Packing List for Canakkale: What Women Should Bring

The ancient stone ruins of Troy in Canakkale province, Turkiye

Canakkale is a town of about 190,000 on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles, the strait that joins the Aegean to the Sea of Marmara and separates Europe from Asia. It exists in most itineraries as a base for two things on opposite sides of the water: Troy to the south and the Gallipoli peninsula across the strait.

BE CLEAR ABOUT WHAT THIS TRIP IS. The town itself is a pleasant university port with a waterfront promenade, a clock tower, a castle and the wooden horse from the 2004 Troy film standing on the quay, and it is an evening rather than a day. WHAT YOU COME FOR IS TROY AND GALLIPOLI, and both are substantial, open-air, walking-heavy sites outside the town. Our Turkey travel guide for women covers the country.

TROY IS AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL IDEA AS MUCH AS A RUIN, and knowing that before you arrive prevents disappointment. The site at HISARLIK, about 30 kilometres south, holds NINE SUPERIMPOSED CITIES spanning roughly three thousand years, and what is visible is walls, foundations and trenches rather than anything monumental. THE MUSEUM OF TROY beside it, opened in 2018, is excellent and is what makes the visit work: see it first or the site will not read.

GALLIPOLI IS A WAR GRAVE AND SHOULD BE APPROACHED AS ONE. The peninsula across the strait holds the cemeteries and memorials of the 1915 campaign, in which something over a hundred thousand men died on both sides. ANZAC COVE, LONE PINE, CHUNUK BAIR and the Turkish Martyrs' Memorial are the main stops, and 25 APRIL IS ANZAC DAY, when the dawn service draws thousands and ATTENDANCE REQUIRES A PASS ARRANGED WELL IN ADVANCE through the Australian and New Zealand authorities. On any other day it is quiet, windy and moving.

AND THE STRAIT ITSELF IS WORTH NOTICING. It is about 1.2 kilometres wide at the narrowest, carries constant heavy shipping, and since 2022 is crossed by the 1915 CANAKKALE BRIDGE, which has the longest main span of any suspension bridge in the world. The ferries still run and are the better way across for the views.

Troy, Gallipoli and the Town

Nine cities on one mound, a peninsula of cemeteries, and a waterfront with a film prop on it.

TROY needs a guide or the museum to make sense, and preferably both. The layers are signposted by period, the walls of Troy VI are the most impressive remains, and the whole circuit is perhaps an hour and a half on exposed ground with little shade. The museum is a rust-coloured cube holding the finds, including material repatriated from abroad, and it is genuinely first-rate.

GALLIPOLI IS USUALLY DONE AS A GUIDED DAY and that is the right way, because the sites are spread over a large peninsula and the narrative is what connects them. A typical tour covers the Turkish memorial, Anzac Cove, Lone Pine, Johnston's Jolly, the Nek and Chunuk Bair, with ferry or bridge crossings either side. IT INVOLVES A GREAT DEAL OF WALKING ON OPEN HILLSIDE in whatever weather the strait is delivering.

IN THE TOWN: the waterfront KORDON for the evening promenade, the CIMENLIK CASTLE and naval museum with the replica minelayer Nusret, the ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, and the clock tower. The university gives the place a young, cheap, lively food and cafe scene that visitors often miss because they arrive late and leave early.

EATING: this is a fishing port, so the fish restaurants along the water are the point, and the local specialities are peynir helvasi, a cheese dessert, and the Bozcaada wines.

AND THE WOODEN HORSE ON THE QUAY is the prop from the Brad Pitt film, donated to the town, which the town displays with a certain humour. The one at Troy is a separate and more cheerful reconstruction you can climb.

Recommended Tours and Experiences

Assos, Bozcaada and the Coast

A temple on a cliff, a wine island, and the north Aegean beaches.

ASSOS, or Behramkale, is about an hour and a half southwest and is the loveliest place in the province: a village on a steep hill crowned by the Doric TEMPLE OF ATHENA, with Lesvos across the water and a tiny harbour of stone buildings at the bottom reached by a precipitous road. Aristotle taught here for three years. STAY THE NIGHT if you can.

