Tanzania Packing List for Women: What to Wear and Pack

Tanzania offers the most complete African experience available in a single country.

The Serengeti is the largest and most famous savanna ecosystem in the world, home to the Great Migration for most of the year and to year-round populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and the full cast of African wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a collapsed volcanic caldera containing one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on earth within its 260 square kilometer floor. Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 meters and one of the world's most accessible high altitude summit climbs. Zanzibar is a spice island off the Tanzanian coast with white sand beaches, turquoise Indian Ocean water, and Stone Town, one of the best preserved Swahili trading cities in the world. The Selous and Ruaha in the south are vast and remote wilderness areas with fewer visitors and exceptional wildlife.

Tanzania and Kenya together form the complete East African safari experience. Most serious safari travelers do both.

Understanding Tanzania's Climate

Tanzania has two rainy seasons similar to Kenya but with slight variations by region.

The long rains from March through May bring sustained heavy rain across most of Tanzania. The short rains from November through December are lighter and less disruptive. The dry seasons from June through October and January through February are the best times for wildlife viewing and the most comfortable travel conditions.

The Serengeti's climate varies by region within the park. The northern Serengeti near the Kenyan border runs similar to the Maasai Mara with highland temperatures and cool mornings. The southern and central Serengeti are hotter and drier. The wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti from January through March is one of the great wildlife events of the year.

The Ngorongoro Crater sits at 2,200 meters and runs significantly cooler than the surrounding lowlands. Crater mornings can be genuinely cold with temperatures near 10 degrees Celsius requiring serious layers. Afternoons warm considerably but the altitude keeps temperatures moderate year round.

Kilimanjaro's climate is its own entirely. The mountain creates its own weather systems and conditions at the summit can be extreme regardless of the season. The summit zone is arctic with temperatures well below freezing and wind chill making it feel colder.

Zanzibar runs tropical year round with the best beach conditions from June through October during the dry season. The monsoon from March through May brings heavy rain and rough seas that limit water activities.

The Safari Packing Philosophy

The same safari packing rules that apply in Kenya apply in Tanzania. Neutral earth tones only. No bright colors and no white that disturbs wildlife. No blue that attracts tsetse flies. Layers for the dramatic temperature swing between cold dawn game drives and warm midday.

Bush flight weight limits in Tanzania are equally strict. The 15 kilogram soft bag limit applies on most circuits connecting Kilimanjaro airport, the Serengeti airstrips, and the Zanzibar airport. Pack in a soft duffel rather than a hard case.

The Layering System for Tanzania

Base Layer

The Roman Trail Women's Merino Wool Base Layer ($49-59) is the essential foundation for Tanzania across all three of its main experiences. On Serengeti safari it manages the temperature swing between cold dawn and warm midday while keeping you fresh through multiple days of dusty game drives. At the Ngorongoro Crater where mornings are genuinely cold it works as a warm base under everything else. On Zanzibar it handles tropical heat better than cotton without holding odor.

Bring two in neutral earth tones for safari. They handle a two-week Tanzania itinerary without needing to wash more than once.

Mid Layer

The Ngorongoro Crater's cold mornings and the Serengeti's pre-dawn game drive departures make a mid layer non-negotiable. A fleece jacket in a neutral color handles Crater mornings and Serengeti dawn departures without adding meaningful weight. For the Ngorongoro highlands and the high altitude camps on the crater rim the packable insulated jacket ($279) provides serious warmth that the altitude demands.

For Zanzibar in dry season you will not need a mid layer during the day.

Rain Shell

The Marmot Women's PreCip Eco Rain Jacket ($110) handles Tanzania's short and long rainy seasons and the unpredictable afternoon storms that can hit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro at any time of year. It doubles as a wind layer on open vehicle game drives where movement creates significant wind chill in the early morning hours.

Insect and Health Protection

Tanzania requires the same serious health protection as Kenya. Sawyer Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent ($16) on clothing before departure and DEET Insect Repellent Spray ($12) on exposed skin provide the layered protection that Tanzania's malaria-endemic areas require. Malaria prophylaxis prescribed before departure is essential for all Tanzania travel below 2,000 meters including the Serengeti, Zanzibar, and the southern parks.

The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter ($20) provides water safety backup particularly on longer game drives and in remote southern Tanzania camps where bottled water supply can be inconsistent.

Footwear for Tanzania

Tanzania's footwear demands mirror Kenya's with one additional consideration. The Ngorongoro Crater descent is steep and rocky in sections and requires footwear with real grip. The Merrell Women's Moab 3 Waterproof Hiking Boot ($140) handles Tanzanian safari camp conditions and Crater rim walks reliably.

For Zanzibar sandals are the primary footwear for beach days and Stone Town exploring. Stone Town's narrow alleyways are flat and comfortable in sandals.

Bring one pair of sandals for Zanzibar and coast use. Two pairs total.

For socks, merino wool hiking socks handle safari camp walking without blisters and stay fresh through multiple days of wear.

Clothing List

Tops

Two merino wool base layer tops in neutral earth tones for safari. One lightweight top for Zanzibar and beach use. One long sleeve layer for cold Crater mornings and evening camp use.

