Packing List for Newport, Rhode Island: What Women Should Bring

Newport, Rhode Island, is a seaside city on Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay, famous for its Gilded Age mansions, its sailing and its rocky Atlantic shore. Wikipedia places it about 33 miles south east of Providence, 74 miles south of Boston and 180 miles north east of New York City, and it has been a New England summer resort for a very long time. The packing list here is about sea wind, damp air and a lot of walking on stone, gravel and old brick.

This is the Newport in Rhode Island, and not one of its namesakes. The working fishing port on the Pacific coast has its own Newport, Oregon packing list, and the Newport that is the county town of the Isle of Wight sits inside our Isle of Wight packing list. There is also a Newport in Wales. Everything below is about the city on Narragansett Bay.

The photograph at the top of this page shows one building, and only that. It is the stone facade and terraces of The Breakers, the Vanderbilt summer house, on a clear spring day. It cannot show the Cliff Walk below the lawn, the harbour, the colonial old town, Touro Synagogue, Marble House, Rosecliff and the other mansions, Ocean Drive, or Fort Adams where the festivals are held.

What Is Here

Newport is far older than its mansions. It was founded in 1639, and in 1658 a group of Jewish families fleeing the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal was welcomed to settle here. It grew rich as a colonial port, and part of that wealth came from the slave trade: Wikipedia records that in 1764 Rhode Island had about 30 rum distilleries, 22 of them in Newport, feeding the triangle trade with the Caribbean and West Africa. The old town around Thames Street and the harbour still holds many buildings from that era.

Touro Synagogue is the building to see in the old town. It was built in 1763 to a design by Peter Harrison. Wikipedia's article describes it as the only surviving synagogue building in the United States from the colonial era, and so the oldest synagogue building still standing in the country. In August 1790 George Washington visited Newport, and his letter to the congregation promised a government that "gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance"; the congregation still reads it aloud every year. It is an affiliated area of the National Park Service and an active Orthodox synagogue, so dress modestly and check visiting times.

The mansions came at the end of the nineteenth century, when the Vanderbilts, the Astors and other very rich families spent a short summer season here in houses they called cottages, a world Edith Wharton described in The Age of Innocence. The Breakers, in the photograph, was built between 1893 and 1895 for Cornelius Vanderbilt II after the earlier house on the site burned down in 1892. Richard Morris Hunt designed its 70 rooms in the Renaissance Revival style, on a 14-acre estate on the cliffs above Easton Bay. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1994 and is open all year; Wikipedia's article says that as of 2017 it was the most visited attraction in Rhode Island, with about 450,000 visitors a year, so arrive early in summer.

Marble House and Rosecliff are the two to add. Marble House, built from 1888 to 1892 for Alva and William K. Vanderbilt, has a Chinese Tea House on the seaside cliff where Alva later hosted rallies for women's suffrage. Rosecliff, built from 1898 to 1902 for the silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs, was modelled by Stanford White on the Grand Trianon at Versailles. Wikivoyage suggests allowing about an hour and a half per house, and the Preservation Society of Newport County publishes current tickets and opening times.

The Cliff Walk is the free half of the mansions. It is a public path of about 3.5 miles, roughly 5.6 kilometres, along the shore between First Beach, also called Easton's Beach, and Bailey's Beach, with views of The Breakers, Marble House, Rough Point and the ocean. Wikipedia notes it was the first National Recreation Trail in New England, and Wikivoyage describes the Forty Steps, a staircase down towards the water on the way.

On the water, Newport hosted every America's Cup race from 1930 to 1983, it is the start of the Newport Bermuda Race, and it is sometimes called the "Sailing Capital of the World". Ocean Drive, laid out largely to Frederick Law Olmsted's landscape design and a National Historic Landmark District since 1976, runs along the southern shore past Brenton Point State Park to Fort Adams; Wikivoyage calls it a 10-mile drive.

The Newport Jazz Festival began in 1954 and the Newport Folk Festival in 1959, and both are now held at Fort Adams State Park. The jazz festival is held in August, the folk festival is often held in the same month, and the folk festival is where Bob Dylan played his famous electric set in July 1965. Dates are at Newport Jazz and Newport Folk.

