Alanya sits on the Turkish Mediterranean about 130 kilometres east of Antalya, built around a rock peninsula that carries a Seljuk castle and divides the town into two long beaches. It is one of Turkey's biggest resorts and it has a genuine history under the sunbeds.

THE CASTLE AND THE RED TOWER ARE THE REASON THIS IS NOT JUST A BEACH STRIP. The KIZIL KULE, the Red Tower, is a 33 metre octagonal brick keep finished in 1226 to guard the TERSANE, the Seljuk shipyard cut into the rock beside it, which is the only surviving Seljuk dockyard anywhere. Above them, the castle walls run six and a half kilometres around the peninsula with an inner citadel, a Byzantine church and a village still inside. A cable car runs up from Kleopatra beach. Our Turkey travel guide for women covers the country.
THE SECOND THING IS THAT ALANYA IS A RESORT AND A RESIDENT TOWN AT THE SAME TIME, which changes its character out of season. There is a large permanent population of Scandinavian, German and Russian residents, so the town does not shut in winter the way a Greek island does: restaurants stay open, there is a Saturday market, and the sea is still swimmable into November. A February visit is quiet and mild rather than closed.
THE THIRD, AND IT IS THE PART OF THIS POST THAT MATTERS MOST, IS THAT THE FCDO PUBLISHES A SPECIFIC SEXUAL ASSAULT WARNING FOR TURKISH COASTAL RESORTS AND ALANYA IS ONE. The detail is below in the safety section rather than buried at the end, because it changes practical decisions about hotels, spa bookings and who you spend an evening with, and because it is the honest reason a packing list for women should exist at all.
The Castle, the Beaches and the Caves
A Seljuk dockyard, two long beaches either side of a rock, a cave for asthmatics and a river valley inland.
THE PENINSULA is a half day. The cable car or a road climbs to the EHMEDEK and the IC KALE citadel at the top, with the whole bay on both sides, and the walk down through the old village of ottoman houses is the best part. The KIZIL KULE and the TERSANE are at sea level on the eastern side and are ticketed together with the castle on a combined pass.
KLEOPATRA BEACH runs west from the rock for about two kilometres of coarse pale sand and is the better beach, named for a legend that Mark Antony gave the area to Cleopatra, which is probably true in the political sense and has nothing to do with the sand. The eastern beach is longer, greyer and backed by the hotel strip.
THE DAMLATAS CAVE sits at the foot of the rock beside Kleopatra beach, a small stalactite cave whose warm, humid, high-carbon-dioxide air has been used as an asthma treatment since the 1940s, with early-morning sessions for patients. As a visitor you see it in ten minutes and it is a genuinely odd piece of local medicine.
THE BOAT TRIPS are unavoidable and are mostly fine: wooden gulets and a fleet of mock-pirate ships run round the peninsula to the Phosphorus and Lovers caves with swimming stops. CHOOSE THE QUIETER OPERATORS unless a foam party at sea is what you want.
INLAND, THE DIM CAYI is the local escape: a cold river valley twenty minutes east where restaurants build platforms over the water and you eat trout with your feet in it, which in 35C is the most sensible thing in Alanya. DIM CAVE is nearby, and the SAPADERE CANYON an hour inland is a boardwalked gorge with pools.
AND THE ARCHAEOLOGY WORTH THE DRIVE: SYEDRA, a Roman town on a hillside twenty minutes east with mosaics and almost no visitors, and further afield the great sites of the Pamphylian coast towards Antalya.
Recommended Tours and Experiences
The Coast, Cappadocia and the Rest of Turkey
An hour and a half to Antalya, a long drive to the lycian west, and the interior beyond.
ANTALYA is about two hours west and is the region's city, with a walled old town at Kaleici, two good museums and the airport most Alanya visitors use; our Antalya packing list covers it. Gazipasa airport near Alanya takes some seasonal flights.
THE LYCIAN COAST further west is where Turkey's Mediterranean gets dramatic: our Kas packing list and Fethiye packing list cover the diving, the tombs and the Blue Lagoon, five to seven hours west of here.
SIDE, the Roman temple and theatre site, is about an hour and a quarter west and is a comfortable day trip. ASPENDOS, with the best-preserved Roman theatre in the Mediterranean, is a little further.