BOZCAADA is an island an hour southwest plus a ferry, known for wine, windmills, a Venetian castle and beaches, and it is where Turkish visitors go for a quiet weekend. The wine is genuinely good and the island is small enough to cycle.

THE NORTH AEGEAN COAST south towards Ayvalik has the better beaches, and our Ayvalik packing list covers the olive town two to three hours down.

NORTHEAST, ISTANBUL is about five hours by road over the bridge, and EDIRNE on the Greek and Bulgarian borders is around four; our Edirne packing list covers it. The Bursa packing list covers the first Ottoman capital on the Marmara.

Getting around: Canakkale has a small airport with limited domestic flights, and most people arrive by bus from Istanbul in five to six hours or from Izmir in about five. FERRIES cross the strait to Eceabat and Kilitbahir constantly and cheaply. For Troy, a dolmus runs or a tour collects you; for Gallipoli, take a tour unless you have a car and a guidebook.

When to Go

May, June, September and October. The wind is the constant.

A transitional Mediterranean climate with a strong maritime influence: January and February 4 to 11C, July and August 20 to 30C, and rain concentrated from November to March.

MAY, JUNE, SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER are the best windows: warm, clear, and comfortable for long days on open sites. May has wildflowers on the Gallipoli hillsides, which changes that visit considerably.

JULY AND AUGUST are hot and the sites are exposed, with Troy and the Gallipoli hillsides offering almost no shade. Turkish domestic holidays fill the coast. It is doable with an early start and unpleasant at midday.

25 APRIL IS ANZAC DAY and the peninsula is at its busiest and most constrained, with road closures, an overnight vigil and PASSES REQUIRED FOR THE DAWN SERVICE arranged months ahead. If you are coming for it, plan around it specifically; if not, avoid that week.

NOVEMBER TO MARCH is wet, grey and windy, with the strait at its roughest and some ferry disruption. Troy and Gallipoli are open and nearly empty, which has an austere appeal, and the cold on an exposed hillside is more than the figures suggest.

AND THE WIND IS THE YEAR-ROUND FACT. The Dardanelles funnels it, the Gallipoli ridges are fully exposed, and a 22C day on the peninsula can feel ten degrees colder standing still at a cemetery. This is the single thing to pack for.

Is Canakkale Safe for Women Travelers

Very safe. The weather, the exposure and the road are the risks.

US State Department travel advisory: the Turkey advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

UK FCDO: the FCDO ADVISES AGAINST ALL TRAVEL WITHIN 10KM OF THE TURKEY-SYRIA BORDER, citing continued fighting across the border and a heightened terrorism risk, and notes that roads in Hatay province towards the border can close at short notice. Two further areas carry PERMIT requirements rather than advice against travel: in HAKKARI PROVINCE you must get permission from the local governor's office to visit areas near the Iraqi and Iranian borders, and MOUNT ARARAT in Agri province is a special military zone needing permission and a fee. Nowhere else in the country is advised against. On terrorism the FCDO states that terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks, that most attacks have occurred in SOUTHEAST TURKEY, ANKARA AND ISTANBUL, and that attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreign nationals. EARTHQUAKES are the other national risk: many parts of Turkey experience them, they can be high magnitude, and a 6.2 magnitude quake in the Sea of Marmara in April 2025 was felt strongly in Istanbul. AFAD, the national disaster authority, publishes current seismic information.

CANAKKALE IS A UNIVERSITY TOWN AND A QUIET ONE, and it is among the most comfortable places in Turkey for a woman travelling alone. There is no resort strip, no tout pressure, a large young student population and a visible number of women out alone in the evening on the Kordon. Petty theft is the ordinary pattern and violent crime against visitors is rare.

The FCDO publishes a specific sexual assault figure for Turkey and it is the single most important thing in this section. Of the 4.27 million British travellers who visited Turkey in 2025, 29 cases of sexual assault including rape were reported to British consular staff. THE MAJORITY OF REPORTED CASES TOOK PLACE DURING THE TOURIST SEASON IN COASTAL RESORT AREAS, the crimes were often committed by someone the victim had met during the day, and A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER WERE BY HOTEL OR SPA STAFF. That last clause is the one that changes behaviour, because it is not the stranger-in-a-dark-street scenario most advice is written around: it means treating a familiar face at your own hotel, a massage booking or a spa treatment as a situation to arrange deliberately rather than casually. Ask for a female therapist and confirm it on arrival, decline a treatment in a room you cannot leave freely, tell someone where you are, and do not let a member of staff you have been friendly with all week become an exception to that. The FCDO also records sexual attacks on minors who used toilet facilities alone.

