Your intuition has been talking to you the whole time.
Not sometimes. The whole time. Through every decision you were not sure about. Through every relationship that felt off before you could explain why. Through every moment you knew something before you had any logical reason to know it.
The problem is not that your intuition stopped. The problem is everything else got louder.
The notifications. The opinions. The podcast that tells you what successful people do in the morning. The friend who means well and gives advice from their own unhealed places. The algorithm that has learned exactly what keeps you scrolling. The news cycle that makes the world feel like it is on fire every single day because it is and because fear keeps people watching.
All of that noise sits on top of the quieter signal. And most people have been living in the noise for so long they have forgotten the signal was ever there.
This post is about finding it again.
What Intuition Actually Is
Before we talk about how to hear it we need to talk about what it actually is. Because most people have a wrong idea about intuition and that wrong idea is why they cannot find it.
Intuition is not a mystical force outside of you that descends when you are spiritually worthy enough to receive it. It is not a feeling that only certain gifted people have access to. It is not the same as wishful thinking or fear dressed up as wisdom.
Intuition is your nervous system processing more information than your conscious mind can handle and sending you the summary.
You have been alive for every day of your life. You have watched thousands of interactions. You have felt the difference between a room that is safe and a room that is not, between a person who means what they say and a person who does not, between a decision that aligns with who you are and one that does not. Your body and your unconscious mind have been taking notes the entire time.
Intuition is those notes surfacing. It is pattern recognition at a level deeper than conscious thought. It is your whole self knowing something before the part of you that uses words and logic has caught up.
That is why it feels different from regular thinking. Because it is different. It comes from a different place and it moves differently and it asks something different of you.
It asks you to trust yourself.
Why We Stop Hearing It
We are not taught to trust ourselves. We are taught to trust systems. Institutions. Credentials. Other people's frameworks for how life is supposed to work.
From the time we are very young we are trained to look outside for the answer. What does the teacher think. What do my parents want. What does society expect. What do my friends think I should do. What does the internet say.
That training is not entirely wrong. Other people know things we do not. Expertise is real. Community matters.
But the training goes too far. It teaches us to distrust our own inner signal so completely that we stop being able to hear it at all. We outsource our knowing. And then we wonder why we feel lost.
There is something else. The modern world is specifically designed to keep you in your head and out of your body. Your phone is designed to keep your attention on the screen. The news is designed to keep you anxious. Social media is designed to keep you comparing. Work culture is designed to keep you producing. All of it keeps you in reactive mode, responding to external input, never stopping long enough to notice what is coming from inside.
Intuition lives in the pauses. And we have engineered the pauses out of our lives.
The Difference Between Intuition and Fear
This is the question I get asked more than any other. How do I know if it is my intuition or just fear.
It is one of the most important questions you can learn to answer because fear and intuition can feel similar in the body and they point in completely opposite directions.
Here is what I have learned. Fear is loud and urgent. It narrows. It contracts. It says you have to decide right now and the stakes are everything and if you get this wrong everything falls apart. Fear is a pressure. It wants you to act immediately to make the feeling stop.
Intuition is quieter. It does not rush you. It does not threaten you. It is more like a knowing that sits underneath the noise rather than adding to it. It is patient in a way that fear never is. It can wait. It will still be there when you come back to it.
Fear says run. Intuition says look.
Fear is about survival. Intuition is about alignment.
And here is the test that I find most reliable. Sit with the feeling and ask: does this feel like wisdom or does it feel like wound. Because a lot of what we call intuition is actually an old wound talking. The part of us that got hurt before and does not want to get hurt again. That voice is real and it deserves compassion. But it is not intuition. It is protection. And protection and wisdom are not the same thing.
How to Actually Hear It
There is no shortcut here. Hearing your intuition requires creating the conditions in which it can be heard. That means doing things that most people in the modern world actively resist.
Silence. Not meditation necessarily, though that helps. Just silence. Time without input. Without a podcast or music or scrolling. Time where the only thing happening is you existing in a space without noise. For most people even five minutes of this feels unbearable at first. That discomfort is information. It tells you how long it has been since you sat with yourself.
Slowness. Intuition does not show up in a hurry. The decisions we regret most are usually the ones we made the fastest, under pressure, without giving ourselves time to feel what was actually true. Slowing down before a decision, sitting with it, sleeping on it, is not weakness or indecision. It is making space for the deeper signal to surface.
The body. Your intuition lives in your body more than your mind. The tightness in your chest when something is wrong. The ease in your shoulders when something is right. The way your stomach drops before you can explain why. These are not irrational responses to be overridden by logic. They are data. Learn to read them.
Journaling. Writing without an agenda. Not writing to figure something out. Writing to find out what you already know. There is something about putting words on a page without editing them that bypasses the part of your mind that manages your self image and lets something more honest come through. Do it in the morning before the day gets loud. Do it when you are confused. Do it and then read what you wrote and notice if anything surprises you.
Solitude in nature. There is something specific that happens when you remove yourself from human-made environments and put yourself in natural ones. The nervous system settles in a way it does not settle anywhere else. The signal gets cleaner. I have had more clarity on trails and at the edge of water than I have ever had in any office or therapy room. This is not an accident. It is biology. We are animals and we hear ourselves better when we are in the world we evolved in.
When You Hear It, Trust It
This is the hardest part. Not finding the signal. Trusting it once you find it.
Because the moment you hear something true about yourself or your life the mind immediately starts generating reasons why it cannot be right. Why the timing is wrong. Why other people will not understand. Why it is too risky or too late or too much to ask of yourself.
That is the mind doing what it was trained to do. Protecting the status quo. Managing the risk. Keeping you inside the boundaries of what is known and therefore safe.
Intuition does not care about any of that. It cares about what is true. And what is true is often inconvenient and often asks something of you that the managed version of yourself would prefer not to give.
Trusting your intuition is a practice. You build it slowly. You start with small things. You notice what it feels like when you follow it versus when you override it. You track the outcomes over time. And gradually you build a relationship with your own inner knowing that becomes one of the most reliable things in your life.
That relationship is what SoulMap is built to support. Not to tell you what your intuition is saying. To help you create the conditions in which you can hear it yourself.
If you are ready to start that conversation I am here.
