Capri Packing List for Women: A Vertical Island With a Dress Code

Aerial view of Capri island and the Mediterranean coast, Italy

Capri is four square miles of limestone that rises almost straight out of the sea, and the single most useful thing to know before packing is that nothing on it is flat. The ferry lands at Marina Grande at sea level. Capri town sits about 140 metres above it. Anacapri is higher again at around 280, and Monte Solaro tops out at 589. You move between those levels by funicular, by bus on a road with hairpins and sheer drops, or by a great many steps.

The second thing is the split personality. Capri is a serious walking island with clifftop paths, Roman ruins and a mountain chairlift, and it is also the most self consciously stylish square mile in Italy, where the evening in the Piazzetta is a dress up occasion and the Via Camerelle is wall to wall luxury shopfronts. Packing for one and not the other is the standard mistake, and it goes wrong in both directions.

What Makes Capri Different to Pack For

The season is short and the island empties

Capri runs roughly Easter to October. In July and August it is hot at 28°C to 32°C, extremely crowded with day trippers off the Naples and Sorrento ferries, and expensive. May, June, September and early October are the good months. From November to March much of the island closes, some hotels and restaurants shut entirely, and the sea can cancel ferries for days at a time.

Sea state governs everything

Ferries and hydrofoils are cancelled in rough weather, and the Blue Grotto closes whenever swell makes the entrance unsafe, which is often. Do not book a same day onward flight out of Naples on the assumption that the afternoon ferry will run. Build in a night of slack, especially outside high summer.

Two wardrobes, one small bag

Days are walking days: sun, stone paths, some exposure. Evenings in the Piazzetta are dressed. A merino wool base layer for women is the item that bridges both, since it works under a light dress on a cool evening and handles a hot uphill walk without holding odour, which matters on an island where laundry is expensive and rooms are small.

The Capri Packing List

Luggage, which is a real constraint here

Pack light and pack soft. Porters at Marina Grande charge per bag, the funicular is crowded, many hotels are up stepped lanes no vehicle reaches, and the island's little taxis have limited boot space. A large hard case is a genuine problem on Capri in a way it is not in Rome.

Footwear

Two pairs solve the island. Grippy flat walking shoes for the paths, and one pair of smarter flats or low wedges for the evening. Heels on Capri's stone lanes are a local sport but a visitor's injury, and the Via Krupp and the Pizzolungo are proper paths. If you intend the Monte Solaro descent or the Sentiero dei Fortini, bring waterproof hiking shoes rather than trainers, because the limestone is polished and slick.

Sun protection, which is not optional

The clifftop paths have no shade at all, the sea reflects, and the limestone reflects again. A wide brim sun hat, sunglasses and high factor sunscreen. Carry water, since there are long stretches with nowhere to buy it and island prices are steep.

Swimming

Capri has almost no sand. Swimming is off rock platforms and lido decks at Marina Piccola, Bagni di Tiberio and the Faraglioni, which means entering the water on sharp rock. Water shoes are genuinely useful here, along with a quick drying towel. The sea is around 25°C in August and cool but swimmable in May and October.

For the evening

One outfit that works in the Piazzetta. Nothing formal is required and nobody is turned away from a bar, but Capri dresses, and linen, a simple dress and decent flats will not feel out of place. Bring a light wrap: the island cools after dark, the evening breeze at that altitude is real, and many of the good restaurants are on open terraces.

What to Wear at Key Sites

The Blue Grotto

You transfer from a larger boat into a small rowing boat and lie flat while the oarsman pulls through an entrance barely a metre high. Practically: you will get splashed, your bag will be on the floor of a wet boat, and the whole visit inside lasts a few minutes. Wear something that can get wet, put the phone in a sealed bag, and check before travelling out that it is open, because swell closes it without notice.

Villa Jovis and the clifftop paths

Tiberius built twelve villas on Capri, and Villa Jovis on the northeast headland is the ruin that survives, reached by a steady forty five minute uphill walk from Capri town on a paved lane. It ends at the Salto di Tiberio, a 300 metre drop. The Arco Naturale, the Grotta di Matermania and the Pizzolungo loop back from near there and involve a long stepped descent.

Practically: unshaded, steep, and stepped rather than graded, so this is a morning walk with water rather than an afternoon stroll. Knees feel the descent more than the climb.

