Packing List for Baden-Baden, Germany: What Women Should Bring

Idyllic view of a serene river flowing through a verdant park in Baden-Baden, Germany.

Baden-Baden is a spa town on the western edge of the Black Forest where hot mineral water has been coming out of the ground since the Romans piped it, and where the nineteenth century built a casino, a colonnade and a concert hall around it. It is small, green, expensive in places and free in others, and one fact about it decides what you pack.

What Is Here

THE FRIEDRICHSBAD IS TEXTILE-FREE AND MIXED ON MOST DAYS, AND ALMOST NOTHING WRITTEN IN ENGLISH SAYS SO PLAINLY. The historic 1877 bathhouse runs a seventeen-stage Roman-Irish circuit of showers, hot air rooms, steam, soaping, brushing, immersion and a wrapped rest, and you do the whole of it WITHOUT A SWIMSUIT. Most days are mixed, with a smaller number of women-only sessions in some areas, and the schedule changes, so CHECK IT ON THE DAY YOU PLAN TO GO rather than assuming. Nobody is embarrassed, the atmosphere is quiet and clinical rather than social, talking is discouraged, and the attendants are matter-of-fact. It is a genuinely remarkable two hours. It is also not for everybody, and the point of saying it clearly is that you get to decide in advance instead of at the door.

THE CARACALLA SPA IS THE SWIMSUIT ALTERNATIVE AND IT IS NEXT DOOR. Same thermal water, modern building, indoor and outdoor pools, grottoes and jets, swimwear required throughout. ITS UPSTAIRS SAUNA LEVEL IS TEXTILE-FREE, which catches people out, so if you want to stay clothed, stay on the pool floor. The two together mean you can have the thermal water however you want it.

Beautiful street scene in Baden-Baden, Germany with historical architecture and church tower in view.

THE TOWN ITSELF IS A WALKING TOWN and the second image is what the streets look like. The Lichtentaler Allee is a long landscaped park along the Oos river, free and open, and is the best thing here after the water. The Trinkhalle's painted colonnade, the Kurhaus and the casino sit at one end, the old town climbs the hill behind, and the Stiftskirche sits on top of Roman bath ruins you can visit.

THE CASINO HAS A DRESS CODE AND IT IS ENFORCED. Jacket and tie for men; for women, smart dress. No jeans, no trainers, no sportswear. Jackets can be hired at the door. There are also morning guided tours when the tables are closed, which need no dress code and cost very little.

The third image is the Hohenbaden castle ruin above the town, the Altes Schloss, reachable on foot up through the forest in about an hour or by bus, free to walk around, with a view down the Rhine valley.

THE BLACK FOREST STARTS AT THE EDGE OF TOWN and the Panoramaweg is a 40km marked circuit you can join for an afternoon. The Merkur funicular takes you to 668m and the paved paths at the top suit any level of walking.

When to Go

May to October for the forest and the park, with September and early October the best of it: warm days, the Lichtentaler Allee turning, and the spa town at its most comfortable.

Winter is an underrated time to come, because thermal water is better in cold weather and the outdoor pools at the Caracalla in snow are the whole argument for the place.

The town is busiest in high summer and during the festival and racing seasons. Nothing here gets unpleasant, but hotel prices move sharply.

Check the Friedrichsbad's schedule for the day you want before you commit to it, because the mixed and separated days vary and it closes for maintenance periods.

Getting There

By train, Baden-Baden is on the main Frankfurt to Basel line. About an hour and a half from Frankfurt, half an hour from Karlsruhe, two hours from Stuttgart. THE STATION IS IN OOS, about four kilometres from the centre, with frequent buses, so do not plan to walk it with luggage.

By air, Karlsruhe Baden-Baden airport is fifteen minutes away and Stuttgart and Frankfurt are both straightforward.

By car, directly off the A5. Parking in the centre is underground and paid.

You do not need a car here. The town is walkable, the buses reach the trailheads and the funicular, and the Black Forest valleys are better by local train than by driving.

Is Baden-Baden Safe for Women?

