Gotland is Sweden's largest island, about 90 kilometres off the east coast in the middle of the Baltic, with roughly 61,000 people and a capital, VISBY, that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the sunniest place in Sweden and it behaves like a different country from the mainland for about ten weeks a year.

Visby is the reason most people come and it genuinely delivers. A 3.4 kilometre medieval town wall with 27 surviving towers, almost completely intact, enclosing a town of stepped lanes, merchant houses and the ruins of about ten medieval churches left roofless after the Reformation. It was one of the most important Hanseatic trading towns in the Baltic and the architecture is the evidence.
What Is Here
The wall is the thing to walk and it is free. You can follow most of its circuit from outside, and the ruined churches inside, Sankt Nikolai and Sankta Karin among them, are open and roofless and used for concerts in summer. SANKTA MARIA is the one still roofed and in use as the cathedral, visible from the alleyway in the frame at the top of this post.
GOTLAND HAS ABOUT 90 MEDIEVAL CHURCHES SCATTERED ACROSS THE COUNTRYSIDE, nearly all still standing and most still in use, which is an extraordinary density for an island this size and is the real reason to hire a bike or a car and leave Visby.
THE RAUKAR ARE THE ISLAND'S OTHER SIGNATURE. They are sea stacks of weathered limestone standing on the shore, formed from ancient reefs, and the largest fields are on FARO, the smaller island off the northern tip reached by a free ferry, and at Langhammars and Digerhuvud. Faro was also Ingmar Bergman's home and the island where he filmed and is buried.
The island is flat and the cycling is the best way to use it. Gotland has a long network of quiet roads and a disused railway path, and bike hire in Visby is straightforward.
ALMEDALSVECKAN in late June or early July fills Visby completely. It is Sweden's political week, when the entire national establishment relocates to the island, and accommodation becomes essentially unobtainable. MEDELTIDSVECKAN, Medieval Week, in August does something similar for different reasons.
Beyond that: Lummelunda caves, the Bungemuseet open-air museum, long pale beaches at Tofta and Sudersand, and a limestone landscape of orchids and dry meadow in early summer.
When to Go
July and early August are the season, when the island is warm, the ferries run full and everything is open. This is also when Gotland is most expensive and most crowded.
June is the best compromise: long light, orchids in flower, the sea warming and the crowds not yet arrived. Avoid the Almedalen week specifically unless that is why you are coming.
September is excellent, with warm sea, open restaurants and far fewer people.
October to April the island largely closes. Many restaurants, hotels and attractions shut entirely, the ferry runs a reduced timetable and Visby becomes a quiet Swedish town of 25,000. It is beautiful and it is not the destination the summer is.
Getting There
By ferry, from Nynashamn south of Stockholm in about three hours and from Oskarshamn in about three, with Destination Gotland running both. Book ahead in summer, particularly with a vehicle.
By air, Visby Airport has frequent short flights from Stockholm and seasonal services from other Swedish cities.
On the island, bike hire, buses and car hire all work. VISBY'S WALLED CENTRE IS LARGELY CAR-FREE and the lanes are cobbled and steep in places.
Sweden's winter tyre rule is the firmest of the three in this group because it is a DATE RANGE rather than a condition. FROM 1 DECEMBER TO 31 MARCH, AND ANY OTHER TIMES DESIGNATED BY THE POLICE, ALL VEHICLES MUST HAVE WINTER TYRES. Romania's rule depends on snow being on the road and Norway's on snow or ice being present; Sweden's applies on a dry road in a mild December. The FCDO's sentence before it is the reason: DURING WINTER, SNOW AND ICE ON THE ROADS CAUSE ACCIDENTS DAILY. Confirm with the hire company that the car is on winter tyres rather than assuming a Swedish company will have done it, because the obligation lands on the driver.
Is Gotland Safe for Women?
Gotland is one of the safest places in Sweden and the FCDO's crime warnings for the country do not reach it. Sweden's crime section says something strong and it says it about three specific cities, which makes where it does NOT apply as much a part of the honest answer as where it does. The FCDO records that VIOLENT CRIME DOES OCCUR and that GANG-RELATED CRIME, INCLUDING KNIFE CRIME, SHOOTINGS AND EXPLOSIONS, HAS BEEN REPORTED IN MALMO, STOCKHOLM AND GOTHENBURG. Those are the country's three largest cities and the advisory names no others. The violence described is between criminal groups rather than aimed at visitors, and it is concentrated in residential districts rather than in the places a traveller goes. A smaller Swedish city is not covered by that paragraph and this page does not import it as though it were. What does apply everywhere is the ordinary part: PICKPOCKETS OFTEN TARGET TOURISTS FOR PASSPORTS AND CASH in major cities, so the passport belongs somewhere that closes.
