The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano about twenty kilometres across with walls six hundred metres high, and roughly twenty-five thousand large animals live on its floor. They largely stay there rather than migrating, which is why it holds one of the highest densities of predators in Africa and one of the last populations of black rhino in Tanzania.

THE PACKING PROBLEM HERE IS ONE SENTENCE LONG AND ALMOST EVERYONE GETS IT WRONG. The crater rim sits above two thousand three hundred metres and the lodges are built along it, so evenings are cold, damp and often inside the cloud. The crater floor is a thousand metres lower and warm. YOU DESCEND INTO SUMMER IN THE MORNING AND COME BACK UP INTO WINTER IN THE AFTERNOON, which means you will use every layer you brought in a single day. People arrive dressed for Africa and spend the first evening shivering. Our Tanzania travel guide for women covers the country.
IT IS NOT A NATIONAL PARK AND THAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING THING ABOUT IT. Ngorongoro is a CONSERVATION AREA, which in Tanzanian law is a multiple-use designation, and MAASAI PASTORALISTS LIVE AND GRAZE THEIR CATTLE INSIDE IT. You will see herders and livestock alongside the wildlife on the crater highlands, which happens nowhere in the Serengeti, and it is managed by the NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA AUTHORITY rather than Tanzania National Parks, with its own fees and its own rules.
WE ALSO HAVE A LIVE Serengeti packing list WHICH CARRIES A SHORT SECTION ON THIS CRATER, because almost every Serengeti itinerary includes it. That section is about one thing, the altitude. This post is about the rest: the fees and how they are paid, the descent, what the conservation area actually is, where the hospital is, and the safety picture. Read them together.
The Crater, Olduvai and the Highlands
A caldera floor, a soda lake, the oldest hominin footprints in the world and two quieter craters nobody visits.
THE CRATER FLOOR IS THE REASON TO COME and a game drive down there is unlike anywhere else on the northern circuit, because the animals are enclosed by the walls rather than spread over a plain. LAKE MAGADI, the shallow soda lake in the middle, draws flamingos. The forest at Lerai holds elephants with the heaviest tusks you will see in Tanzania, because the old bulls come here. THE BLACK RHINO ARE THE HEADLINE and they are genuinely rare: a sighting is luck rather than a given, and the population is small and heavily protected.
THE DESCENT IS PART OF IT. The road down is a steep one-way track that takes about half an hour, and the ascent is a different one-way track, so you commit to a direction. VEHICLES MUST BE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE and the crater floor has a time limit, historically six hours, which your driver will manage.
OLDUVAI GORGE is forty-five minutes away inside the conservation area and is where the Leakeys found the hominin fossils that rewrote human prehistory. The museum was rebuilt and is good. LAETOLI, nearby, is where the three-and-a-half-million-year-old footprints were found. IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN WHERE PEOPLE CAME FROM, this is a more significant place than the crater and almost nobody stops.
EMPAKAAI AND OLMOTI CRATERS are the two the itineraries skip. Empakaai has a deep soda lake, a forested rim and a steep walk down to the shore, and on a clear day you can see Ol Doinyo Lengai, the active volcano, and sometimes Kilimanjaro. WALKING IS PERMITTED HERE WITH AN ARMED RANGER, which it is not in the crater, so if you want to be out of a vehicle this is where it happens.
THE MAASAI VILLAGES inside the conservation area receive visitors, and this is worth doing thoughtfully rather than enthusiastically. Arrange it through your lodge or a reputable operator, agree the fee beforehand, ask before photographing anybody, and expect a performance rather than an unmediated encounter, which is the honest description of almost all such visits anywhere.
NEARBY: the Serengeti is two to three hours north west and almost everyone combines them, Arusha is three to four hours east and is where most trips start, and Lake Manyara and Tarangire sit on the same road.
Recommended Tours and Experiences
Getting There, Fees and Getting Around
You arrive with a driver and a vehicle, and the fees are the largest single cost.
FROM ARUSHA it is three to four hours by road, and Arusha is an hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport. There are airstrips at Lake Manyara and inside the Serengeti for fly-in itineraries. NOBODY VISITS NGORONGORO INDEPENDENTLY IN A HIRE CAR in practice: the crater requires a four wheel drive, a guide is effectively necessary, and the fee structure is built around registered operators.
THE FEES ARE SUBSTANTIAL AND THEY ARE THE THING TO UNDERSTAND BEFORE BOOKING. The conservation area charges a per-person entry fee, and there is a SEPARATE CRATER DESCENT FEE PER VEHICLE on top of it, plus concession fees depending on where you sleep. They are set by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, they are revised and they are paid by CARD rather than cash at the gate. NO FIGURE IS PRINTED HERE DELIBERATELY, because park fees in Tanzania have changed more than once in recent years and a number in an article is a liability. Check the authority's own site or have your operator confirm what is included, and ask specifically whether the crater descent fee is inside your quoted price, because that is the line most often left out.