FOR THE INTERIOR: CAPPADOCIA is a long day's drive or a short flight and is a different trip entirely, covered in our Cappadocia packing list; PAMUKKALE and EPHESUS are covered in the Pamukkale packing list and Ephesus packing list.
Getting around: the town is walkable along the front and the two beaches, and dolmus minibuses run the strip cheaply and constantly. TAXIS ARE METERED AND THE FCDO ADVISES USING REGISTERED ONES, noting the registration before you get in and making sure the meter runs. Hiring a car is useful for the Dim Cayi, Sapadere and the archaeology, and Turkish driving on the coast road is fast.
When to Go
May, June, September and October. July and August are very hot and very full.
A hot Mediterranean climate with a long season: January and February 10 to 16C, July and August 27 to 34C and humid, sea between about 18C in spring and 28C in September, with rain almost entirely between November and March.
MAY, JUNE, SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER are the best months by a clear margin. Warm rather than punishing, the sea warm from June and warmest in September, the castle climbable without suffering, and the resort busy rather than solid. OCTOBER IS THE QUIET SECRET, with a 26C sea and thinning crowds.
JULY AND AUGUST are hot, humid and at full capacity, with the Turkish domestic holiday adding to the European one. The castle in August at midday is genuinely unpleasant and the strip is at its loudest.
NOVEMBER TO APRIL is the resident season: mild at 15 to 20C by day, some rain, the sea swimmable for the hardy into November, most restaurants open, and prices at their lowest. The mountains behind get snow, which is a striking view from a 17C beach.
AND RAMADAN moves each year and changes the daytime rhythm rather than preventing anything: resort restaurants serve normally, inland and in the old village it is more noticeable, and the evening iftar hour is busy and worth joining rather than avoiding.
Is Alanya Safe for Women Travelers
Read this section properly. The FCDO publishes a specific resort warning and it changes how you book.
US State Department travel advisory: the Turkey advisory. Read the current level there directly rather than relying on a figure printed in any guide.
UK FCDO travel advice: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey, and read the safety and security page rather than only the landing page, because that is where the substance sits.
UK FCDO: the FCDO ADVISES AGAINST ALL TRAVEL WITHIN 10KM OF THE TURKEY-SYRIA BORDER, citing continued fighting across the border and a heightened terrorism risk, and notes that roads in Hatay province towards the border can close at short notice. Two further areas carry PERMIT requirements rather than advice against travel: in HAKKARI PROVINCE you must get permission from the local governor's office to visit areas near the Iraqi and Iranian borders, and MOUNT ARARAT in Agri province is a special military zone needing permission and a fee. Nowhere else in the country is advised against. On terrorism the FCDO states that terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks, that most attacks have occurred in SOUTHEAST TURKEY, ANKARA AND ISTANBUL, and that attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreign nationals. EARTHQUAKES are the other national risk: many parts of Turkey experience them, they can be high magnitude, and a 6.2 magnitude quake in the Sea of Marmara in April 2025 was felt strongly in Istanbul. AFAD, the national disaster authority, publishes current seismic information.
The FCDO publishes a specific sexual assault figure for Turkey and it is the single most important thing in this section. Of the 4.27 million British travellers who visited Turkey in 2025, 29 cases of sexual assault including rape were reported to British consular staff. THE MAJORITY OF REPORTED CASES TOOK PLACE DURING THE TOURIST SEASON IN COASTAL RESORT AREAS, the crimes were often committed by someone the victim had met during the day, and A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER WERE BY HOTEL OR SPA STAFF. That last clause is the one that changes behaviour, because it is not the stranger-in-a-dark-street scenario most advice is written around: it means treating a familiar face at your own hotel, a massage booking or a spa treatment as a situation to arrange deliberately rather than casually. Ask for a female therapist and confirm it on arrival, decline a treatment in a room you cannot leave freely, tell someone where you are, and do not let a member of staff you have been friendly with all week become an exception to that. The FCDO also records sexual attacks on minors who used toilet facilities alone.