Sweden's terrorism wording is at the higher of the two levels the FCDO uses for this group of countries, and it is worth knowing which. For Sweden and Austria it says TERRORISTS ARE LIKELY TO TRY TO CARRY OUT ATTACKS; for Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Norway it says attacks CANNOT BE RULED OUT, which is the weaker formula. Sweden's page adds that ATTACKS COULD BE INDISCRIMINATE, INCLUDING IN PLACES FREQUENTED BY FOREIGN NATIONALS, and that THE AUTHORITIES HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DISRUPTED A NUMBER OF PLANNED ATTACKS AND MADE A NUMBER OF ARRESTS. The useful reading of that last clause is the same as Austria's: a visible security presence is the system working rather than a sign of a current emergency.
The realistic risks here are cobbles, cycling and the Baltic. Visby's lanes are steep, uneven medieval cobble and are genuinely awkward in the wrong shoes; the island cycling is on quiet roads shared with summer traffic; and the Baltic is cold, with unsupervised beaches and offshore winds.
The raukar fields are loose limestone. The rock is sharp, the footing is uneven and the stacks are climbed by people who should not be climbing them.
Summer nightlife in Visby is substantial, particularly during Medieval Week and Almedalen, and the ordinary caution applies: keep your drink with you and agree how the evening ends.
Two Swedish laws are worth knowing in advance, one because it changed recently and one because Sweden was first in the world to pass it. PAYING FOR SEX IS ILLEGAL, and the FCDO notes that FROM 1 JULY 2025 THIS ALSO INCLUDES THE PURCHASE OF SEXUAL ACTS ONLINE, which is a genuine extension rather than a restatement. And PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT OF CHILDREN IS ILLEGAL, which Sweden banned in 1979 before any other country, and which is enforced as an ordinary assault matter rather than as a cultural preference. On drugs Sweden is at the strict end even by Nordic standards: illegal drugs are prohibited EVEN IN SMALL QUANTITIES, with the FCDO naming jail sentences of UP TO 10 YEARS.
The Gotland Packing List
A flat Baltic island with the most sun in Sweden, cobbles underfoot and a cold sea.
Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women works here for the Baltic island pattern, which is a warm sunny day and an evening that drops sharply the moment the sun goes off the water. Fine merino also does several days of cycling and walking without holding odour, which on an island where laundry means a campsite machine is a practical consideration. A heavyweight merino base layer from October to April.
Over it, a windproof layer more than a warm one, and the Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket covers that and the Baltic showers.
Merrell Moab 3 waterproof hiking boots with Darn Tough merino socks for the raukar fields, where the limestone is sharp and uneven. For Visby itself a comfortable shoe with a real sole matters more than a boot, because the cobbles are polished and steep.
Not linked and worth packing: SWIMWEAR AND A QUICK-DRY TOWEL for the beaches; a SUN HAT AND HIGH FACTOR SUNCREAM, because this is the sunniest place in Sweden and the pale limestone reflects; SUNGLASSES; INSECT REPELLENT for the summer evenings; and a REFILLABLE BOTTLE for the cycling. Sweden is almost entirely CARD-BASED and many places take no cash at all, which is the opposite of the advice most of this library gives.
Recommended Tours and Experiences
Essential Resources for Women on Gotland
Emergency numbers: 112 is the single number for police, ambulance and fire across Sweden and works from any phone including a locked mobile, with English-speaking operators. For a non-urgent medical question, 1177 reaches VARDGUIDEN, the national healthcare advice line, which has English-speaking nurses and is the number Swedes actually use before going anywhere. For police matters that are not an emergency, 114 14. As in Norway, note that the FCDO states SEARCH AND RESCUE IS LIMITED in the remote Arctic north, so distance rather than response is the constraint up there.