INSIDE, you are in your vehicle. GETTING OUT IS PERMITTED ONLY AT DESIGNATED PICNIC SITES and the reason is not bureaucratic: the crater floor holds lion, hyena and buffalo at close quarters. The one exception is a guided walk with an armed ranger, which happens on the rim and at Empakaai rather than on the floor.
When to Go
June to October is the dry season. The crater is good all year, which is not true of the Serengeti.
THE CRATER'S ANIMALS DO NOT MIGRATE, which is the practical difference from everywhere else on the circuit: there is no bad month for wildlife. What changes is the road, the grass and the crowds.
JUNE TO OCTOBER is the long dry season, with clear mornings, short grass, easy tracks and the best visibility, and it is also the busiest and most expensive. JANUARY AND FEBRUARY are a hot dry gap between the rains and are excellent, with calving on the nearby plains.
MARCH TO MAY IS THE LONG RAINS and the one period to think twice about: the crater floor can be heavy going, the rim spends more time in cloud, and some lodges close. It is also the cheapest and greenest, and the crater is still worth doing. NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER bring the short rains, usually an afternoon storm rather than a day of it.
THE RIM TEMPERATURE IS THE FIGURE TO PLAN AROUND AND IT IS NOT WHAT PEOPLE EXPECT. At above 2,300 metres the rim runs roughly 10 to 20C by day and can drop to 5C or lower at night, with mist, damp and wind, and June to August are the coldest. The crater floor is often 25 to 30C in the same hours. LODGES ON THE RIM FREQUENTLY HAVE NO HEATING beyond a fire and a hot water bottle in the bed, which they will provide and which tells you something.
Is Ngorongoro Safe for Women Travelers
Safe, and the risks are animals, altitude and the road rather than crime.
US State Department travel advisory: the Tanzania advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.
UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tanzania, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.
UK FCDO: Tanzania has ONE advised-against area and it is at the opposite end of an enormous country from the northern and lake circuits. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to within 20km of the Tanzanian border with the CABO DELGADO province of MOZAMBIQUE, in MTWARA in the far south east, because of attacks by groups linked with Islamic extremism across that border. It separately warns about the KIGOMA region on the Burundi border, where there have been armed robberies and vehicle hijackings, with the instruction to DRIVE ONLY IN HOURS OF DAYLIGHT. What applies nationally is more relevant to most trips: the FCDO records A RISK OF ARMED CRIME INCLUDING ARMED ROBBERY THROUGHOUT TANZANIA, with particular care advised in places frequented by visitors and foreign residents, and it names parts of Dar es Salaam specifically. It also notes that SOME NATIONAL PARKS ARE EXTREMELY REMOTE AND THAT EMERGENCY ACCESS AND EVACUATION CAN BE DIFFICULT, which is the sentence to weigh when booking a camping safari.
NGORONGORO IS ABOUT AS FAR FROM TANZANIA'S ONLY ADVISED-AGAINST AREA AS IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE. That zone is within 20km of the Mozambican border in Mtwara, in the far south east, roughly a thousand kilometres away, and the Kigoma warning concerns the Burundi border several hundred kilometres west. Neither reaches the northern circuit. What does apply nationally is the FCDO's note of ARMED CRIME INCLUDING ARMED ROBBERY THROUGHOUT TANZANIA, which in practice means Arusha and Dar es Salaam rather than inside a conservation area, and the sentence that matters most here is a different one.
THE FCDO WARNS THAT SOME NATIONAL PARKS ARE EXTREMELY REMOTE AND THAT EMERGENCY ACCESS AND EVACUATION CAN BE DIFFICULT, and that is the clause to weigh for Ngorongoro. You are three to four hours from Arusha on a road that is good but long, the nearest hospital of any size is at Karatu on the way out, and anything serious means a transfer or a flight. THAT IS WHAT EVACUATION COVER IS FOR, and it is not optional here.
The FCDO's sexual assault warning for Tanzania names beach resorts specifically. Its safety and security page records that INCIDENTS OF ASSAULT, RAPE AND SEXUAL AGGRESSION AGAINST FOREIGNERS HAVE OCCURRED, INCLUDING AT BEACH RESORTS, and sets out steps that are worth following rather than skimming: avoid walking alone at night, do not leave drinks unattended, and be wary of strangers and of anyone offering a lift or an invitation. That last clause is the one that tends to be dismissed, and it is the one the advice puts its weight on.
