Kuta Lombok Packing List for Women: Surf Bays and a New Racetrack

Aerial view of the Mandalika coastline near Kuta, Lombok, Indonesia

Kuta on the south coast of Lombok is not Kuta in Bali, and the confusion is worth clearing up before anything else because the two are entirely different places with the same name. Balinese Kuta is a dense resort strip. Lombok's Kuta is a village on a coast of separated white sand bays, each in its own headland, with reef breaks offshore and hills of dry scrub behind.

It is changing fast. The Mandalika project, a government backed tourism zone, built a MotoGP circuit that opened in 2021 a few kilometres away, and hotels and roads have followed. The development has also drawn criticism over land acquisition from local Sasak communities, which is worth knowing rather than ignoring. Pack for a dry, sunny, reef fringed coast and for a place that is still mostly village.

What Makes Kuta Lombok Different to Pack For

Drier and sunnier than Bali

South Lombok sits in a rain shadow and is noticeably drier than Bali or north Lombok. Temperatures run 23°C to 32°C year round. The wet season from November to March brings rain in short afternoon bursts rather than days of it, and the dry season from April to October is genuinely dry, with brown hills by September.

A merino wool base layer for women is not obvious kit for a tropical beach and earns its place for the same reason it does everywhere humid: it handles days of sweat without turning, which matters where laundry is slow.

The beaches are reef, not sand shelf

Most of the bays have reef or rock at the entry and shallow coral inside. Water shoes are close to essential rather than optional, and the surf breaks are over reef, which changes the injury profile completely from a beach break.

Everything is spread out and you will ride a scooter

The bays are separated by headlands and the roads between them are narrow, sometimes rough, and the distances are a few kilometres each. Scooters are how everyone moves, and they are also the single most likely thing to hurt you here.

The Kuta Lombok Packing List

Footwear

Reef shoes, flip flops and something closed. The reef shoes are the important one: the entries at Tanjung Aan, Mawun and most of the surf spots are coral and rock, sea urchins are common, and coral cuts infect fast in the tropics.

For Bukit Merese, the Selong Belanak hills or anything inland, waterproof hiking shoes are useful mainly for the sharp dry ground and the thorny scrub.

Clothing

Light, quick drying, and covering for the villages. Lombok is predominantly Muslim and considerably more conservative than Bali: swimwear on the beach is fine, walking through a village in a bikini is not, and a sarong or light cover up should live in your bag. During Ramadan, eating and drinking publicly in daylight is best avoided out of courtesy.

A rash vest for surfing, sun and reef all at once.

For the water

A rash vest or shorty. Reef safe sunscreen, since the coral here is under pressure already. Your own mask if snorkelling matters to you. A dry bag for boat trips to the southern islands.

For sun

A wide brim sun hat, high factor sunscreen reapplied constantly, and sunglasses. The south coast is exposed with little natural shade, and the dry season sun is fierce.

Practical

Cash, since ATMs exist in Kuta village but run out and many warungs are cash only. A helmet, which rental places should provide and often do not offer unprompted; insist. A packable rain jacket for the wet months. Mosquito repellent, since dengue is present.

What to Wear at Key Sites

The bays

Tanjung Aan is the wide horseshoe with two different sands, one fine and one like peppercorns. Mawun is a deep bay between headlands. Selong Belanak has the gentlest beach break and is where every surf school takes beginners. Are Guling and Mawi are quieter and rougher.

Practically: most have no lifeguards, and Mawun in particular has a strong undertow that has caught people out. Reef shoes for the entries. Local vendors and parking attendants operate at each; a small fee is normal.

Bukit Merese

A grass headland beside Tanjung Aan with a short climb to a ridge and one of the best sunset views in Indonesia, over the bays in both directions.

Practically: ten to fifteen minutes uphill on grass and dirt that is slippery when wet. Exposed and windy. It gets busy at sunset and the walk down is in fading light, so a torch.

