Packing List for Omis, Croatia: What Women Should Bring

The Cetina river leaving its canyon at Omis, the gorge that brought the pirates their reputation.

Omis is a town of about fifteen thousand people half an hour south of Split, and it exists because of a gap. The CETINA river cuts a limestone canyon inland for dozens of kilometres and comes out here, straight into the Adriatic, with cliffs standing over the town on both sides. The first photograph is that exit. It is the only break in a wall of rock for a long way in either direction, which is why there is a town, a harbour and a history here rather than at any of the identical bays nearby.

AND IT MADE THIS PLACE A PIRATE STATE. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the OMIS PIRATES raided shipping along this coast and then withdrew up the canyon, where a Venetian galley could not follow and a land force could be ambushed from above. Venice mounted expeditions against them and did not settle the matter for a long time. The fortresses above the town, MIRABELA on the rock immediately behind the houses and FORTICA higher up the ridge, are the physical remains of that arrangement, and the climb to either is the best thing you will do here.

What Is Here

MIRABELA IS A FIFTEEN MINUTE CLIMB THROUGH THE OLD TOWN AND IT HAS NO RAILINGS. The path goes up stepped lanes behind the parish church and then onto rock, and the tower at the top has a ladder, a hatch and an open platform with a drop on three sides. The view down onto the red roofs and the river mouth is the one everybody photographs. IT IS ALSO NOT A SAFE PLACE FOR A DISTRACTED PERSON OR A SMALL CHILD: the edges are unfenced in the way that medieval fortifications are, and the limestone is polished and slick when damp.

FORTICA IS THE HARDER AND BETTER ONE, about an hour up a zigzag path with the same lack of handrails and a far bigger view, taking in Brac and Hvar across the channel. Go early: the slope faces south and west and there is no shade on it at all.

THE CANYON IS THE OTHER HALF OF THE DESTINATION AND IT IS A COMMERCIAL ADVENTURE INDUSTRY. Cetina rafting trips run from spring to autumn on a stretch that is gentle rather than extreme, with operators in town; there is canyoning in the side gorges, a zip line across the canyon walls, and some of the best developed sport CLIMBING in Croatia on the cliffs above the town. The second photograph is the harbour under those cliffs.

The harbour at Omis under the cliffs, with the Adriatic on one side and the canyon on the other.

THE BEACH IS LONG, PEBBLE AND UNUSUALLY GOOD FOR A TOWN THIS SIZE. VELIKA PLAZA runs west from the river mouth for over a kilometre with pines behind it, and because the Cetina pushes cold fresh water out at the mouth the sea is cooler here than along the Makarska riviera. The third photograph is the harbour out of season, which is when the town is itself.

AND THE ONE CULTURAL THING TO TIME FOR IS A CHOIR FESTIVAL. Omis hosts the FESTIVAL OF DALMATIAN A CAPPELLA CHOIRS each summer, the oldest and most serious gathering of that tradition, and hearing twenty voices in a stone square without amplification is a different experience from a tourist folklore show. It is in July, it is largely attended by Croatians, and it is free to stand and listen.

When to Go

May, June, September and early October. The town is in a rock amphitheatre that holds heat, so July and August are hot, in the low to mid thirties, and the fortress climbs in that are genuinely unwise after about ten in the morning. The rafting season runs roughly April to October and the water is coldest and fastest in spring.

THE CANYON MAKES ITS OWN WEATHER AND THE RIVER MOUTH IS WINDY. Afternoon breezes funnel down the gorge, which is pleasant on the beach and a factor for climbers, and the autumn rains can raise the Cetina quickly enough to change what the rafting operators will run.

WINTER IS QUIET, GREEN AND MOSTLY SHUT, with the adventure operators closed, the fortresses open and empty, and the bura blowing cold down the coast. The climbing crags are actually at their best in the cooler months, which is why you will see climbers here in February.

The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in Croatia and no country-level warning, and it describes overall crime levels as low with violent incidents rare. Four named risks matter more than that reassurance suggests. Sexual assaults have occurred in taxis, and the FCDO's advice is practical: photograph the taxi's identification, share your ride status, and tell someone which car you are in. Overcharging, where visitors report being presented with inflated bills at certain venues and then threatened for payment. Wildfires through hot dry summers, which the FCDO calls highly dangerous and unpredictable. And LANDMINES AND UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE left from the 1990s war, which still affect Eastern Slavonia, Brod-Posavina County, Karlovac County, areas around Zadar County and the more remote parts of Plitvice Lakes National Park. The rule there is simple and absolute: stay on marked paths and roads, and do not walk into uncleared ground to photograph anything.

