Packing List for Smogen, Sweden: What Women Should Bring

Fishing huts on the rocky coastline at Smogen, Sweden

Smogen is a village of about 1,300 people on an island in BOHUSLAN, on Sweden's west coast, roughly two hours north of Gothenburg. In July its population multiplies many times over, because the SMOGENBRYGGAN, a 600 metre wooden boardwalk lined with painted boathouses, is one of the most concentrated summer destinations in Scandinavia.

The rest of the year it is a working fishing village with a shrimp auction, and the contrast between the two Smogens is the most useful thing to understand before booking.

What Is Here

THE BRYGGAN IS THE DESTINATION and this post does not pretend otherwise. The boardwalk runs along the harbour past boathouses in ochre, red and white, now shops, galleries, bars and ice cream places, with boats moored the whole length. In July it is shoulder to shoulder; in October it is empty and the light is better.

THE GRANITE IS THE OTHER HALF AND IT IS WHAT MAKES BOHUSLAN LOOK LIKE NOWHERE ELSE. Smooth pink and grey rock, scoured by ice, running straight into the sea with almost no sand anywhere. People swim off the rocks rather than off beaches, and the frame at the top of this post is that coastline. The HALLO and RAMSVIK nature reserves nearby are bare granite and heather, and the KLEVA quarry and the sea baths at Smogen complete it.

The shrimp are not a cliché. Bohuslan shrimp are landed here and sold at the auction, and the standard way to eat them is a bucket with bread and mayonnaise on the boardwalk. The SEAFOOD SAFARI boats take visitors out to haul lobster and shrimp pots, which is the regional speciality and runs in season.

The swimming is from rocks and sea baths rather than beaches, with the Smogen sea bath and the sheltered coves on the island's seaward side. The water on this coast is cold and clear and the Atlantic swell reaches it.

The third image here is the village street in season, which conveys the density better than the boardwalk photographs do.

When to Go

July is the season and it is intense: everything open, everything full, prices at their peak and accommodation booked months ahead.

June and August are the better compromise, with warm water in August and much thinner crowds at both ends.

May and September are quiet and beautiful, with the granite at its best in low light and most restaurants still open at the edges.

October to April the village largely closes. It becomes a working fishing community of 1,300 with the shops shut, which is a genuine experience and is not what the photographs sell.

Getting There

By car, about two hours from Gothenburg on the E6 and route 171. THIS IS THE PRACTICAL WAY and the roads are good.

By bus, services from Gothenburg to Kungshamn, which adjoins Smogen across a bridge, taking about two and a half hours.

By train, the nearest stations are Uddevalla and Munkedal, with buses onward, which makes a car-free trip possible but slow.

Sweden's winter tyre rule is the firmest of the three in this group because it is a DATE RANGE rather than a condition. FROM 1 DECEMBER TO 31 MARCH, AND ANY OTHER TIMES DESIGNATED BY THE POLICE, ALL VEHICLES MUST HAVE WINTER TYRES. Romania's rule depends on snow being on the road and Norway's on snow or ice being present; Sweden's applies on a dry road in a mild December. The FCDO's sentence before it is the reason: DURING WINTER, SNOW AND ICE ON THE ROADS CAUSE ACCIDENTS DAILY. Confirm with the hire company that the car is on winter tyres rather than assuming a Swedish company will have done it, because the obligation lands on the driver.

PARKING IN SMOGEN IN JULY IS GENUINELY DIFFICULT and is the single most predictable frustration of the trip.

Is Smogen Safe for Women?

Smogen is a safe, prosperous Swedish village, and the FCDO's crime warnings for Sweden do not reach it. Sweden's crime section says something strong and it says it about three specific cities, which makes where it does NOT apply as much a part of the honest answer as where it does. The FCDO records that VIOLENT CRIME DOES OCCUR and that GANG-RELATED CRIME, INCLUDING KNIFE CRIME, SHOOTINGS AND EXPLOSIONS, HAS BEEN REPORTED IN MALMO, STOCKHOLM AND GOTHENBURG. Those are the country's three largest cities and the advisory names no others. The violence described is between criminal groups rather than aimed at visitors, and it is concentrated in residential districts rather than in the places a traveller goes. A smaller Swedish city is not covered by that paragraph and this page does not import it as though it were. What does apply everywhere is the ordinary part: PICKPOCKETS OFTEN TARGET TOURISTS FOR PASSPORTS AND CASH in major cities, so the passport belongs somewhere that closes.