Baden-Baden is among the safest and easiest destinations in this library. The FCDO publishes no advised-against areas anywhere in Germany, and its terrorism wording is the strongest it uses: terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Germany, with restaurants, MARKETS, shopping centres, places of worship, sporting events and crowded public spaces named as possible targets. That is worth knowing in a country where a Christmas market is often the reason for the trip, and the response is awareness rather than avoidance. On crime the FCDO puts German levels on a par with the UK and names theft and pickpocketing at airports, railway stations and in crowded places, with the specific advice not to leave bags unattended. It also gives one unusually concrete warning: exchange currency only at banks and legitimate bureaux, because counterfeit notes are passed to visitors at street kiosks.

THE BATHS ARE THE THING TO PREPARE FOR AND THEY ARE NOT A SAFETY RISK. They are staffed throughout, the circuit is signed and timed, the attendants direct you, and there is no part of it where you are alone in an unsupervised space. What makes people uncomfortable is not knowing in advance that the Friedrichsbad is textile-free, which is why this post says it three times.

THE HEAT IS THE REAL HAZARD. The hot air rooms run to 68 degrees and the circuit moves you through steam and immersion before a wrapped rest. Dehydration and feeling faint on standing are the ordinary problems. Drink water before and during, do not go in on an empty stomach or after alcohol, and do not do the full circuit on the day you fly.

Wet marble and tiled steps throughout both bathhouses. This is the commonest injury in any spa town.

Forest paths are well marked and genuinely steep in places, and mobile coverage drops in the valleys. Tell someone your route if you go up alone.

TICKS ARE PRESENT IN THE BLACK FOREST from spring to autumn, and parts of Baden-Wurttemberg are a recognised tick-borne encephalitis risk area. Cover your legs on overgrown paths and check yourself afterwards.

The Baden-Baden Packing List

A spa town in a forest: wet floors, cool valley air and an enforced dress code.

Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women earns its place here for an unusual reason: you will come out of thermal water with your core temperature raised and then walk through cool damp forest air, and wool handles that transition without the clammy stage. From November to March add a heavyweight merino base layer.

A Columbia Fast Trek II fleece and a Marmot PreCip Eco rain jacket. The Black Forest is called that because it is wet and wooded.

Walking shoes with grip and Darn Tough merino socks for the Panoramaweg and the climb to the Altes Schloss.

Not linked and worth packing, and the first of these is the most important item in this post: BATHING FOOTWEAR, meaning simple rubber sliders or pool sandals for the wet floors. We give that advice with no link deliberately. Our affiliate register holds no sandal, flip-flop, robe or bathing-footwear product of any kind, and the honest thing to do is say so rather than point you at something unrelated. Also: A SWIMSUIT, for the Caracalla and for nothing in the Friedrichsbad; A HAIRBRUSH AND A LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER, because the mineral water is hard; ONE SMART OUTFIT AND CLOSED SHOES if the casino is on your list, since the dress code is enforced at the door; and A WATER BOTTLE. Germany is increasingly card-friendly but SOME SMALL BLACK FOREST CAFES AND THE BATH LOCKERS STILL WANT CASH AND COINS.

Essential Resources for Women in Baden-Baden

Emergency numbers: 112 for police, ambulance and fire, free from any phone including a locked mobile, with operators who will find an English speaker. It is the single number across the whole European Union.

The single thing to know before you arrive: THE FRIEDRICHSBAD IS TEXTILE-FREE, meaning no swimsuit, and MIXED ON MOST DAYS, with a smaller number of women-only sessions in some areas and a schedule that changes, so check it for your date. THE CARACALLA SPA NEXT DOOR REQUIRES SWIMWEAR on the pool floor, and ITS UPSTAIRS SAUNA LEVEL IS TEXTILE-FREE, which is where people get caught out. THE HEAT IS THE HAZARD RATHER THAN ANYTHING ELSE: the hot air rooms reach around 68 degrees, so drink water before and during, avoid alcohol and an empty stomach, and do not do the full circuit on a flying day. Wet marble and tiled steps are the commonest injury in both buildings. THE CASINO DRESS CODE IS ENFORCED and jackets can be hired at the door. THE STATION IS 4KM FROM THE CENTRE in Oos, so take the bus rather than walking with luggage. TICKS ARE PRESENT IN THE BLACK FOREST spring to autumn and parts of Baden-Wurttemberg are a recognised tick-borne encephalitis risk area. Forest mobile coverage is patchy in the valleys.