Getting There

Fly to Split and take the bus or drive, about half an hour. SPLIT AIRPORT is forty five minutes away, buses along the coast road are frequent and cheap, and Omis is on the main Split to Dubrovnik route so getting in and out is easy without a car.

THE TOWN IS WALKABLE AND THE CLIMBS START FROM IT. The old town, the beach, the harbour and the Mirabela path are all within fifteen minutes on foot. For the canyon, the operators collect you; for the upper Cetina villages and the Biokovo side, a car helps.

AND THE COAST ROAD IS BUSY AND NARROW IN AUGUST. The Adriatic Highway through Omis is a two-lane road carrying everything, the town is a bottleneck, and parking in July and August is genuinely difficult. If you are driving, ask your accommodation about parking before you arrive rather than after.

The Omis Packing List

Two unfenced fortress climbs on polished limestone, a cold fast river, a hot rock amphitheatre, and a long pebble beach.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the right layer for a destination where the day has two halves: you climb to Fortica and sweat through everything, then you sit in a canyon breeze or get soaked on a raft. Wool keeps its warmth when it is damp, which is the condition you will actually be in, and it does not hold the smell of a hard climb.

Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX hiking shoes, and here this is the item that matters most. The Mirabela and Fortica paths are polished limestone and loose scree with unfenced edges, and the single commonest injury in a town like this is a slip on the descent. Do not attempt either fortress in a sandal.

A wide brim UPF 50 sun hat, because the fortress slopes face the sun with no shade and the beach has pines only at the back.

Darn Tough merino hiking socks for the climbs, which are short, steep and hard on the feet.

A waterproof dry bag, which is the one piece of kit the rafting and canyoning operators do not reliably provide for your own phone and keys, and which is also useful on a pebble beach.

Not linked and worth packing: WATER SHOES for the pebble beach and the river, which this registry's only entry cannot be recommended for because its product identity is unverified; SUNSCREEN, which the registry does not carry at all; AND A HEAD TORCH if you intend to be on the Fortica path near dusk, because the descent in the dark on that surface is a bad idea without one.

Essential Resources for Women in Omis

Emergency numbers: 112 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked one, with operators who will find an English speaker. It is the single number across the whole European Union. 195 reaches SEA RESCUE, and for anything in the canyon or on the cliffs the Croatian MOUNTAIN RESCUE SERVICE, the HGSS, is reached through 112.

THE FORTRESSES ARE THE MOST LIKELY PLACE TO GET HURT IN THIS TOWN AND THAT IS NOT OBVIOUS FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHS. Mirabela's tower has a ladder, a hatch and an open platform; Fortica is an hour of exposed zigzag path; both have the unfenced edges of medieval fortification and both are on limestone that polishes smooth and turns slippery with a little damp. Go up early, come down carefully, keep one hand free rather than both on a phone, and treat the descent as the dangerous half, because it is.

AND THE ADVENTURE OPERATORS ARE WHERE TO ASK THE AWKWARD QUESTIONS. Rafting, canyoning and zip lines here are a real industry with a range of operators, and the questions worth asking are about the guide ratio, whether helmets and buoyancy aids are included and fitted rather than handed over, and what happens if the river is high. Croatia's advisory names adventure tourism generally; the specific answer in a canyon is to choose on the briefing rather than the price.

Croatia still has unexploded mines from the 1990s war and the FCDO names the areas. The affected ground is EASTERN SLAVONIA, BROD-POSAVINA COUNTY, KARLOVAC COUNTY, AREAS AROUND ZADAR COUNTY and the more remote parts of PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK. The instruction where it applies is to stay off uncultivated land, not to step off marked paths, and to take local advice if in any doubt. For most coastal trips this is background rather than a live concern, and the honest reason to carry it anyway is that the Zagreb road to the northern Adriatic crosses Karlovac County, and that Plitvice is on most itineraries. FOR OMIS THE WARNING DOES NOT REACH HERE: the named ground is Eastern Slavonia, Brod-Posavina, Karlovac County, areas around Zadar County and remote parts of Plitvice, none of which is central Dalmatia, so the canyon paths and the climbing crags above this town are not affected.