ALMEDALSVECKAN in late June or early July relocates the entire Swedish political establishment to Visby and makes accommodation essentially unobtainable; MEDELTIDSVECKAN in August does the same for different reasons. Book months ahead or avoid both. From October to April much of the island closes, with many hotels and restaurants shut and a reduced ferry timetable. Visby's walled centre is largely car-free with steep polished cobbles. The raukar fields are sharp uneven limestone and the stacks are not climbing structures. The Baltic is cold and most beaches are unsupervised. SWEDEN IS CARD-BASED and many places take no cash at all.
US State Department travel advisory: the Sweden advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.
UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/sweden, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.
Main hospital: Visby Hospital, Visby lasarett, is the island's only hospital and serves the whole of Gotland, with serious cases transferred to the mainland by air ambulance. That is worth knowing before cycling a long way from Visby. Sweden is in the EU, so a UK Global Health Insurance Card or an EU European Health Insurance Card gives you state-provided medically necessary care on the same terms as a resident, which in Sweden means paying the standard patient fee rather than nothing. Travel insurance sits on top for repatriation and for anything in the far north. START WITH 1177 RATHER THAN AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT for anything that is not urgent: the Swedish system is built around that line directing you to the right place, and walking into a hospital is the slower route. A pharmacy is an APOTEK, they handle minor problems without an appointment, and note that in Sweden ALL MEDICINES INCLUDING PAINKILLERS are sold through pharmacies and a limited supermarket range rather than in any shop, so bring what you normally rely on. Tap water is excellent everywhere. TICKS are common in southern and central Sweden, with Lyme widespread and tick-borne encephalitis present particularly around the Stockholm archipelago and the east coast, so a tick check after any walk in long grass or woodland is ordinary practice here rather than caution. In the north, the environmental risks are cold and distance, and in summer the MOSQUITOES AND BLACKFLY of Lapland are genuinely formidable and worth a head net.
Official health authority: the Public Health Agency of Sweden. covers Visby Hospital and the Gotland region

Takeaways
Walk the wall. Three and a half kilometres, 27 towers and free.
Leave Visby. Ninety medieval churches, the raukar and a flat island made for a bike.
Check the calendar twice. Almedalen and Medieval Week both fill the island completely.
Take the free Faro ferry. The best stone and Bergman's island.
Solo women safety assessment: Gotland is among the easiest and safest destinations in this library for a woman travelling alone. It is a prosperous Swedish island with very low crime, a compact walled capital that is largely car-free, a flat road network ideal for cycling, and a summer culture in which solo travellers and solo cyclists are entirely ordinary. THE FCDO'S CRIME WARNING FOR SWEDEN DOES NOT REACH HERE, and saying so matters as much as repeating it would: the FCDO records that violent crime occurs and that gang-related shootings and explosions have taken place, and it names STOCKHOLM, GOTHENBURG AND MALMO specifically. Gotland is named nowhere, and the pattern described is between criminal groups rather than aimed at visitors. On terrorism Sweden sits at the HIGHER of the FCDO's two formulas, that TERRORISTS ARE LIKELY TO TRY TO CARRY OUT ATTACKS, which is a national statement and bears on Stockholm in transit rather than on the island. THE REAL RISKS HERE ARE ORDINARY AND PHYSICAL. Visby's medieval lanes are steep, uneven and polished, and bad footwear causes more trouble than anything else. The raukar on Faro are sharp loose limestone and the stacks get climbed by people who should not. The Baltic is cold, the beaches are largely unsupervised and offshore winds are a real factor on an island. The island cycling shares quiet roads with summer traffic. VISBY HOSPITAL IS THE ONLY HOSPITAL ON GOTLAND and serious cases go to the mainland by air, which is worth remembering when you are 50 kilometres away on a bike. Two Swedish specifics: PAYING FOR SEX IS ILLEGAL, including, since 1 July 2025, the purchase of sexual acts performed remotely, and the country is so thoroughly card-based that many places take no cash at all.
Reading On
Gotland is the Baltic and the rest of Sweden is on the mainland. The Stockholm packing list covers the capital the ferries and flights leave from, and the Drottningholm packing list the royal palace on its own island just outside it. South, the Malmo packing list, Lund packing list and Helsingborg packing list cover Skane and the Danish crossing, and west the Gothenburg packing list the second city. Inland and north, the Dalarna packing list covers the lake and forest country and the Kiruna packing list Swedish Lapland. For the country the Sweden travel guide for women and the Sweden packing list carry the transport, the advisory and the practical material in full. For why wool suits a warm day and a cold Baltic evening, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