Sweden's terrorism wording is at the higher of the two levels the FCDO uses for this group of countries, and it is worth knowing which. For Sweden and Austria it says TERRORISTS ARE LIKELY TO TRY TO CARRY OUT ATTACKS; for Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Norway it says attacks CANNOT BE RULED OUT, which is the weaker formula. Sweden's page adds that ATTACKS COULD BE INDISCRIMINATE, INCLUDING IN PLACES FREQUENTED BY FOREIGN NATIONALS, and that THE AUTHORITIES HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DISRUPTED A NUMBER OF PLANNED ATTACKS AND MADE A NUMBER OF ARRESTS. The useful reading of that last clause is the same as Austria's: a visible security presence is the system working rather than a sign of a current emergency.

The granite is the physical hazard and it is specific. Smooth ice-scoured rock running into the sea is slippery when wet and slimy below the waterline, there are no gradual entries, and the drop from rock to deep water is often immediate. That is how swimming here works and it is also how people get hurt.

The sea is cold and the Atlantic swell reaches this coast, with currents around the headlands.

The July nightlife is substantial, concentrated on a narrow wooden boardwalk over water, with a great deal of drinking. The combination of alcohol, a crowded quay and deep cold water beside it is the honest risk picture here, and it is why the ordinary rules matter: keep your drink with you, agree how the evening ends, and stay off the edge.

Two Swedish laws are worth knowing in advance, one because it changed recently and one because Sweden was first in the world to pass it. PAYING FOR SEX IS ILLEGAL, and the FCDO notes that FROM 1 JULY 2025 THIS ALSO INCLUDES THE PURCHASE OF SEXUAL ACTS ONLINE, which is a genuine extension rather than a restatement. And PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT OF CHILDREN IS ILLEGAL, which Sweden banned in 1979 before any other country, and which is enforced as an ordinary assault matter rather than as a cultural preference. On drugs Sweden is at the strict end even by Nordic standards: illegal drugs are prohibited EVEN IN SMALL QUANTITIES, with the FCDO naming jail sentences of UP TO 10 YEARS.

The Smogen Packing List

A granite coast with a short intense summer, cold water and constant wind.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women suits this coast for the reason it suits any exposed shoreline: the west coast wind does not stop, the evening temperature drops sharply the moment the sun goes off the rock, and you are often damp from swimming or spray. Wool stays comfortable through all of that. A heavyweight merino base layer from October to April, when Bohuslan is genuinely raw.

Over it, a WINDPROOF rather than a warm layer for most of the year, which the Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket provides along with the rain.

Footwear with real grip matters more here than in most places. Comfortable shoes with a proper sole for the boardwalk and the granite, and Merrell Moab 3 waterproof hiking boots for the Ramsvik and Hallo reserves, where the rock is uneven and the heather hides holes. Darn Tough merino socks either way.

Kahtoola MICROspikes only for a winter visit, when the boardwalk and the rock both ice.

Not linked and worth packing: SWIMWEAR AND A QUICK-DRY TOWEL; WATER SHOES for the granite entries, which our range covers only with an entry whose product identity is contested, so this is advice rather than a link, and on this coast they genuinely help; a SUN HAT THAT STAYS ON IN WIND; SUNGLASSES for the glare off pale rock and water; and almost NO CASH, since Sweden is card-based and many places take none.

Essential Resources for Women in Smogen

Emergency numbers: 112 is the single number for police, ambulance and fire across Sweden and works from any phone including a locked mobile, with English-speaking operators. For a non-urgent medical question, 1177 reaches VARDGUIDEN, the national healthcare advice line, which has English-speaking nurses and is the number Swedes actually use before going anywhere. For police matters that are not an emergency, 114 14. As in Norway, note that the FCDO states SEARCH AND RESCUE IS LIMITED in the remote Arctic north, so distance rather than response is the constraint up there.

