Pisa Packing List for Women: There Is a City Behind the Tower

The Leaning Tower and Pisa Cathedral in the Piazza dei Miracoli, Italy

Pisa is the most efficiently consumed city in Italy. Several million people a year arrive at the Piazza dei Miracoli, photograph themselves holding up the tower, spend roughly two hours inside a walled rectangle of grass, and leave for Florence. Almost none of them see the rest of it, which is a compact medieval city on the Arno with one of the oldest universities in Europe, a student population that fills the bars on Via San Martino, and a riverfront that is genuinely beautiful at dusk.

That shapes the packing more than you would expect, because the two Pisas ask for different things. The square is a couple of flat hours in full sun with a dress code and a strict bag rule at the tower. The city is cobbles, a river that funnels wind, and evenings that run late in a way university towns do. If you are only here between trains, pack for the first. If you are staying a night, which is the better decision, pack for both.

What Makes Pisa Different to Pack For

Coastal Tuscany, milder and damper than the hills

Pisa sits ten kilometres from the sea on flat alluvial ground, which makes it milder than Siena or Florence and considerably damper. Summer runs 28°C to 33°C with humidity off the coast. Winter runs 3°C to 12°C with fog off the Arno and real rain, and autumn is the wettest season in the region.

A merino wool base layer for women covers November through March under a coat, and a packable rain jacket earns its place from October to April. The Piazza dei Miracoli has no shelter at all, so a shower there means a wet queue.

The tower has rules that catch people out

No bags of any kind are allowed up the tower, entry is by timed ticket, and children under eight cannot go up at all. There are free lockers at the site but they fill, and the ticket is for a specific slot you cannot move. Book ahead in season, arrive early for the locker, and carry as little as possible that day.

The cathedral enforces a dress code

Shoulders and knees covered, for the Duomo and the Baptistery both. This is a working cathedral and the code is checked at the door. A light scarf in a bag solves it and doubles as sun cover on the square.

Recommended Tours and Experiences

The Pisa Packing List

Footwear

Flat and grippy. The city centre is cobbled and the streets along the Arno are worn stone that gets slick in the wet. The tower stair is 251 to 294 steps depending which count you use, spiral, worn into a groove by centuries of feet, and noticeably tilted, so it is not the place for a smooth sole. Nothing here needs boots.

Clothing

Layers rather than anything heavy. Two merino tops cover a week and handle the swing between a hot square and a cold cathedral interior. Pisa is a student city and dresses more casually than Siena or Florence, but beachwear off the beach still reads badly.

For the square in summer

The Piazza dei Miracoli is a wide lawn with no shade and white marble that reflects hard. A wide brim sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. Tap water is drinkable and there are fountains nearby.

A small bag, deliberately

Because of the tower rule, and because the city is walkable enough that you will not want to carry much. If you are day tripping from Florence or off a cruise call at Livorno, use the left luggage at Pisa Centrale rather than dragging a case across the city.

What to Wear at Key Sites

The tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli

The tower began leaning during construction in the twelfth century because the subsoil is soft alluvial clay, and a stabilisation project between 1993 and 2001 reduced the tilt enough to make it safe without straightening it. The square also holds the Duomo, the Baptistery with its remarkable acoustics, and the Camposanto, the walled cemetery whose frescoes were damaged by fire after Allied shelling in 1944 and have been slowly restored.

Practically: the combined ticket options vary and the tower is priced separately. The Baptistery has a scheduled acoustic demonstration worth timing for. The whole square is flat, which makes it one of the easier major sites in Italy to move around.

The tower climb itself

Around half an hour in total, on a spiral stair with no handrail in places, where the lean makes you feel pushed outward on one side and inward on the other. It is genuinely disorienting rather than difficult. The top is open, exposed and has a low parapet.

Not recommended if you are uneasy with heights, enclosed spiral stairs or vertigo, and the marble is slippery in wet weather.

The city most people miss

Piazza dei Cavalieri, redesigned by Vasari, is the old civic heart and now the Scuola Normale Superiore. Santa Maria della Spina is a tiny Gothic church on the riverbank, moved stone by stone in the nineteenth century when the river threatened it. The Borgo Stretto arcades, the Vettovaglie market square and the riverside walk are where the city actually lives.