Croatia is in the EU, so a UK Global Health Insurance Card or an EU European Health Insurance Card gives you state-provided medically necessary care on the same terms as a resident. That is not the same as free and it does not cover repatriation or a private clinic, so travel insurance sits on top of it rather than instead of it. Croatian public hospitals are good, the coastal cities have private clinics used to foreign patients, and a ljekarna handles minor problems without an appointment. Tap water is drinkable throughout. Jellyfish and sea urchins are the common summer complaint on the Adriatic, and swim shoes solve the urchins.

US State Department travel advisory: the Croatia advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/croatia, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

Main hospital or clinic: Omis has a health centre for ordinary and urgent problems and the SPLIT CLINICAL HOSPITAL CENTRE, about forty minutes north, is the major hospital for the whole of central Dalmatia, which is close enough that a serious injury on a fortress path is dealt with properly and quickly. A LJEKARNA handles minor problems without an appointment. Bring a UK GHIC or EU EHIC for state care on resident terms, with insurance on top for repatriation and private clinics, and IF YOU PLAN TO RAFT, CLIMB OR CANYON, CHECK THAT YOUR POLICY COVERS THEM BY NAME, because adventure activities are the standard exclusion.

Official health authority: the Croatian Institute of Public Health, is the Croatian Institute of Public Health

US Embassy: the United States Embassy in Zagreb.

Official tourism authority: the Croatian National Tourist Board, covers the country, and the Omis tourist board publishes the festival dates and the fortress opening hours, which are shorter out of season

Takeaways

The canyon made the pirates and the pirates made the town. Venice tried and failed to settle it.

Both fortresses have unfenced edges and polished limestone. The descent is the dangerous half.

The river keeps the sea cooler here than on the Makarska riviera ten minutes south.

Check that your insurance names rafting and canyoning. They are the standard exclusion.

Solo women safety assessment: Omis is a straightforward and safe town to visit alone. Croatia records overall crime as low with violent incidents rare, THERE ARE NO ADVISED-AGAINST AREAS ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY, the old town and the beach promenade are busy into the evening, and eating alone is unremarkable. The medical geography is good: a health centre in town and a major hospital forty minutes away in Split. THE REAL RISK HERE IS THE TERRAIN AND IT IS GENUINE. Mirabela and Fortica are medieval fortifications with unfenced edges, reached by polished limestone paths that are slippery when damp, and a fall on the descent is the commonest serious injury in a town like this: grippy shoes, an early start, one hand free, and the descent taken slowly are the whole defence. The adventure industry is the second consideration rather than a danger, and the way to use it is to choose an operator on the quality of the briefing and the kit rather than on price, and to confirm that your insurance names rafting and canyoning, because they are the standard exclusion. WHERE THE ADVISORY IS SPECIFIC IS ABOUT TAXIS AND BILLS: the FCDO records that SEXUAL ASSAULTS HAVE OCCURRED IN TAXIS IN CROATIA and advises photographing the car's identification, sharing your ride in the app, and booking rather than taking an unmarked car that approaches you, which matters most on the Split airport run. It also records inflated bills at some venues followed by pressure to pay, so ask for an itemised receipt rather than settling under pressure. The landmine warning does not reach central Dalmatia. Carry identification, which Croatia expects. 112 for everything, 195 sea rescue, and mountain rescue through 112.

Reading On

Omis sits between a city and a riviera and this library covers both. Forty minutes north, the Split packing list covers the Roman palace and the airport most visitors use, and the Trogir packing list the walled island town just beyond it. South, the Baska Voda packing list covers the Makarska riviera under the Biokovo wall, and the Makarska packing list its main town. Offshore, the Hvar packing list and the Korcula packing list cover the islands this channel faces, BRAC, the one directly opposite, having no post in this library yet. Inland, the Plitvice packing list covers the lakes and the other great Croatian water landscape. For the country as a whole, the Croatia packing list and the Croatia travel guide for women carry the regions, the ferries and the etiquette in full. For why wool is the right layer when a day runs from a hard climb to a soaking in a canyon, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