Surfing

Beginners go to Selong Belanak, which is sand. Everything else, Gerupuk, Mawi, Ekas, Are Guling, is reef, reached by boat in several cases, and the reef is shallow at low tide.

Practically: reef cuts are the standard Lombok souvenir, so a rash vest and reef booties, and clean any cut immediately and properly. Gerupuk has breaks that work at different tides and is the most beginner friendly of the reef spots.

Sasak villages and the interior

Sade and Ende are traditional Sasak villages that receive visitors, with thatched rice barns and houses whose floors are traditionally sealed with buffalo dung. Inland, the Benang Stokel waterfalls and the slopes of Rinjani are a couple of hours north.

Practically: the villages charge a donation and assign a guide, and the visit is fairly commercialised. Cover shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people in their homes.

The Mandalika circuit and the development

The MotoGP circuit hosts a round most years and the town fills completely for it. The wider Mandalika zone is under construction along much of this coast.

Practically: accommodation prices multiply during race week and book out months ahead. Outside it, construction traffic on the coast road is a real hazard for scooters.

What Not to Bring

Leave the assumption that this is Bali's Kuta, which it is not. Leave bare feet for the reef. Leave swimwear as village clothing.

Leave a scooter ride without a helmet, and leave chemical sunscreen for a coast whose reef is already stressed.

Essential Resources for Women in Kuta Lombok

Emergency numbers in Indonesia: 112 is the national emergency number. Police 110, ambulance 118 or 119, fire 113. Response on the south coast is slow and your accommodation is the practical first call.

Tourist support: Indonesia operates a tourist information line on 1500 015. There is a police post in Kuta and a larger station at Praya. A stolen passport needs a police report before the embassy can issue a replacement.

US Embassy and consulate: the embassy is in Jakarta at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan 3-5, telephone +62 21 5083 1000, at id.usembassy.gov. The nearest consular presence is the consular agency in Bali, a short flight or a ferry away. Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before you travel.

Main hospital or clinic: there are clinics in Kuta handling surf injuries and scooter road rash, which is most of their work. The hospitals are at Praya, around forty minutes, and Mataram, around ninety. Serious cases go to Bali. There is no hyperbaric chamber on Lombok. Travel insurance covering surfing and motorcycle use is essential, and note that many policies void motorcycle claims if you do not hold a valid licence for one, which most visitors riding scooters here do not.

Official health authority: the Indonesian Ministry of Health at kemkes.go.id.

US State Department travel advisory for Indonesia: current advisory level and detail. Read it directly rather than relying on this page.

UK FCDO travel advice for Indonesia: entry requirements, safety and health guidance.

Official tourism authority: Wonderful Indonesia at indonesia.travel. Lombok sits beside Rinjani, an active volcano, and PVMBG publishes its status; that matters if you are combining the trek with the coast.

Solo women safety assessment: Kuta Lombok is generally comfortable for a woman travelling alone and the surf and yoga community here is international, friendly and used to solo travellers. Violent crime against visitors is rare, guesthouses are family run, and eating alone is unremarkable. The village is small enough to feel known within a couple of days. Lombok is more conservative than Bali and dressing covered away from the beach makes a noticeable difference to how comfortable the interactions are. Two specific cautions. Petty theft from rooms and from scooters is common, and the beaches have a persistent problem with bags going while people are in the water, so take nothing to the sand you would mind losing. And the beaches outside the village are isolated: several of the bays have no one on them outside peak hours, and women have reported being followed or harassed at the quieter spots, so go with someone to the empty bays and avoid them near dusk. Beyond people, the practical dangers are the scooter and the sea. Road accidents are by a wide margin the most likely serious injury here: the roads are poor, construction traffic is heavy, and many riders have no licence and no insurance cover as a result. Wear a helmet. In the water, reef cuts infect quickly and must be cleaned properly, Mawun has a strong undertow, and there are no lifeguards anywhere on this coast.