US State Department travel advisory: the Germany advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.

UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/germany, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.

Main hospital: the Klinikum Mittelbaden on the Balger Strasse is the city hospital and has a 24 hour emergency department, a few minutes from the centre. Dial 112 for police, ambulance or fire. The pharmacy duty rota is posted on every Apotheke door and published by the Landesapothekerkammer, and a Notdienst-Apotheke is open overnight in rotation. Germany is in the EU, so a UK Global Health Insurance Card or an EU European Health Insurance Card gives you state-provided medically necessary care on the same terms as a resident. That is not the same as free: German healthcare involves patient contributions and the card does not cover repatriation or private treatment, so travel insurance sits on top of it. German hospitals are excellent and English is widely spoken in them, particularly in university cities. An Apotheke, marked with a red A, handles minor problems without an appointment and the duty rota for out-of-hours is posted in the window. Tap water is drinkable everywhere. Dial 112 for an ambulance and 116117 for the non-emergency medical service.

Official tourism authority: the German National Tourist Board. covers the Baden-Baden spa schedules and the Black Forest walking network

Takeaways

The Friedrichsbad is textile-free and mixed on most days. Decide before you go.

The Caracalla is the swimsuit option, except upstairs.

Bring bathing sandals. They are the most useful thing in your bag here.

The station is four kilometres out. Take the bus.

Solo women safety assessment: Baden-Baden is one of the most comfortable places in this library to visit alone. It is a small, wealthy, heavily policed spa town where the streets are quiet and well lit, the park is open and busy into the evening, and the whole centre is walkable in twenty minutes. There is no district to avoid and no hour that feels wrong, and eating alone is entirely normal in a town built around people who come for a cure rather than a party. 112 REACHES POLICE, AMBULANCE AND FIRE free from any phone; the Klinikum Mittelbaden on the Balger Strasse has a 24 hour emergency department; and the overnight pharmacy rota is posted on every Apotheke door. THE THING THAT MAKES WOMEN UNCOMFORTABLE HERE IS NOT A SAFETY MATTER AND IT IS WORTH SEPARATING CLEANLY. The Friedrichsbad, which is the main reason to come, is TEXTILE-FREE and MIXED on most days: you do a seventeen-stage circuit with no swimsuit, alongside men, and the schedule for women-only sessions varies and must be checked for your own date. The building is staffed at every stage, nobody is unsupervised anywhere in it, talking is discouraged, and the attendants are briskly professional, so the experience itself is calm rather than exposed. But it is not for everyone, the English-language sources are vague about it, and arriving without knowing is the thing that ruins it. If it is not for you, the Caracalla next door uses the same water and requires swimwear on the pool floor, with only its upstairs sauna level textile-free. The genuine physical risks are heat and wet floors: the hot air rooms run to around 68 degrees, so drink water, skip alcohol, do not arrive hungry, and expect to feel light-headed standing up. Up in the forest the paths are well marked and steep, mobile signal drops in the valleys, and ticks are present from spring to autumn in a recognised risk region, so cover your legs and check afterwards.

Reading On

Baden-Baden sits on the edge of its forest and belongs to it: the Black Forest packing list is its parent for the region, covering the valleys, the walking network and the tick season in full, and this post is the spa town at the forest's western door. Elsewhere in the south west, the Stuttgart packing list is two hours east and the Heidelberg packing list an hour north, both on the same rail spine. Further afield the Munich packing list covers Bavaria's capital, the Frankfurt packing list the main air gateway, and the Cologne packing list and Berlin packing list the north and east. For the country as a whole, the Germany travel guide for women and the Germany packing list carry the transport, the regions and the practicalities. For why wool is the layer that handles coming out of hot water into cool forest air, read the guide to merino wool base layers for women. Every destination we cover is indexed at the travel packing guide for women, and the base layers are at the Roman Trail collection.