Anacapri and Monte Solaro

Anacapri is quieter, cheaper and more ordinary in a way that makes it the better base for many people. The single seat chairlift to Monte Solaro takes about twelve minutes and is completely exposed, with a bar across your lap and your feet hanging. It is cooler and windier at the top than in town, so take a layer even in August, and note it does not run in high wind or storms.

Also in Anacapri: Villa San Michele and the Scala Fenicia, the old stepped stair of more than nine hundred steps down to Marina Grande, which is a knee punishing descent and a brutal climb.

The churches

Shoulders and knees covered for the Certosa di San Giacomo and the church of San Michele in Anacapri, which has a majolica tiled floor you walk around on felt overshoes rather than across.

What Not to Bring

Leave the large suitcase, which is the single most common Capri mistake. Leave stiletto heels for the stone lanes. Leave the expectation of a sandy beach, because there essentially is not one. Leave the plan to see the island in a day from a Naples ferry if you can avoid it, since the day trip crowd arrives at eleven and leaves at five and the island is a different, better place outside those hours.

Leave valuables you would mind losing on a wet boat, and leave heavy toiletries, since everything you bring goes up a hill one way or another.

Essential Resources for Women in Capri

Emergency numbers in Italy: 112 is the single European emergency number and the main line. The older numbers still work: police 113, ambulance 118, fire 115. Coastguard for sea emergencies is 1530.

Tourist support: Italy has no separate tourist police, but Capri has a Carabinieri station in Capri town and a municipal police presence, and both handle visitor reports. A stolen passport needs a written denuncia before the consulate can act.

US Embassy and consulate: the embassy is in Rome at Via Vittorio Veneto 121, telephone +39 06 46741, at it.usembassy.gov. The relevant office for Campania is the US Consulate General in Naples, Piazza della Repubblica, which is the ferry plus a short transfer away. Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before you travel.

Main hospital or clinic: the Ospedale Capilupi in Capri town is the island hospital and handles emergencies, with serious cases transferred to Naples by boat or helicopter. That transfer is the reason travel insurance matters here more than on the mainland. Pharmacies are in Capri and Anacapri and rotate night duty.

Official health authority: the Italian Ministry of Health at salute.gov.it.

US State Department travel advisory for Italy: current advisory level and detail. Read it directly rather than relying on this page.

UK FCDO travel advice for Italy: entry requirements, safety and health guidance.

Official tourism authority: ENIT, the Italian national tourist board, at italia.it, with the Capri tourist board at capritourism.com for ferry timetables, Blue Grotto status and the walking route descriptions, all of which are seasonal.

Solo women safety assessment: Capri is a very safe place for a woman travelling alone, and in some ways easier than the mainland it is attached to. It is small, affluent, heavily policed in season, and the crowd is a mix of day trippers and older holidaymakers rather than anything rowdy. Walking back to a hotel through Capri town late is fine, and eating alone is completely normal. Street harassment is minimal compared with Naples an hour away. The genuine risks are environmental rather than criminal, and there are three. Falls come first: polished limestone, long stepped descents and low walls between a path and a considerable drop, all of it worse in the wet, and the clifftop paths have no barrier in places. Second is the sea, which is deep, cold below the surface and has real current around the Faraglioni, so swim from the lidos rather than striking out, and take boat trips with licensed operators. Third is heat and dehydration on the unshaded walks, which catches out people who set off for Villa Jovis at two in the afternoon. Practical notes: the last funicular and the last buses run earlier than you expect, roughly to midnight in high season and much earlier off season, and a taxi is expensive but available. Pickpocketing exists on the crowded ferries and in the Piazzetta at peak hours and is handled by an ordinary closed bag. The one financial risk worth naming is the boat tout at Marina Grande, so agree a price before boarding anything.

Reading On

Capri belongs to a Campania trip rather than standing alone. The Italy travel guide for women is the parent for the whole country, and the Italy packing list for women covers a multi region trip. Next door, the Naples travel guide for women covers the city the ferries leave from and the Amalfi Coast travel guide for women covers the coast opposite, which is the usual pairing. Further afield, the Rome travel guide for women and the Sicily travel guide for women cover the rest of the south. The travel packing guide for women is the parent for all destinations. For why merino works for a hot clifftop walk and a cool terrace dinner in the same day, the best merino wool base layers for women explains the fibre, and the Roman Trail collection is where the tops themselves live.