THAT FCDO PATTERN CONCERNS COASTAL RESORT AREAS AND HOTEL AND SPA STAFF, and Canakkale is neither a resort nor a spa town, so the exposure here is lower than on the Mediterranean. It is carried because it is a national figure and because the hotel clause does not stop applying in a university town: keep a room number to yourself, and arrange any spa treatment deliberately rather than casually.

Methanol poisoning kills visitors to Turkey and the FCDO has a dedicated section on it. People have died or been left seriously ill after drinking illegally produced local spirits or counterfeit bottles of branded alcohol, and the FCDO notes cases including in Ankara and Istanbul. EVEN SMALL AMOUNTS OF METHANOL CAN KILL, and it cannot be identified by taste or smell. Buy spirits from licensed shops rather than from a hotel minibar refill or a street vendor, be suspicious of unusually cheap branded bottles and of free cocktails, and treat a spirit poured from an unlabelled bottle as the specific thing to decline. The FCDO carries a separate DRINK AND FOOD SPIKING warning for Turkey, including the pattern of strangers approaching visitors to change money or to steer them to a particular restaurant or club.

THE EXPOSURE ON THE SITES IS THE REAL RISK AND IT IS UNDERRATED. Troy and the Gallipoli ridges are open ground with no shade and constant wind, visits run three to eight hours, and people get sunburnt, dehydrated or chilled depending on the season, sometimes both in a day. There is little shelter and few facilities once a tour is moving.

THE GROUND IS UNEVEN at both: Troy is trenches, loose stone and low walls, and the Gallipoli cemeteries sit on steep hillsides with grass and gravel paths. Proper shoes matter more than at most Turkish sites.

THE STRAIT carries heavy shipping and strong currents and is not a swimming channel; the beaches are elsewhere. Ferries are safe and occasionally disrupted by wind.

STRAY DOGS are present as across Turkey, with rabies in the country, so a bite needs immediate medical attention.

Turkey has no reciprocal health agreement with the UK or the EU, so travel insurance with medical cover is essential and should cover any activity you actually intend to do, because paragliding, quad biking and jeep safaris are all common here and all commonly excluded. Private hospitals in the cities and the larger resorts are modern and will expect payment or an insurance guarantee up front, and some have been reported for inflating bills for insured foreign patients, so keep your insurer in the loop from the start. An eczane handles minor problems and Turkish pharmacists are well trained. TAP WATER IS CHLORINATED AND GENERALLY SAFE but tastes heavily of it and almost everyone drinks bottled. RABIES IS PRESENT and the FCDO notes that packs of stray dogs congregate in parks and wasteland and can be aggressive, so a bite needs medical advice immediately rather than later.

Socially this is a moderate, educated Turkish town. Covered shoulders and knees are the comfortable default and a headscarf is needed in mosques. GALLIPOLI IS A CEMETERY and the convention there is simple respect: quiet, modest dress, and no climbing on memorials. English is spoken by guides and at the university and less generally.

The Canakkale Packing List

A windproof layer, which is the single most important item

A packable rain jacket for women, carried entirely for wind. The Gallipoli ridges and the ferry deck are exposed in every season, and a 22C day standing still at a cemetery in a Dardanelles wind is genuinely cold.

Base layers, because the days are long and the temperature swings

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women is the right answer for an eight-hour battlefield day that starts cold, turns hot in the open and ends windy on a ferry. Add a fleece mid layer outside July and August.

Walking shoes, not sandals

Troy is trenches and loose stone; the Gallipoli cemeteries are steep grass and gravel. Trainers at minimum, light walking shoes better, and the same pair does the town.

Sun protection for sites with no shade

A wide brim sun hat with a chin cord, which the wind makes necessary, high factor sunscreen and a long sleeve sun hoodie. Neither Troy nor the peninsula offers anywhere to get out of the sun. We hold no sunscreen in the registry, so that is advice rather than a recommendation.

