Ischia Packing List for Women: A Volcanic Island People Actually Live On

The Aragonese Castle at sunset on Ischia, Italy

Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples, six times the size of Capri, and roughly sixty thousand people live on it year round. That is the essential difference. Capri is a day trip with a population that empties; Ischia has towns, schools, farms, vineyards and a genuine local life that continues in February. It is volcanic, part of the same system as Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei, and the heat is still close to the surface: thermal springs come out of the ground at up to 90°C and the island has built an entire economy on them.

The Aragonese Castle on its own islet is the landmark, Monte Epomeo at 789 metres is the high point, and the thermal parks are what most visitors actually come for. Pack for water, for a volcanic coastline that is rock rather than sand in most places, and for a hill that is steeper than the island looks from the ferry.

What Makes Ischia Different to Pack For

You will be in and out of water constantly

Thermal parks, the sea, and in a few places both at once, since at Sorgeto the hot springs run into the sea and you bathe in the mixing zone. Swimwear is worn most of the day and you will want two sets, because nothing dries fast in Mediterranean humidity and thermal mineral water is hard on fabric.

Sulphur will tarnish silver jewellery, quickly and permanently. Leave it at the hotel.

Volcanic coast, not a sandy one

There are sand beaches, at Maronti and Citara and the Lido, but much of the coast is rock, and the best swimming is often off stone. Reef shoes matter here more than on most Italian islands, and the thermal park pools have rough volcanic edges.

A mild winter and a real off season

Summer runs 23°C to 31°C with humidity. Winter runs 9°C to 16°C, and the thermal parks are the reason people come in November and March when the sea is too cold. Many hotels close from November to Easter.

A merino wool base layer for women covers the shoulder seasons, when an evening on a ferry deck or a hillside village is colder than the daytime suggests.

The Ischia Packing List

Footwear

Three things, and all three earn their place. Sandals for the towns, reef shoes for the rock entries and the thermal pools, and something closed with grip for Monte Epomeo and the footpaths. If you plan to walk the island seriously, and the network of old mule tracks is excellent, waterproof hiking shoes handle the loose volcanic tuff, which crumbles and rolls underfoot.

Clothing

Light, quick drying, and two swimsuits. A cover up for moving between pool and restaurant at the thermal parks. Covered shoulders and knees for the churches, including the Santuario del Soccorso at Forio and the church inside the Aragonese Castle.

Ischia is relaxed and Italian rather than glamorous, and it dresses more like a normal seaside town than Capri does.

For the thermal parks

A quick drying towel, though the parks rent or sell them. A waterproof bag for wet things. Flip flops for the walkways, which are hot underfoot. Hair tie, and something to protect hair from sulphur if you care, because the smell lingers.

For sun

A wide brim sun hat, high factor sunscreen and a refillable bottle. The thermal parks are terraced hillsides with limited shade and people underestimate the exposure because they are in water. Tap water is drinkable.

For the shoulder months

A packable rain jacket from October to April, and a windproof layer for the ferry, which is open on the upper deck and cold in any season once it moves.

What to Wear at Key Sites

The Castello Aragonese

A castle on a rock islet joined to Ischia Ponte by a causeway, occupied since 474 BC, with a convent, a cathedral ruined by British shelling in 1809, and the Clarisse cemetery where dead nuns were seated on stone drainage chairs while the living prayed beside them.

Practically: a lift covers the first section and the rest is a long climb on stone ramps and stairs, mostly unshaded, with terraces that have drops. Allow two hours. Covered shoulders and knees for the church.

The thermal parks

Poseidon at Citara is the largest, with around twenty pools at different temperatures on a terraced hillside. Negombo at Lacco Ameno is smaller and more beautifully planted. Both have private beaches attached.

Practically: full day places. Bring what you would take to a spa. The hottest pools are genuinely hot and the signs giving temperatures are accurate; work up rather than jumping in.

