Spending one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in the volcanic rainforest of Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda is an experience that changes people in ways that most travel does not. The mountain gorilla, one of the closest relatives of human beings sharing 98.3 percent of our DNA, lives in family groups in the bamboo forests and volcanic slopes of the Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas alive on earth. Meeting a silverback male weighing 200 kilograms who regards you with calm intelligence while his family feeds around him is an encounter that every traveler who has done it describes as the most powerful of their lives.
Beyond the gorillas, Rwanda is a country of extraordinary complexity and remarkable resilience. Kigali, the capital, is consistently rated the cleanest and most orderly city in Africa, a testament to the extraordinary national effort to rebuild from the 1994 genocide. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is one of the most important memorial sites in the world. Lake Kivu on the western border is one of Africa's great lakes with extraordinary views and the resort towns of Gisenyi and Kibuye. The Nyungwe Forest National Park contains chimpanzee trekking, canopy walks, and extraordinary bird life.

Rwanda sits just south of the equator at high altitude and the climate is temperate and remarkably pleasant for a country in tropical Africa.
Kigali sits at 1,567 meters above sea level with temperatures typically ranging from 15 to 27 degrees Celsius year round. The Virunga Mountains where gorilla trekking takes place are higher with the gorilla habitats between 2,500 and 4,000 meters where temperatures are significantly cooler.
Rwanda has two dry seasons. The main dry season from June through September is the most popular time for gorilla trekking with lower rainfall and more stable trail conditions. The short dry season from December through February is the second best period.
The Gorilla Trekking Packing Philosophy
Gorilla trekking has specific packing rules that exist for conservation reasons and must be followed.
Neutral dark colors are required. Khaki, olive, brown, grey, and dark green are the right palette. Avoid bright colors and avoid black since black can be aggressive to gorillas.
Long sleeves and long pants are required regardless of temperature. The forest understory contains stinging nettles, thorny vegetation, and biting insects.
Waterproof layers are essential regardless of season. The volcanic rainforest receives rain frequently and the vegetation is always damp.
The Layering System for Rwanda
Base Layer
The Roman Trail Women's Merino Wool Base Layer ($49-59) is the foundation of the gorilla trekking layering system. At 3,000 meters in the volcanic rainforest in the early morning when trekking begins, the temperature can be genuinely cold. Merino manages the transition from cold morning start to the physical exertion of trekking uphill through dense forest. It stays warm when damp which matters when vegetation is constantly brushing moisture onto your clothing.
Bring two in dark neutral colors and rotate them.
Mid Layer
The Virunga Mountains at gorilla trekking altitude make a substantial mid layer essential. The Columbia Women's Fast Trek II Jacket ($65) in a dark neutral color handles the cold of the early morning forest start. For trekkers who run cold or visiting in the wet season the Columbia insulated hooded jacket ($279) provides the serious warmth that the altitude demands.
Rain Shell
The Marmot Women's PreCip Eco Rain Jacket ($110) is non-negotiable for gorilla trekking in Rwanda in a neutral dark color. It handles the forest rain and the constant drip from vegetation overhead without disturbing the gorillas. It doubles as a wind layer on the exposed volcanic slopes above the treeline.
Insect and Health Protection
Rwanda requires malaria prophylaxis for lower altitude areas including Kigali and the Lake Kivu shore. The Virunga Mountains at gorilla trekking altitude are above the malaria zone. Consult a travel health clinic before departure. DEET Insect Repellent Spray ($12) on exposed skin handles the forest insects during trekking.
Footwear for Rwanda
The Merrell Women's Moab 3 Waterproof Hiking Boot ($140) handles Rwandan gorilla trekking terrain reliably. The waterproofing is essential since the volcanic forest is always wet. The ankle support matters on the steep descent sections. Break them in thoroughly before arrival since new boots on a trek that can last four to eight hours of serious hiking are a recipe for blisters.
For Kigali city exploring and Lake Kivu resort use comfortable sandals handle the flat terrain.
Bring one pair of comfortable sandals for Kigali and Lake Kivu use. Two pairs total.
For socks the Darn Tough Women's Hiker Micro Crew Merino Socks ($28) handle the gorilla trek without blisters and stay warm when wet in the forest. Bring three to four pairs.

Rwanda by Region
Volcanoes National Park is the gateway to the mountain gorilla experience. Ten gorilla families are currently habituated for tourism visits with a maximum of eight visitors per family per day for one hour. The trek to find the gorillas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours. The park also offers golden monkey trekking on the lower bamboo slopes, a beautiful and far less expensive experience.
Kigali is one of the most surprising and moving cities in Africa. The Kigali Genocide Memorial contains the remains of 250,000 genocide victims and a museum that tells the history of the genocide with unflinching honesty. The Inema Arts Center is Rwanda's leading contemporary art gallery. The Kimironko Market is the most authentic market experience in the city.
Lake Kivu on the western border is one of Africa's most beautiful lakes. The blue water with mist hanging over the Congolese hills creates a landscape of extraordinary gentleness. Gisenyi is the most developed resort town with beach clubs and restaurants serving fresh lake fish.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the oldest and most biodiverse forests in Africa. Chimpanzee trekking follows habituated communities through the forest canopy. The canopy walk at 60 meters above the ground is one of the most extraordinary experiences in Rwanda outside of the gorilla encounter.

Solo women safety assessment: Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa for solo women travelers, with Kigali in particular standing out for extremely low crime rates and well maintained, well lit streets that feel comfortable to walk even in the evening. Gorilla trekking itself carries no personal safety risk since you are always accompanied by armed park rangers and trackers throughout the forest. The main practical consideration is altitude and physical exertion rather than crime, so build in a rest day around any high altitude trek if you are not acclimatized, and confirm your travel insurance covers medical evacuation from the volcanic mountain region before you go.

Rwanda Packing FAQ
Is Rwanda safe for solo women travelers?
Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa for solo women travelers. Kigali is extremely safe with very low crime rates. Women travelers consistently report Rwanda as one of the most comfortable African destinations for solo travel.
How do I book a gorilla permit?
Gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person per one-hour encounter and must be booked directly through the Rwanda Development Board at rwandatourism.com or through a licensed tour operator. Book as far in advance as possible, ideally three to six months ahead for peak season visits.
How physically demanding is gorilla trekking?
The difficulty varies enormously depending on where the gorilla family has moved. The easiest encounters involve 30 to 60 minutes of walking on relatively flat terrain. The most demanding involve four to six hours of steep hiking through dense forest at altitude. Porters available at the park entrance can carry your bag and provide physical support.
What is the best time to visit for gorilla trekking?
June through September and December through February for the driest conditions. March through May and October through November are the wet seasons with more difficult trail conditions but fewer visitors.
What camera should I bring for gorilla trekking?
A camera with a zoom lens of at least 200mm since you must stay seven meters from the gorillas. Flash photography is strictly prohibited. A camera that handles low light without flash is essential since the forest canopy filters light significantly.
