NO ADVISED-AGAINST AREAS ANYWHERE IN SWITZERLAND and the country has no regional-risks page at all, which answers the question most people are really asking. The advisory was last updated on 11 AUGUST 2026 and the change was to the European Entry/Exit System rather than to anything on the ground. On terrorism it uses the weaker of its two formulas, that attacks CANNOT BE RULED OUT, rather than the likely-to-try wording it applies to Austria and Sweden. What the page does carry is almost entirely about the mountains and the roads, which is the right emphasis for a country where the hazards are environmental rather than criminal.

The FCDO records a LOW RATE OF SERIOUS CRIME in Switzerland and then names where the petty crime is, which is more useful than a general warning: INCREASED REPORTS OF PETTY THEFT ESPECIALLY IN LARGER CITIES, AT GENEVA AIRPORT AND ON TRAINS TO AND FROM GENEVA. Elsewhere it is the ordinary advice to be alert at airports, railway stations and in crowds and not to leave valuables unattended.

THE RIVER IS THE REAL HAZARD AND IT IS NOT OBVIOUS, because it looks like a swimming pool. The Aare leaves the lake cold, moves fast and does not slow down for anyone. People drown in it every year in Switzerland, and the pattern is consistent: entering without knowing where the exit is, going in after alcohol, or being carried past the intended exit by a current stronger than it looks. GET IN AND OUT AT THE MARKED PLACES, know your exit before you enter, never do it alone and never after drinking.

The weir and the standing wave are for surfers with equipment and local knowledge, not for swimmers to drift into. The hydraulics below a weir recirculate and are genuinely dangerous.

The lake is an Alpine lake: warm on the surface and cold below, supervised at the lidos and not elsewhere.

Switzerland's face-covering rule is CANTONAL RATHER THAN NATIONAL and that distinction is the whole point for a visitor. The FCDO names TICINO AND ST GALLEN, where it is illegal to cover your face in public INCLUDING FOR TOURISTS, with a fine of 100 TO 10,000 SWISS FRANCS. It is aimed at balaclavas, full veils and masks rather than at a scarf in a blizzard, but the practical note is that the rule changes when you cross a cantonal border, which in Switzerland can happen several times in a day.

The Thun Packing List

A lakeside town at 560 metres, in and out of cold water, with mountains an hour away.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the sensible layer here because Thun is a base rather than a destination on its own: the same day often includes a warm town, a cold boat deck and a lift into the Oberland, and wool covers that range without a change of clothes. It also dries and keeps working if you have been in the river. A heavyweight merino base layer from November to March.

Over it, a windproof layer, which the Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket provides along with the Oberland rain.

Comfortable walking shoes for the old town and the castle stair, with Merrell Moab 3 waterproof hiking boots if you are heading up into the mountains, which most visitors to Thun are. Darn Tough merino socks either way.

Kahtoola MICROspikes from December to February for the castle stair and the riverside paths.

Not linked and worth packing: SWIMWEAR AND A DRY BAG, which is the standard Aare kit, since the dry bag is what carries your clothes downstream while you float; FLIP FLOPS OR WATER SHOES for the river exits, where our range covers only an entry with a contested product identity so this is advice rather than a link; SUNGLASSES; and SWISS FRANCS rather than euros, though cards work everywhere.

Essential Resources for Women in Thun

Emergency numbers: 112 works everywhere in Switzerland and routes you to the service you need, and the country also runs direct numbers that are sometimes quicker: 117 for police, 118 for fire and 144 for an ambulance. THE ONE TO SAVE BEFORE YOU GO INTO THE MOUNTAINS IS 1414, REGA, the Swiss Air-Rescue service, which is the helicopter operator for alpine emergencies and is reachable from anywhere in the country. The FCDO's own instruction for a medical emergency is to dial 112 or 144 and ask for an ambulance, and to contact your insurer quickly if you are referred on for treatment.

THE AARE LOOKS LIKE A SWIMMING POOL AND IS A FAST COLD ALPINE RIVER. People drown in Swiss rivers every year and the pattern is consistent: entering without knowing where the exit is, going in after alcohol, or being carried past the intended exit. Get in and out at the MARKED places, know your exit before you enter, never float alone and never after drinking. THE WEIR AND ITS STANDING WAVE are for equipped surfers, not for swimmers to drift into, because the hydraulics below a weir recirculate. Lake Thun is warm on the surface and cold below, supervised at the lidos only. Switzerland uses the FRANC rather than the euro.

US State Department travel advisory: the Switzerland advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/switzerland, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

Main hospital: the Spital Thun on Krankenhausstrasse is the regional hospital with a full emergency department, and the Inselspital in Bern, one of Switzerland's major trauma centres, is about half an hour away. REGA, the air rescue service, is 1414. Switzerland is NOT in the European Union and IS in the EEA for these purposes, and a UK Global Health Insurance Card or an EU European Health Insurance Card does give you state-provided medically necessary care on the same terms as a resident. That is not the same as free and it does not cover repatriation, a private clinic or MOUNTAIN RESCUE, which is the gap that matters here and is why the insurance paragraph above is not boilerplate. Swiss healthcare is excellent and expensive in equal measure. TICKS ARE A REAL CONSIDERATION rather than a footnote: the FCDO names biting insects and ticks ESPECIALLY BETWEEN APRIL AND OCTOBER and names TICK-BORNE ENCEPHALITIS, for which a vaccine exists and is worth discussing with a travel clinic at least 8 weeks ahead if you plan to walk in forest or long grass. ALTITUDE SICKNESS is named as a risk in the ski and hiking areas, and the advisory lists them by name, including Engelberg-Titlis, Saas-Fee, St Moritz, Corvatsch and the Matterhorn.

Takeaways

Stop here rather than passing through. A working Swiss town twenty minutes from Interlaken at ordinary prices.

Walk the roof-top pavements. The Obere Hauptgasse works on two levels and almost nowhere else does.

Respect the Aare absolutely. Know your exit before you get in, and never after a drink.

Take the boat. Paddle steamers the length of the lake and the best value day out in the Oberland.

Solo women safety assessment: Thun is an easy and comfortable Swiss town to travel alone in, with a compact walkable old town, excellent trains to Bern and Interlaken, good lighting and an ordinary working population rather than a resort crowd. THE FCDO PUBLISHES NO ADVISED-AGAINST AREAS ANYWHERE IN SWITZERLAND and the country has no regional-risks page at all. It records a LOW RATE OF SERIOUS CRIME and names where the petty crime is, which is larger cities, Geneva airport and trains to and from Geneva, so ordinary alertness at the station covers it here. On terrorism Switzerland uses the weaker of the FCDO's two formulas, that attacks cannot be ruled out. THE GENUINE HAZARD AT THUN IS THE RIVER, and it deserves emphasis precisely because it does not look dangerous: the Aare leaves the lake cold, clear and fast, the whole town floats down it in summer, and that is a Swiss institution rather than a reckless one, but people drown in Swiss rivers every year and the pattern barely varies. They enter without knowing where they will get out, they go in after alcohol, or the current carries them past the exit they intended. The rules are simple and not negotiable: use the marked entry and exit points, know your exit before you get in, never float alone, and never after drinking. THE WEIR AND THE STANDING WAVE are a separate matter again, for surfers with equipment and local knowledge, because the water below a weir recirculates and will hold a person. The lake is an Alpine lake, warm at the surface and cold beneath, with supervised lidos and unsupervised shoreline. Switzerland's face-covering ban applies in Ticino and St Gallen rather than here, and the country uses the franc.
