Florianopolis Packing List for Women: Forty Two Beaches and a Cold Sea

Aerial view of the Hercilio Luz bridge at sunset in Florianopolis, Brazil

Florianopolis is the capital of Santa Catarina, most of it on an island off the southern Brazilian coast, joined to the mainland by three bridges including the 1926 Hercilio Luz, which reopened in 2019 after twenty eight years closed. Brazilians call it Ilha da Magia and treat it as one of the best places in the country to live. It has 42 beaches on an island 54 kilometres long, which is the statistic everyone quotes, and it is a genuinely different Brazil from the one most visitors picture.

The difference is southern. This is the Brazil settled from the Azores in the eighteenth century, not from Portugal directly or from Africa, and the villages on the south and west of the island still show it in the architecture, the fishing boats and the oysters, of which Santa Catarina produces the overwhelming majority of Brazil's farmed supply. It sits at 27 degrees south, which is further from the equator than Rio, and that single fact is behind almost every packing decision here.

What Makes Florianopolis Different to Pack For

It has a real winter, and the sea is cold

This is the thing that catches people. Summer, December to March, is 25°C to 31°C, humid, and crowded. Winter, June to August, runs 12°C to 21°C with wind and rain and nights that drop to 8°C or 9°C, and the island has no heating in most accommodation, so a winter visit needs genuine warm clothing.

The ocean is cold for Brazil year round: roughly 18°C to 24°C, warmest in February and distinctly cold in August, because this coast gets cool water from the south. A merino wool base layer for women is worth packing for anything outside high summer, both for the cold evenings and because it handles the humidity without holding smell.

The wind is constant and the rain has no season

Santa Catarina gets rain in every month, and Florianopolis is windy: the northeast wind in summer and the cold southerly in winter. Beach plans change at short notice, and a day that starts clear on Praia Mole can be blown out by lunchtime.

The beaches are not interchangeable

The east coast, facing the open Atlantic, has the surf and the dramatic sand: Praia Mole, Joaquina with its dunes, Santinho, Campeche. The north, Jurere and Canasvieiras, is calm, warm, built up and where the families and the Argentine holidaymakers go. The south and west are quiet, Azorean and oyster country. You will want different things depending on where you base yourself.

High season is a different city

From late December to Carnival the island is full. Prices double or triple, the single road to the north coast jams solid, and the population roughly doubles with Paulistas and Argentines. March and April, or October and November, give you the same beaches without the crush.

The Florianopolis Packing List

Footwear

Flip flops, which are the island's default footwear and which you can buy here more cheaply and better than at home. Trainers or comfortable walking shoes for the historic centre and the Lagoa.

For the hike in trails, and several of the best beaches are only reachable on foot, waterproof hiking shoes with grip: the path to Lagoinha do Leste is about an hour and a half of clay, root and rock that turns to a slide in the wet, and the Costa da Lagoa trail and the Naufragados path are similar. Closed shoes for the Joaquina dunes, where the sand gets hot enough to burn.

Clothing

For summer: light, loose and quick drying, two swimsuits so one is dry, a sarong, and rather more changes than you would take to a drier climate. Brazilian beachwear is briefer than most visitors are used to and nobody will care what you wear either way.

For winter and the shoulder months: a fleece or light insulated jacket, long trousers, closed shoes and a warm layer for the evening, because the accommodation is built to shed heat rather than hold it and an 11°C night indoors is genuinely uncomfortable.

A packable rain jacket year round, with a hood, because the wind here makes umbrellas pointless. Florianopolis dresses casually and beachily even in the city, and the Lagoa bar scene is smart casual at most, so one decent outfit covers everything.

For sun

Twenty seven degrees south with high summer UV, a lot of reflected light off pale sand, and an ozone situation over southern South America that makes the index worse than the latitude implies. A wide brim sun hat, sunglasses, and high factor sunscreen applied more often than feels necessary. Praia Mole and Joaquina have no shade at all.

Practical

Insect repellent, which matters more than the beach setting suggests: dengue is endemic in Santa Catarina and the mosquito that carries it bites in the daytime, in urban areas, so repellent is a day item here and not an evening one. A dry bag for boat trips to Campeche island or up the Costa da Lagoa.