THAT WARNING NAMES BEACH RESORTS AND THIS IS NOT ONE, so the honest position is that the resort pattern does not describe a crater rim lodge, while the general clauses transfer directly: do not walk alone at night, which on the rim means do not walk between your tent and the main lodge without the escort they will offer, because the reason they offer it is buffalo and hyena on the lawn rather than crime. Do not leave a drink unattended. Lodge and camp staff are professional and a woman travelling alone on an organised safari is entirely ordinary.
THE ANIMALS ARE THE REAL HAZARD AND THE RULES ARE SIMPLE. Stay in the vehicle except at designated sites. Do not stand up through a roof hatch when a predator is close. KEEP YOUR TENT ZIPPED, because baboons and vervets will open an unzipped one and are strong and unafraid. At night on the rim, use the escort: elephant, buffalo and hyena move through rim camps routinely and buffalo are the most dangerous animal in Africa by the numbers.
ALTITUDE IS MILD BUT REAL AT 2,300 METRES. Most people notice nothing more than shortness of breath on steps for a day. If you are arriving from Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru you are already acclimatised; if you have flown in from the coast, take the first evening slowly and drink water.
Tanzania has no reciprocal health agreement with the UK or the United States, so insurance with medical cover and REPATRIATION is essential, and it should cover any safari, diving or trekking you intend to do, which standard policies often exclude. Private hospitals in Dar es Salaam and Arusha are used to foreign patients; provision thins quickly outside the cities, and the FCDO notes that emergency access and evacuation from remote parks can be difficult. MALARIA IS PRESENT THROUGHOUT and prophylaxis is a conversation to have with a travel clinic well before departure. A YELLOW FEVER CERTIFICATE is required if you arrive from a country with a risk of transmission, which includes several Tanzania is commonly combined with. Do not drink the tap water.
MALARIA IS LOWER ON THE CRATER RIM THAN ON THE COAST AND IS NOT ZERO. Transmission falls with altitude and 2,300 metres is high enough that mosquitoes are scarce on the rim, but your itinerary almost certainly includes lower ground at Manyara, Tarangire or the Serengeti, and the risk belongs to the trip rather than to one night. Take the prophylaxis your travel clinic recommends for the whole route.
Socially this is an easy place to be a woman alone. Safari staff are used to solo travellers, the lodges are secure, and the Maasai you meet in the conservation area are courteous. DRESS IS PRACTICAL RATHER THAN MODEST HERE, though Tanzania generally expects covered shoulders and knees in towns, so keep that for Arusha and Karatu rather than the crater.
The Ngorongoro Packing List
A warm mid layer, and this is the item people forget
A fleece mid layer. The crater rim at 2,300 metres is 10 to 20C by day and can reach 5C at night, in mist and wind, and lodges often have no heating beyond a fire. This is the single most commonly regretted omission on a northern Tanzania safari, because people pack for the equator and sleep on a cold mountain.
A merino base layer, because you change altitude twice a day
Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the right first layer for exactly this itinerary. You leave a 7C rim at dawn, spend the day at 25 to 30C on the crater floor, and come back up, so the garment you want is one that works under a fleece at six in the morning and alone at eleven. Merino also covers your arms against mosquitoes at lower altitude, and it goes several days between washes without holding smell, which matters when laundry on safari is occasional and dust is constant.
Permethrin for your clothing
Permethrin clothing treatment, applied before you travel. The rim is high enough that mosquitoes are scarce, but your itinerary will include lower ground where they are not, and treated fabric keeps working while you are asleep.
DEET for skin
A DEET insect repellent at 30 to 50 per cent. Also useful against tsetse flies, which are present in parts of the northern circuit, bite hard through thin fabric and are not deterred by much else.
Sun protection at altitude on the equator
A wide brim sun hat and a high factor sunscreen. Three degrees south of the equator at 2,300 metres the UV is severe even when the air is cold, which is the combination that burns people: you do not feel hot, so you do not reapply.
Shoes you can stand in a vehicle in
Walking shoes with closed toes and grip. You are mostly seated, but you will get out at picnic sites, walk a lodge path at night and possibly do the Empakaai descent, which is steep and slippery in the forest section.
Water you can keep cold and warm
An insulated water bottle. The tap water is not drinkable, lodges supply filtered water, and insulation works in both directions here, which is unusual: cold on the crater floor and hot on the rim at dawn.
The small things
BINOCULARS, which matter more at Ngorongoro than anywhere else on the circuit because the crater is wide and much of what you want to see is distant. A dust-proof bag or dry bag for a camera, since the crater floor in dry season is fine dust that gets into everything. Neutral colours, khaki, olive and brown, which is convention rather than rule, and AVOID DARK BLUE AND BLACK because they attract tsetse flies. Antimalarials on the clinic's schedule. A head torch, for rim camps where power runs on a generator with fixed hours. A card for the gate fees. A type G, D or A adapter for 230V. And a buff or scarf for dust on the descent road.