TO BE EXPLICIT ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS IN ALANYA, because this is a coastal resort in exactly the category the FCDO describes. The pattern it records is not a stranger in an alley: it is someone met during the day, and in a significant number of cases a member of hotel or spa staff. So the practical measures are about the ordinary friendly interactions of a resort holiday rather than about avoiding dark streets. Book a spa or massage with a female therapist and confirm it on arrival rather than accepting a substitution; decline a treatment in a room you cannot leave freely; tell someone where you are going and when; keep your room number to yourself; and do not let a week of friendliness with a particular member of staff become a reason to drop any of that. None of this is a reason not to come, and all of it is cheap to do.
Methanol poisoning kills visitors to Turkey and the FCDO has a dedicated section on it. People have died or been left seriously ill after drinking illegally produced local spirits or counterfeit bottles of branded alcohol, and the FCDO notes cases including in Ankara and Istanbul. EVEN SMALL AMOUNTS OF METHANOL CAN KILL, and it cannot be identified by taste or smell. Buy spirits from licensed shops rather than from a hotel minibar refill or a street vendor, be suspicious of unusually cheap branded bottles and of free cocktails, and treat a spirit poured from an unlabelled bottle as the specific thing to decline. The FCDO carries a separate DRINK AND FOOD SPIKING warning for Turkey, including the pattern of strangers approaching visitors to change money or to steer them to a particular restaurant or club.
THE SEA IS THE OTHER SERIOUS RISK AND THE FCDO IS BLUNT: people drown in the sea and in swimming pools in Turkey every year. Some Alanya beaches have strong undercurrents, there are hidden rocks and shallow depths where diving in is dangerous, and lifeguard cover is partial. Swim between the flags where they exist, never dive into unknown water, and supervise children even where a lifeguard is present.
ORDINARY CRIME IS LOW. Petty theft happens on the beaches and in the bazaar, and the FCDO notes COUNTERFEIT BANKNOTES in circulation in Turkey, which is worth knowing when taking change in cash. Carpet, leather and jewellery sales pressure is persistent rather than threatening.
STRAY DOGS are a real and specific Turkish issue that visitors underestimate: packs congregate in parks and wasteland, can be aggressive, and RABIES IS PRESENT IN TURKEY, so a bite needs medical attention immediately rather than later.
THE ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES deserve their own line, because the FCDO has sections on paragliding, quad biking, jeep safaris and water sports in Turkey. Operators vary, helmets are not always insisted on, and MANY TRAVEL POLICIES EXCLUDE THESE ACTIVITIES OUTRIGHT. Check the policy and the briefing.
Turkey has no reciprocal health agreement with the UK or the EU, so travel insurance with medical cover is essential and should cover any activity you actually intend to do, because paragliding, quad biking and jeep safaris are all common here and all commonly excluded. Private hospitals in the cities and the larger resorts are modern and will expect payment or an insurance guarantee up front, and some have been reported for inflating bills for insured foreign patients, so keep your insurer in the loop from the start. An eczane handles minor problems and Turkish pharmacists are well trained. TAP WATER IS CHLORINATED AND GENERALLY SAFE but tastes heavily of it and almost everyone drinks bottled. RABIES IS PRESENT and the FCDO notes that packs of stray dogs congregate in parks and wasteland and can be aggressive, so a bite needs medical advice immediately rather than later.
Socially Alanya is easy and thoroughly international, with Turkish, Russian, German and English all in daily use and a long-established resident foreign community. Dress on the beach and the strip is European. AWAY FROM THE RESORT, in the old village, the bazaar and inland, covered shoulders and knees are the courtesy, and a headscarf is needed in a mosque.
The Alanya Packing List
Sun protection for a shadeless castle climb
A wide brim sun hat, high factor sunscreen and a long sleeve sun hoodie. The castle walls and the peninsula have no shade at all and you will be at 250 metres in full sun. Our affiliate registry holds no sunscreen, so that is advice rather than a product recommendation.
Shoes for castle stone and boat decks
The castle is worn, polished rock and uneven steps over a long circuit, and the old village lanes are steep. Trainers or walking sandals with grip, not flip-flops. Something for rocky swimming entries helps and our registry holds no uncontested water-shoe entry, so that is advice with no link.
Something modest for the mosque, the village and inland
A light long-sleeved shirt or a large scarf that covers shoulders and doubles as a headscarf. It solves the Suleymaniye mosque in the castle, the bazaar and a Dim Cayi lunch in one item.