Coastal architecture above the calm sea on Ischia, Italy

Monte Epomeo

789 metres, the island's summit, a resurgent block pushed up by magma rather than a crater. The usual route starts from Fontana and takes around an hour, ending in a passage carved through soft tuff to a hermitage and a summit rock.

Practically: the final section is cut steps in crumbling tuff, steep and slippery with loose grit, and there are drops without protection. Not a sandals walk. Go early, take water, and the view covers the whole bay.

Sorgeto and the beaches

At Sorgeto, thermal water enters the sea among the rocks in a cove reached by around 230 steps, and you sit in the hot zone with cold sea beside you. Maronti is the long sand beach, Citara has the sunsets.

Practically: Sorgeto is steps down and the same steps back up, the rocks are sharp and hot in places, and reef shoes are close to essential. It is free, it is open at night, and it is at its best in winter.

The villages

Sant'Angelo is a car free fishing village on an isthmus at the southern tip. Forio has the Giardini La Mortella, a garden created by the wife of the composer William Walton. Ischia Ponte is the old town below the castle.

What Not to Bring

Leave silver jewellery, which the sulphur ruins. Leave a single swimsuit. Leave a large wheeled suitcase, since the villages are stepped and Sant'Angelo has no cars at all.

Leave the expectation of Capri. Ischia is bigger, cheaper, less polished and considerably more livable, which is the point of it.

Essential Resources for Women in Ischia

Emergency numbers in Italy: 112 is the single European emergency number and the main line in Italy. Police 113, ambulance 118, fire 115. The coastguard is 1530, which is the relevant number for anything at sea.

Tourist support: Italy has no separate tourist police. The Carabinieri and the Polizia di Stato have stations on the island and take reports from visitors. A stolen passport needs a written denuncia filed in person before the consulate can act.

US Embassy and consulate: the embassy is in Rome at Via Vittorio Veneto 121, telephone +39 06 46741, at it.usembassy.gov. The relevant office is the US Consulate General in Naples at Piazza della Repubblica, which is a ferry ride away and makes Ischia one of the easier Italian islands for consular help. Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before you travel.

Main hospital or clinic: the Ospedale Anna Rizzoli at Lacco Ameno is the island hospital with an emergency department, and serious cases transfer to Naples by ferry or helicopter. EU visitors should carry the European Health Insurance Card; everyone else needs travel insurance, since Italy treats in an emergency and then bills a non resident.

Official health authority: the Italian Ministry of Health at salute.gov.it.

US State Department travel advisory for Italy: current advisory level and detail. Read it directly rather than relying on this page.

UK FCDO travel advice for Italy: entry requirements, safety and health guidance.

Official tourism authority: ENIT, the Italian national tourist board, at italia.it, with the Campania regional board at incampania.com for ferry timetables, thermal park opening and seasonal closures, which matter here because much of the island shuts in winter.

Solo women safety assessment: Ischia is a comfortable and safe island for a woman travelling alone, and noticeably easier than Naples on the mainland. It is a genuine community rather than a resort strip, the towns are small, people know each other, and the atmosphere is family oriented and unpressured. Violent crime against visitors is rare, eating alone is unremarkable, and walking in the villages after dark is fine. Petty theft is at a low level, concentrated on the ferries and at the port at Ischia Porto during the summer crush, and handled by a closed bag worn in front. Expect a degree of friendly attention, particularly in the smaller villages, which is generally warm rather than intrusive. The practical risks here are water and terrain. The thermal pools are genuinely hot, some above 40°C, and fainting, dehydration and overheating are the most common medical problems on the island; drink water, do not go in after alcohol, and work up through the temperatures rather than starting at the top. At Sorgeto the mixing of near boiling spring water and cold sea creates pockets that can scald, and the rocks are slippery and sharp. Swimming off rock is the other issue, since much of the coast is unpatrolled with sudden depth. On land, the Monte Epomeo summit steps are crumbling tuff with unprotected drops and cause regular falls. Ferries stop in bad weather, sometimes for a day, so build slack before a flight from Naples.