Essential Resources for Women in Ngorongoro
Emergency numbers: 112 is the general emergency number in Tanzania and 114 reaches the police, with 115 for ambulance and fire. INSIDE THE CONSERVATION AREA THOSE NUMBERS ARE NOT THE FASTEST ROUTE: your guide, your lodge and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority rangers are, and the rangers are the people who deal with a wildlife incident. SAVE YOUR INSURER'S 24-HOUR MEDICAL LINE before you travel, because for anything serious it is the insurer who organises the evacuation, not a local number.
Police and support: there is a police presence at Karatu and at the conservation area gates. The TANZANIA POLICE GENDER AND CHILDREN'S DESK, present at major stations, is the unit for sexual or gender-based violence and exists so such reports are not taken at a general counter. For a theft you will need a written police report for your insurer, which your lodge can help arrange.
Main hospital or clinic: most lodges have a nurse or a first aid capability and the conservation area has a clinic for staff. THE NEAREST REAL HOSPITAL IS AT KARATU, about forty-five minutes from the crater rim on the Arusha road, and the nearest full facilities are in ARUSHA, three to four hours away, where the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre and the regional hospital are the referral points. For anything major the answer is an air evacuation from one of the local strips to Arusha or Nairobi, and AMREF Flying Doctors is the service most insurers use. A pharmacy at Karatu covers minor needs. MALARIA TESTING IS QUICK AND WIDELY AVAILABLE: a fever on or after this trip needs a test, not a guess.
Official health authority: the Tanzanian Ministry of Health. There is no reciprocal health agreement, so insurance with medical cover AND AIR EVACUATION is essential, and the FCDO specifically notes that emergency access and evacuation from remote parks can be difficult. The nearest hospital is Karatu, about forty five minutes away, with Arusha three to four hours out
US Embassy: the United States Embassy in Dar es Salaam. The US Embassy is in Dar es Salaam, which is a flight rather than a drive from the northern circuit
Official tourism authority: the Tanzania Tourist Board. And the NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA AUTHORITY, which is the managing body rather than Tanzania National Parks, because this is a conservation area where Maasai pastoralists live rather than a national park. Its site carries the current entry and CRATER DESCENT fees, which are separate charges and are revised, and which are paid by card at the gate
The rim is above 2,300 metres and cold; the crater floor is a thousand metres lower and warm. You will use every layer in one day.
The crater descent is a separate fee from the entry fee. Ask whether your quoted price includes it, because that is the line most often left out.
Maasai pastoralists live inside the conservation area. It is not a national park, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority rather than TANAPA runs it.
Solo women safety assessment: Ngorongoro is a straightforward place to travel alone because almost nobody does it unaccompanied: you arrive with a driver and a vehicle, stay in a secure lodge or camp, and a solo woman on an organised safari is entirely unremarkable. It is around a thousand kilometres from Tanzania's only advised-against area, the Mozambique border strip in Mtwara, and the Kigoma border warning is several hundred kilometres west, so neither reaches the northern circuit. The FCDO's national note of armed crime including armed robbery is real but concerns Arusha and Dar es Salaam rather than a conservation area, and its sexual assault warning names BEACH RESORTS, which a crater rim lodge is not; the general clauses still apply, so do not walk alone at night and do not leave a drink unattended. THE SENTENCE IN THE ADVISORY THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS HERE is that emergency access and evacuation from remote parks can be difficult: you are three to four hours from Arusha, the nearest hospital is Karatu, and insurance with air evacuation is not optional. The real hazards are animals and cold. Stay in the vehicle except at designated picnic sites, take the escort between your room and the lodge after dark because buffalo, elephant and hyena move through rim camps and buffalo kill more people in Africa than most predators, and keep your tent zipped against baboons. The rim at 2,300 metres drops to 5C with mist and wind and lodges often have no heating, which is the most common way this trip is uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Altitude is mild. Malaria is low on the rim and present elsewhere on the itinerary, so cover the whole route. 112 or 114 for emergencies, the Gender and Children's Desk for sexual violence, and your insurer's line for an evacuation.
Reading On
Start with the Tanzania travel guide for women and the Tanzania packing list. The essential companion is the Serengeti packing list, which almost every Ngorongoro itinerary includes and which covers the migration and the plains, with the safari packing list for what a game drive itself asks of you. Arusha is where the northern circuit starts and finishes. For the mountain, the Kilimanjaro packing list, and for the lake country the Mwanza packing list. For the coast afterwards, the Zanzibar packing list and the Stone Town packing list. Across the border, the Maasai Mara packing list covers the same ecosystem from the Kenyan side. For why merino rather than cotton when you descend a thousand metres and climb back before dinner, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