Practically: this is a fifteen minute walk from the square and the crowds vanish almost immediately. Evenings here are the reason to stay the night.

The coast and the hills

Marina di Pisa and the Parco di San Rossore are on the sea a short bus ride west, flat and good for cycling, with a pine forest and a long dark sand shoreline. Lucca is half an hour by train and Florence an hour, which is why Pisa makes a better base than its reputation suggests, particularly on price.

What Not to Bring

Leave any bag you intend to carry up the tower, because it will not be allowed. Leave heels for the cobbles. Leave shorts and vest tops for the day you plan to enter the cathedral.

Leave the assumption that two hours is enough. Leave the car outside the centre, which is a camera enforced restricted zone like every Tuscan city, and the fine arrives at your home address months later.

Essential Resources for Women in Pisa

Emergency numbers in Italy: 112 is the single European emergency number and the main line in Italy. The older numbers still work: police 113, ambulance 118, fire 115. Operators on 112 handle English.

Tourist support: Italy has no separate tourist police, but the Polizia di Stato questura in Pisa and the Carabinieri both take reports from visitors. A stolen passport needs a written denuncia before the consulate can act, and it has to be filed in person.

US Embassy and consulate: the embassy is in Rome at Via Vittorio Veneto 121, telephone +39 06 46741, at it.usembassy.gov. The relevant office for Tuscany is the US Consulate General in Florence, Lungarno Amerigo Vespucci 38, an hour away by train. Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before you travel.

Main hospital or clinic: the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Pisana at Cisanello is the university teaching hospital for the province, with a 24 hour pronto soccorso, a few kilometres east of the centre. EU visitors should carry the European Health Insurance Card; everyone else needs travel insurance, since Italy treats in an emergency and then bills a non resident.

Official health authority: the Italian Ministry of Health at salute.gov.it.

US State Department travel advisory for Italy: current advisory level and detail. Read it directly rather than relying on this page.

UK FCDO travel advice for Italy: entry requirements, safety and health guidance.

Official tourism authority: ENIT, the Italian national tourist board, at italia.it, with the Pisa visitor office at turismo.pisa.it for monument tickets, tower slot availability and the current combined ticket options, which change.

Solo women safety assessment: Pisa is a straightforward city for a woman travelling alone. It is small, it has a large student population that keeps the centre alive in the evening, and violent crime against visitors is rare. Eating alone is unremarkable and the riverside and Borgo Stretto are comfortable to walk at night. The realistic risk here is theft, and Pisa has a sharper pickpocketing problem than its size suggests precisely because of the volume of distracted tourists in one square: the Piazza dei Miracoli, the walk from the station up Via Gramsci, and the trains to and from Florence are the three places it happens. A bag worn across the body and closed, nothing in a back pocket, and phone away while taking the obligatory photograph. The area immediately around Pisa Centrale station is noticeably scruffier than the rest of the city and is worth taking a taxi through late at night rather than walking, which is the one piece of local caution worth repeating. Beyond that, the honest hazards are the tower stair, which is steep, spiral and disorienting, and the cobbles in rain. Student nightlife is concentrated around Piazza delle Vettovaglie and is friendly rather than rowdy, with the usual sensible practice around drinks. Note that the airport is a ten minute tram ride from the centre, which makes Pisa one of the easiest arrivals in Italy at any hour.

Pisa is an easy arrival airport and a cheaper base than Florence for the same region. The Italy travel guide for women is the parent for the whole country and covers the regions, the seasons and the trains, and the Italy packing list for women covers a multi region trip. Closest to hand, the Tuscany travel guide for women covers the region, the Florence travel guide for women covers the city an hour east, and the Siena packing list for women covers the hill city south. Further afield, the Cinque Terre travel guide for women covers the coast north and the Genoa packing list for women the port beyond it. The travel packing guide for women is the parent for all destinations. For why merino handles a hot marble square and a cold cathedral in one afternoon, the best merino wool base layers for women explains the fibre, and the Roman Trail collection is where the tops themselves live.