The Weather Off the Bay

The local long-run figures are the 1991 to 2020 normals for Rose Island Light, in the harbour. January averages a high of 38.6 Fahrenheit, about 4 Celsius, and a low of 23.9, about minus 4. July averages 77.4 Fahrenheit by day, about 25 Celsius, and 64.3 at night, about 18. October runs 62.7 by day and 49.1 at night, about 17 and 9. Rain, about 47 inches or 1,200 millimetres a year, comes in every month. Evenings on the harbour cool quickly.

Winter is raw rather than deep. The normals give about 26 inches of snow a season, around 66 centimetres, with February the snowiest month, and the lowest temperature in the station's record is minus 9 Fahrenheit, about minus 23 Celsius. The UK Foreign Office warns that snowstorms in the United States can cause power cuts and delays and cancellations at transport hubs, so leave a spare day in January and February.

Hurricane season matters here. The UK Foreign Office says the Atlantic hurricane season normally runs from June to November. The Cliff Walk itself is the record of it: the 1938 New England hurricane, Hurricane Carol in 1954 and Hurricane Bob in 1991 all damaged it, and in October 2012 the storm surge from Sandy washed away large sections and kept it closed until June 2014. In late summer and autumn, follow the National Hurricane Center before you travel.

A city where a warm July afternoon on the harbour and a wet February wind share the same waterfront is the case for wool next to the skin. A merino wool base layer for women handles a long summer day on the Cliff Walk without clinging or smelling, and keeps you warm under a coat on a cold December wharf.

What to Wear on the Cliffs and the Harbour

Dress in layers you can take off and put back on quickly. The Cliff Walk is fully exposed to the ocean, the mansion lawns are open to the wind, and the end of a wharf can feel colder than a sheltered street. Over the base layer, a Columbia fleece jacket as a mid layer is the piece you will put on and take off all day from April to October, and a packable rain jacket covers the showers, the sea fog and the spray on a harbour sail.

Your shoes decide whether you finish the Cliff Walk. Wikivoyage says about two thirds of the path is easy walking for all ages, but that the path is not fully paved, some stretches drop steeply to the water and the rocks can be slippery. Wear a shoe with real grip, not sandals and not smooth soled flats. A trail shoe such as the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX hiking shoes handles the rough stretches and stays dry in spray, and Darn Tough merino hiker socks keep your feet comfortable over the two to four hours Wikivoyage says most people take. Long trousers help too, because Wikivoyage also warns about poison ivy along the path.

On a boat or a festival lawn, pack for sun and wind together. Out on the bay the wind can be stronger than on Thames Street, even in July, and a festival day at Fort Adams means hours on an open lawn by the water. A wide brim sun hat with a UPF 50 rating, tied on, is the right thing for both. Pack sunscreen and sunglasses for the glare off the water; they are unlinked because our registry holds no sunscreen and no eyewear.

The Winter Bag, November to March

Pack for a damp, windy coast rather than for deep snow. An insulated hooded jacket over the base layer and fleece covers most winter days, and the hood earns its place when the wind comes off the bay. A merino beanie and merino glove liners are both in our registry and worth packing, but we have not linked them because the six-link cap for this page is full, and the grippy shoes for the Cliff Walk matter more here. Wear waterproof shoes with tread if snow or freezing rain is forecast.

Getting There and Getting Around

Newport is an island city, reached over a bridge or by water. The Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge, a toll bridge, is one of three road bridges onto Aquidneck Island. The nearest airport, T.F. Green in Warwick, is about 45 minutes away by Wikivoyage's estimate, and Boston Logan about an hour and 35 minutes. RIPTA, the state bus service, runs an express bus from Providence, and Wikivoyage lists summer ferries from Providence and Block Island.

Downtown and the harbour are easy on foot, and Wikivoyage notes that parking can be hard at busy times. The Cliff Walk has several exits, all leading back up to Bellevue Avenue, so you need not walk the whole thing. If you drive, check roads and closures with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.