Rehydration sachets for the humidity. Reef safe sunscreen. A power bank. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Brazil and Pix has largely replaced cash, but carry some reais for beach kiosks, the Mercado Publico and the smaller villages. A translation app, because English is not widely spoken outside tourist businesses and Florianopolis is less anglophone than Rio.

Check whether you need a yellow fever certificate: Santa Catarina is a recommended vaccination area, and some onward countries will ask for proof if you have been in Brazil.

What to Wear at Key Sites

The historic centre and the Mercado Publico

The mainland side of the bridge: the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Palacio Cruz e Sousa, the yellow 1898 public market with its oyster bars and cachaca counters, and the Hercilio Luz bridge alongside.

Practically: normal city clothing and closed shoes, because this is a working Brazilian city centre rather than a resort. The centre is busy and fine by day and empties at night, so it is a daytime destination. The market is the place to eat oysters and drink at 5pm with everyone else.

Lagoa da Conceicao

A large brackish lagoon in the middle of the island with a village on it, the best restaurants and bars, dunes on one side and boats up to the isolated Costa da Lagoa settlements.

Practically: this is where most visitors base themselves and it is walkable, lively and busy until late. Light clothing plus a layer for the evening wind off the water. The Costa da Lagoa boat is an open launch, so a windproof layer and a dry bag; the walking trail alongside it is about three hours each way.

Praia Mole, Joaquina and the east coast surf

Open Atlantic beaches with real waves, the Joaquina dunes behind for sandboarding, and Brazil's surf scene at its southern end.

Practically: these are not swimming beaches in the casual sense. The surf is powerful, the shore break at Praia Mole dumps, and rip currents here are the single commonest cause of trouble on the island; swim only where the lifeguards are and only within your depth. Rash vest or sun hoodie if you are in the water for long. Closed shoes to walk over the dunes, which reach 50°C at the surface.

Jurere, Canasvieiras and the north

Calm, shallow, warm water, high rise development, beach clubs and the Argentine summer crowd.

Practically: this is the swimming and family end of the island and the water is ten degrees more welcoming than the east. Standard beach clothing. The beach club scene at Jurere Internacional is expensive and dressy by island standards if that is your evening.

Ribeirao da Ilha and the Azorean south

An eighteenth century fishing village of coloured houses on the sheltered west shore, and the centre of Brazil's oyster farming.

Practically: flat shoes on cobbles, a light layer for the evening breeze off the channel, and an appetite. This is the calmest and most attractive part of the island and needs a car or a long bus ride.

Lagoinha do Leste and the walk in beaches

A beach with no road, reached by a trail of about an hour and a half from Pantano do Sul or a longer route from Matadeiro, and generally considered the best on the island.

Practically: take water, food, sun protection and closed shoes with grip, because there is nothing at the beach, no shade, no kiosk and no lifeguard, and the clay on the trail is slippery after rain. Start early, tell someone your plan, and allow for the return climb in the afternoon heat. The sea here has strong currents and no supervision.

What Not to Bring

Leave the assumption that Brazil means tropical, because Florianopolis in July is a cold, wet, windy place and the island's own residents wear coats.

Leave heavy cotton, which will not dry in February. Leave valuable jewellery and a visible expensive phone for the beach. Leave the expectation of warm swimming outside the December to March window. Leave a car free plan if you want the south of the island, because the bus network is slow and indirect. Leave high season if you have any choice, because the difference between January and March here is enormous. And leave the idea that 42 beaches means they are all the same beach, because choosing the wrong coast for what you want is the commonest way to be disappointed by this island.

Essential Resources for Women in Florianopolis

Emergency numbers in Brazil: 190 reaches the Policia Militar, 192 the SAMU ambulance service and 193 the fire service, which also handles water rescue and is the number for a drowning or a beach emergency. The Bombeiros lifeguards, Corpo de Bombeiros Militar de Santa Catarina, staff the main beaches in season and 193 is the number to call for anything in the water. 191 reaches the federal highway police for a road incident.