Base layers for the shoulder months and the evenings
Our merino base layers are 100% Australian merino at 17.5 micron, and a long sleeve merino wool base layer for women covers an October evening, a cool boat morning and a trip up into the snow-topped mountains behind the town, while staying wearable in humidity.
A windproof layer
A packable rain jacket for women, mostly for boats and for a winter visit, when the rain does arrive and arrives heavily.
Water and a dry bag
An insulated water bottle, because the castle has little in the way of supply and Turkish tap water, while chlorinated and generally safe, tastes strongly of it. A dry bag for boat days.
The small things
Sunglasses. A beach bag that closes. Cash in lira, in small notes, and check change for counterfeits. Your own toiletries, since resort amenities vary. And the one booking note that matters: if you intend to use a hotel spa or hammam, arrange a female therapist in advance and confirm it when you arrive.
Essential Resources for Women in Alanya
Emergency numbers: 112 is the single emergency number in Turkey for ambulance, fire and police. 155 reaches the police directly in towns and 156 the Jandarma in rural areas. 158 is coastguard, which matters on this coast.
Tourist police: Turkey operates a Turizm Polisi in the main tourist destinations, including Antalya province, handling visitor complaints with language support. For an offence against a woman, the police on 155 are the route and the Turkish women's support line is 183, the Social Support Line, which handles violence against women and can direct you to a shelter or a prosecutor.
Main hospital or clinic: Alanya has good private hospitals used to foreign patients and international insurance, including the Anadolu Hospital and Can Hospital, plus the public Alanya Training and Research Hospital with a 24 hour emergency department. AN ECZANE handles minor problems and Turkish pharmacists are well trained. NOTE THAT SOME PRIVATE HOSPITALS IN TURKISH RESORTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED FOR INFLATING BILLS for insured foreign patients, so contact your insurer before agreeing to treatment rather than after.
Official health authority: the Turkish Ministry of Health. Turkey has no reciprocal health agreement with the UK or the EU, so insurance with medical cover is essential and should explicitly cover paragliding, quad biking and jeep safaris if you intend to do them, because many policies exclude all three. Contact your insurer before agreeing to private treatment
US Embassy: the United States Embassy in Ankara.
Official tourism authority: Go Turkiye, the national tourism board. And with the Antalya provincial directorate of culture and tourism, which is the right body for a complaint about a hotel, an operator or a boat trip
The FCDO records 29 sexual assaults reported by British travellers to Turkey in 2025, the majority in coastal resort areas, often by someone met during the day, and a significant number by hotel or spa staff. Arrange a female spa therapist in advance and confirm on arrival.
Methanol poisoning kills visitors to Turkey. Buy spirits from licensed shops, and decline anything poured from an unlabelled bottle.

Rabies is present and stray dog packs can be aggressive. A bite needs medical attention immediately.
Solo women safety assessment: Alanya is socially easy and thoroughly international, with Turkish, Russian, German and English in daily use, a long-established resident foreign community, European dress on the beach and the strip, and a woman alone drawing no particular attention; away from the resort, in the old village, the bazaar and inland, covered shoulders and knees are the ordinary courtesy and a headscarf is needed in a mosque. ORDINARY CRIME IS LOW, with petty theft on the beaches and in the bazaar and persistent but non-threatening sales pressure, and the FCDO notes counterfeit banknotes in circulation so check cash change. THE WARNING THAT MATTERS MOST IS THE FCDO'S SEXUAL ASSAULT SECTION AND IT DESCRIBES THIS KIND OF PLACE DIRECTLY: of 4.27 million British travellers in 2025, 29 cases of sexual assault including rape were reported to consular staff, the majority during the tourist season IN COASTAL RESORT AREAS, often committed by someone the victim had met during the day, and A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER BY HOTEL OR SPA STAFF. METHANOL POISONING is the second published risk and kills people, so buy spirits only from licensed shops. THE SEA IS THE THIRD and the FCDO is blunt that people drown in Turkey every year, with strong undercurrents, hidden rocks and partial lifeguard cover here. Stray dogs carry a rabies risk and a bite needs immediate attention, and many insurance policies exclude the paragliding, quad biking and jeep safaris sold all along this strip. 183 is the Turkish social support line for violence against women.