Water and food for the day

An insulated water bottle and something to eat. A Gallipoli tour covers a lot of ground with limited stops, Troy has a cafe at the museum and nothing on the site, and Turkish tap water is chlorinated and generally safe.

Something modest and respectful

Covered shoulders and knees for the town and the mosques, with a scarf for headcovering, and the same for Gallipoli, which is a war grave rather than a monument.

The small things

Sunglasses, as much for grit on a windy ridge as for light. Cash in lira for the dolmus and smaller places, checked for counterfeits. A book on the campaign, because the sites repay knowing the story. And if ANZAC Day is the reason you are coming, arrange the pass months ahead.

Essential Resources for Women in Canakkale

Emergency numbers: 112 is the single emergency number in Turkey for ambulance, fire and police. 155 reaches police directly in towns and 156 the Jandarma in rural areas, which covers most of the Gallipoli peninsula. 158 is coastguard, relevant on the strait.

Tourist police and women's support: Canakkale is served by the regular police on 155 rather than a dedicated tourist unit. 183 is the Turkish Social Support Line, which handles violence against women and children. For a complaint about a tour operator, the provincial directorate of culture and tourism is the route.

Main hospital or clinic: Canakkale has a state hospital with a 24 hour emergency department and a university medical faculty, plus private clinics. NOTE THAT THE GALLIPOLI PENINSULA IS ACROSS THE STRAIT, so an emergency there involves a ferry or the bridge and the nearest facilities are at Eceabat and Gelibolu. AN ECZANE handles minor problems. Contact your insurer before agreeing to private treatment.

Official health authority: the Turkish Ministry of Health. Turkey has no reciprocal health agreement with the UK or the EU, so insurance with medical cover is essential. Note that an emergency on the Gallipoli peninsula is across the strait from the Canakkale hospital

US Embassy: the United States Embassy in Ankara.

Official tourism authority: Go Turkiye, the national tourism board. And with the Canakkale provincial directorate of culture and tourism, plus the Museum of Troy, which should be seen BEFORE the site rather than after, and the Gallipoli historical site authority for Anzac Day arrangements

See the Museum of Troy before the site. What survives at Hisarlik is walls, foundations and trenches across nine cities, and without the museum first it does not read.

Gallipoli is a war grave. Quiet, modest dress, and no climbing on memorials. On any day but 25 April it is nearly empty.

Anzac Day on 25 April needs a pass arranged months in advance through the Australian and New Zealand authorities, with road closures and an overnight vigil.

The wind is the year-round fact. The strait funnels it and the ridges are fully exposed, so a warm 22C day can feel ten degrees colder standing at a cemetery.

Solo women safety assessment: Canakkale is among the most comfortable places in Turkey for a woman travelling alone. It is a university town with no resort strip and no tout pressure, a large young student population, and a visible number of women out by themselves in the evening along the Kordon; petty theft is the ordinary pattern and violent crime against visitors is rare. Socially it is moderate and educated, with covered shoulders and knees the comfortable default and a headscarf needed in mosques, and English spoken by guides and at the university rather than generally. THE FCDO'S NATIONAL SEXUAL ASSAULT FIGURE IS CARRIED because it is national, but its pattern concerns COASTAL RESORT AREAS and names hotel and spa staff, and Canakkale is neither a resort nor a spa town, so the exposure here is lower than on the Mediterranean; the hotel clause still applies, so keep a room number private and arrange any spa treatment deliberately. Methanol-contaminated spirits are a published Turkish risk that kills people. THE REAL RISKS HERE ARE WEATHER AND EXPOSURE. Troy and the Gallipoli ridges are open ground with no shade and constant wind, visits run three to eight hours with few facilities once a tour is moving, and people get sunburnt, dehydrated or chilled, sometimes all three in a day. The ground is uneven at both, Troy being trenches and loose stone and the cemeteries steep grass and gravel. The strait carries heavy shipping and strong currents and is not for swimming. And stray dogs are present with rabies in the country, so a bite needs immediate attention. 183 is the Turkish social support line.