Tourist support: Santa Catarina operates a specialist tourist police unit, the Delegacia de Policia de Proteccao ao Turista, covering Florianopolis in high season, and the state civil police handle reports otherwise. Municipal tourist information desks operate at Hercilio Luz airport, the Mercado Publico and the Lagoa. A theft should be reported at a Delegacia for the boletim de ocorrencia your insurer will require, and it can usually be started online.

US Consulate: there is no US consulate in Florianopolis. The nearest are Porto Alegre, about seven hours south by road, and Sao Paulo, about eleven hours north, with the Embassy in Brasilia, all at br.usembassy.gov. Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at step.state.gov before you travel.

Main hospital or clinic: the Hospital Universitario da UFSC and the Hospital Governador Celso Ramos are the main public hospitals, and Hospital Baia Sul and the Hospital de Caridade are the main private ones, all in or near the centre on the mainland side. Note that the island's beach districts are 30 to 50 minutes from any hospital in traffic, which is a real consideration if you are staying at the north or south end. Brazilian public emergency care treats everyone including foreigners, but private care is faster and wants payment or insurance up front, so travel insurance is strongly advised.

Official health authority: the Ministerio da Saude at gov.br/saude, with the state health secretariat for Santa Catarina for local outbreak notices. Dengue is endemic and Santa Catarina has had significant outbreaks, with chikungunya and Zika also present, and the Aedes mosquito bites during the day, so daytime repellent is the main health precaution here. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for Santa Catarina and you should arrange it at least ten days before arrival. Tap water in Florianopolis is treated and generally considered safe, though most residents drink filtered water and bottled is easy. There is no malaria in southern Brazil.

US State Department travel advisory for Brazil: current advisory level and detail. The advisory is national and driven by urban crime in the large cities, and Santa Catarina is among the safer states, but read it directly rather than relying on this page.

UK FCDO travel advice for Brazil: entry requirements, safety and health guidance, including the crime, beach safety and health sections.

Official tourism authority: Embratur's visitor site at visitbrasil.com, with Santa Catarina Turismo and the municipal tourism office for the beach conditions, the ferry and boat schedules and the trail closures.

Solo women safety assessment: Florianopolis is among the easiest cities in Brazil for a woman travelling alone. Santa Catarina has one of the highest human development indices in the country, the island has a large student population from the federal university, and violent crime is far below Rio, Salvador or Sao Paulo. Staying in the Lagoa da Conceicao, Campeche or the north coast, walking in the evening in a busy area, eating alone and using ride hailing is entirely normal and widely done. The realistic risks are property crime and they concentrate predictably. Theft from the beach while you swim is the single most common incident on the island, so take nothing to the sand you cannot afford to lose and never leave a bag unattended. Phone snatching happens in the historic centre, around the bus terminals and on the busier beach promenades, so keep it out of sight and do not walk with it in your hand. Break ins to parked cars at trailheads, including the Lagoinha do Leste and Naufragados car parks, are frequent enough that you should leave nothing visible. The mainland city centre and the area around the TICEN bus terminal are fine by day and should be avoided on foot after dark. Use Uber or 99 rather than street taxis at night, which is the local norm too. Nightlife in the Lagoa and at Jurere is safe with ordinary care over drinks and a booked ride home, and drink spiking is the risk worth naming in the club scene. Street harassment exists at a low to moderate level, mostly verbal, and is less persistent than in the northeast of the country. The physical risks deserve equal weight because they cause more harm than crime does here. Rip currents on the east coast beaches are severe and drownings are the leading cause of visitor death on the island, so swim only where the Bombeiros have flags and never at an unsupervised beach like Lagoinha do Leste. The walk in trails are slippery clay with steep sections and no phone signal in places, so go in daylight, tell someone, and do not go alone in the wet. Dengue is a genuine health risk rather than a theoretical one. The sun is strong enough to cause serious burns in an afternoon. And if you hire a car, Brazilian traffic is fast and assertive, the island has a single congested artery north, and drink driving enforcement is strict with effectively a zero tolerance limit.