SMOGEN HAS TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SEASONS: in July a village of 1,300 multiplies many times over with everything open and booked months ahead, and from October to April it largely closes and becomes a working fishing community with the shops shut. THE SWIMMING IS OFF SMOOTH ICE-SCOURED GRANITE: it is slippery wet, slimy below the waterline, there are no gradual entries and the drop to deep water is often immediate. The Atlantic swell reaches this coast with currents around the headlands. July nightlife is concentrated on a narrow wooden boardwalk over cold deep water. PARKING IN JULY IS GENUINELY DIFFICULT. Sweden is card-based and cash is frequently refused.

US State Department travel advisory: the Sweden advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/sweden, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

Main hospital: there is no hospital in Smogen. The nearest are at Uddevalla, roughly 50 minutes away, and the Norra Alvsborgs hospital at Trollhattan, with Sahlgrenska in Gothenburg about two hours as the regional centre. Sweden is in the EU, so a UK Global Health Insurance Card or an EU European Health Insurance Card gives you state-provided medically necessary care on the same terms as a resident, which in Sweden means paying the standard patient fee rather than nothing. Travel insurance sits on top for repatriation and for anything in the far north. START WITH 1177 RATHER THAN AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT for anything that is not urgent: the Swedish system is built around that line directing you to the right place, and walking into a hospital is the slower route. A pharmacy is an APOTEK, they handle minor problems without an appointment, and note that in Sweden ALL MEDICINES INCLUDING PAINKILLERS are sold through pharmacies and a limited supermarket range rather than in any shop, so bring what you normally rely on. Tap water is excellent everywhere. TICKS are common in southern and central Sweden, with Lyme widespread and tick-borne encephalitis present particularly around the Stockholm archipelago and the east coast, so a tick check after any walk in long grass or woodland is ordinary practice here rather than caution. In the north, the environmental risks are cold and distance, and in summer the MOSQUITOES AND BLACKFLY of Lapland are genuinely formidable and worth a head net.

Takeaways

Pick your season deliberately. July is a different village from October, in both directions.

Swim off the rocks carefully. Smooth wet granite with no shallow end is how this coast works.

Book parking and beds early. A village of 1,300 in July does not stretch.

Eat the shrimp where they land. A bucket, bread and the boardwalk.

Solo women safety assessment: Smogen is a safe, prosperous Swedish coastal village and travelling here alone is easy, with the main caveat being seasonal rather than personal. THE FCDO'S CRIME WARNING FOR SWEDEN DOES NOT REACH HERE: it records violent crime and gang-related shootings and explosions and names STOCKHOLM, GOTHENBURG AND MALMO specifically, describing a pattern between criminal groups rather than one aimed at visitors, and Bohuslan is named nowhere. On terrorism Sweden sits at the HIGHER of the FCDO's two formulas, that TERRORISTS ARE LIKELY TO TRY TO CARRY OUT ATTACKS, which is a national statement bearing on Gothenburg in transit. THE PHYSICAL HAZARD HERE IS THE GRANITE AND IT IS WORTH TAKING SERIOUSLY because it is how all the swimming works: the rock is smooth, ice-scoured, slippery when wet and slimy below the waterline, there is no gradual shelving entry anywhere, and the drop from rock into deep cold water is often immediate. The Atlantic swell reaches this coast and currents run around the headlands. THE SECOND IS THE COMBINATION THAT JULY PRODUCES: a narrow wooden boardwalk over deep cold water, very large crowds and substantial drinking, which is the honest risk picture and the reason the ordinary rules matter more than usual here. Keep your drink with you, agree in advance how the evening ends, and stay back from the edge. THE SEASONAL POINT IS PRACTICAL RATHER THAN DANGEROUS but it catches people: from October to April most of the village is shut, and a trip booked on summer photographs will find a working fishing community with closed shops. Paying for sex is illegal in Sweden, including since 1 July 2025 the purchase of remote sexual acts.