Is Newport Safe for Women Travelers

Newport is a busy, well-kept tourist city and an easy place to visit alone. The UK Foreign Office names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States, says violent crime and gun crime rarely affect tourists, and advises taking care in unfamiliar areas and not walking through quieter areas alone at night. It also says not to leave passports in a rental car, especially in the boot, and to carry a passport showing your permission to be in the US. The legal age for buying and drinking alcohol is 21 nationally, so carry ID to the bars on Thames Street. Wikivoyage notes a higher than average crime rate but calls the city generally very safe.

The real risk is the Cliff Walk. Wikivoyage says that while crime there is virtually unheard of, more than a few people have been injured, some seriously, after leaving the path, and its advice is simply to stay on it. Sections have been lost before: Wikipedia records that on 3 March 2022 a 20-foot section, about 6 metres, collapsed near Webster Street and Narragansett Avenue. Parts of the path may be closed at any time, so check the current status with the City of Newport before you set out, keep off the rocks in a heavy swell, and do not walk it in the dark.

The Newport Packing List

  • A merino base layer, the one piece that works on every visit here.
  • A fleece mid layer and a packable rain jacket, from April to October.
  • Grippy trail shoes for the Cliff Walk, merino socks, and long trousers against poison ivy.
  • June to September: breathable clothes and a sun hat you can tie on for sailing and festivals.
  • November to March: an insulated hooded jacket and waterproof shoes with tread.
  • A beanie and glove liners, in our registry and unlinked only because the six-link cap was full.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses, unlinked because our registry holds no sunscreen and no eyewear.
  • Your passport or photo ID, and a phone that receives weather alerts.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a city where a summer day on the cliffs and a raw winter wind off the bay share the same shore is the case the fibre was chosen for.

Essential Resources for Women in Newport

Emergency numbers: 911 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile. Calls are answered locally and dispatchers will stay on the line. For non-urgent police matters many cities also run a 311 information line.

Main hospital or clinic: Newport Hospital, a nonprofit hospital in the city founded in 1873 and part of the Brown University Health system, provides emergency care and is the hospital for the island. For a sprain, a cut or a bad cold, an urgent care clinic is the right and much cheaper door; for anything serious, call 911.

This is the single biggest practical difference for a visitor: there is no public health system, an emergency room visit without insurance can run into thousands of dollars, and an ambulance is billed separately and is not free. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is not optional in the United States, and you should carry your policy number and the insurer's 24 hour number somewhere you can reach them. Urgent care clinics handle anything short of an emergency far more cheaply and quickly than an emergency room, and are the right choice for a sprain, an infection or stitches.

Tourist police: the United States has no tourist police. City police cover Newport, and 911 reaches them.

US State Department travel advisory: there is none, and this is not an omission. The State Department issues travel advisories for other countries, not for the United States itself, so no US advisory for this destination exists to link. In its place, the Government of Canada advice for the United States gives an equivalent third-country assessment.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits. The FCDO names no advised-against areas anywhere in the United States. The same advice also covers Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Official health authority: the CDC travellers' health pages, the US federal health authority for visitors.

Embassy contact: the United States is the host country, so there is no US embassy to contact. Your own country's embassy is in Washington DC, with consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Miami and Boston. Find yours before you travel and save the number.

Official tourism authority: Brand USA, the national tourism marketing body, covers the country; for the city, Discover Newport runs the visitor centre and Visit Rhode Island covers the state, the National Weather Service issues storm, wind and coastal flood warnings, and the City of Newport is the place to check the Cliff Walk.

Solo women travellers. Newport is a comfortable city to visit alone. Check the weather before going out on the water, and take a taxi back to an out-of-town hotel late at night rather than walking unlit roads.

Reading On

Along the same coast, the Mystic packing list covers the seafaring village in Connecticut, and the Boston packing list and the New York City packing list cover the two big cities either side. Across the water, Montauk covers the far end of Long Island, and our New England fall foliage packing list is the companion for an October trip. Providence and Block Island have no guides here yet, so the United States travel guide is the parent for now. Our guide to merino base layers for women has the fibre reasoning, and the travel packing guide indexes the library.