Bottoms

Two pairs of quick-dry safari pants in neutral colors. One lightweight skirt or casual pants for Zanzibar and Stone Town. One pair of shorts for beach days.

Layers

One fleece mid layer in neutral color for cold game drives and Crater mornings. One down jacket for Ngorongoro highlands. One packable rain shell for all safari regions.

Footwear

One pair of waterproof hiking boots for safari camp, Crater descents, and bush walks. One pair of sandals for Zanzibar and coast use. Three pairs of merino wool socks. One to two pairs of casual socks.

Health and Safety

Sawyer Permethrin clothing treatment applied before packing. DEET insect repellent spray. LifeStraw water filter. Antimalarial medication prescribed before departure. Yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Accessories

Wide brim sun hat for open vehicle game drives. Sunscreen SPF 50. Sunglasses with UV protection. A buff for dust on game drives. A packable daypack for day trips and Zanzibar exploring. A lightweight scarf for Stone Town mosque visits and modest dress in conservative areas.

Documents and Essentials

Valid passport with at least six months validity. Tanzania e-visa obtained in advance at eservices.immigration.go.tz. Yellow fever vaccination certificate required. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage. Tanzania shillings and US dollars cash since both are widely accepted. An offline map since cell coverage in the Serengeti and southern parks is essentially nonexistent.

What to Leave at Home

Bright colors and blue for safari days. Neutral earth tones only.

Hard sided luggage for bush flight circuits. Soft duffel bags only for inter-camp travel.

Revealing clothing for Stone Town and conservative Zanzibar communities. The island has a significant Muslim population and modest dress covering shoulders and knees is expected in town contexts outside of beach resort areas.

Tanzania by Region

The Serengeti is the cornerstone of the Tanzania safari experience and one of the greatest wildlife ecosystems on earth. The park covers 14,763 square kilometers of savanna, woodland, and kopje rock formations. The wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti from January through March, when hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks, is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the year. The river crossings of the northern Serengeti from July through October when the migration enters from the Maasai Mara are dramatic and unpredictable. Central Serengeti offers year round wildlife viewing with the highest concentrations of predators in Africa.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the most concentrated wildlife experience in Africa. The 260 square kilometer crater floor contains around 25,000 large animals including the highest density of lions on earth, the Big Five, and one of the last populations of black rhino on the continent. The crater is best visited in the early morning before day visitors arrive from the crater rim lodges. The rim lodges themselves at 2,200 meters offer extraordinary views and genuinely cold nights that require serious layering.

Zanzibar is the perfect complement to a Tanzania safari and one of the most beautiful island destinations in the Indian Ocean. Stone Town the old capital is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, carved wooden doorways, and crumbling 19th century Arab-African architecture that earned UNESCO World Heritage status. The beaches of the north and east coasts are extraordinary. The spice farms in the island's interior explain why Zanzibar was the center of the Indian Ocean spice trade for centuries.

The Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park in southern Tanzania are the alternatives for travelers seeking a less visited experience. The Selous is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Ruaha has the highest concentration of lions in the world and a remote character that the northern circuit cannot match. Both require more planning and longer travel times but reward serious safari travelers with experiences unavailable in the more tourist-heavy north.

Solo women safety assessment: Tanzania's northern safari circuit is well established and safe for solo women when booked through reputable operators, since camps and lodges are secure and guides are experienced. The real risks are urban: Dar es Salaam and Arusha city centers require standard city awareness around petty theft, and Zanzibar's Stone Town requires modest dress and caution walking alone after dark in narrow, poorly lit alleys. Avoid unlicensed taxis, always confirm a driver or guide against your booking confirmation, and keep valuables in a hotel safe rather than carrying them on beach days.

Tanzania Packing FAQ

Is Tanzania safe for solo women travelers?

Tanzania is generally safe for solo women travelers with appropriate preparation. Safari camps and lodges are extremely secure environments. Zanzibar requires modest dress in town contexts and standard awareness in nightlife areas. Dar es Salaam requires the same urban awareness as any major African city. The northern safari circuit between Arusha, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro is well-established and safe for independent travelers using reputable operators.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania. The Tanzania e-visa is available at eservices.immigration.go.tz and must be obtained before arrival. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry.

What is the best time to visit the Serengeti?

January through March for the calving season in the southern Serengeti. June through October for the northern Serengeti and the migration's crossing into Kenya and back. There is no bad time to visit the Serengeti since wildlife is present year round but the dry seasons from June through October and January through February offer the best game viewing conditions.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro without technical climbing experience?

Yes. Kilimanjaro is a high altitude trek not a technical climb on the standard routes. No ropes, ice axes, or climbing experience required. What it does require is excellent physical condition, proper acclimatization time using a longer route like the Lemosho or Machame, and cold weather gear for summit night when temperatures can drop well below freezing. Success rates are significantly higher on seven and eight day routes versus shorter five day routes.

Is it safe to swim in Zanzibar?

Yes on the north and east coast beaches which have calm protected water and excellent visibility for snorkeling. The west coast including Stone Town has strong currents and tidal variations that make swimming inadvisable in many areas. Check local conditions before swimming anywhere on the island.
